PRESS CONFERENCE TENTATIVELY PLANNED FOR 5:00 P.M. EDT

We’re told that Raiders Al Davis will meet with the media at 5:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday.  If, that is, Davis ultimately decides to meet with the media at all.
As we understand it a final decision (for now) on the fate of coach Lane Kiffin and his in-house replacement will be made on Tuesday morning local time.
Meanwhile, we’ve heard that it’s possible Monday’s meetings between Kiffin and three offensive assistants focused only on strategy and not on whether one of the three men with whom Davis spoke — Greg Knapp, Tom Cable, and Paul Hackett — would be best suited to take over for Kiffin.
But, frankly, that doesn’t mean much to us.  If Davis hasn’t decided whether to replace Kiffin with one of his three assistants, would Davis come right out and say that the meetings were intended to determine whether the men could replace Kiffin?  In our view, Davis would be more inclined to have a dialogue with the men, and to base his decision on the substance and the form of their answers to his questions about the running game or pass blocking or trying a 76-yard field goal.
Besides, if Davis were going to talk X’s and O’s in an effort to improve the team after a crushing loss to the Chargers, wouldn’t he also be interested in talking to coaches from the defensive side of the ball?  After all, it was the defense that yielded 25 points in the fourth quarter, not the offense.
While the only thing that’s clear about this one is that nothing is clear, things are happening that didn’t happen during past phases of the Lane Kiffin termination watch.

I hope he sets his alarm clock and picks up a coffee on the way to the office, considering he normally doesn’t get to the office until 7:30 EDT (4:30 PDT). He might be a little cranky.

Al is going to announce he’s taking over as head coach AND quarterback.

its very possible al davis was interviewing the assts to see if they stand behind kiffin as the players do. kiffin didnt lose the locker room as some coaches in the past did. if those asst’s stand behind kiffin then davis wont fire him. al thrives on causing division. it may very well be that kiffin wins this battle. if he doesnt then davis, the raiders and raider nation lose….

Has anyone considered that Al Davis instructed Ryan to make “bad” defensive calls and loose the game, so that Al could then fire Kiffin?

    Nice one B-rad–

    LONG LIVE AL!

Al Davis is going to come into work 2.5 hours early? It MUST be important.

  8. GFH says: Sep 30, 2008 9:14 AM

On behalf of Chiefs fans everywhere, may Al Davis live forever.

  9. Dupree says: Sep 30, 2008 9:25 AM

Isn’t it obvious, he’s trying to get Kiffin to quit still so he doesn’t have to axe him and not pay him.

Al is the crazy old uncle that everyone has in a family. No coach wants to work for him – that is the reason he has Kiffen in the first place, everyone else turned him down. The best thing for da Raidahs would be fore Al to step down. Until he does, the organization is doomed to failure.

Didn’t the Raiders Kick the Chiefs ASS?

I’m sorry did the defense convert only 3 of 11 third downs one by penalty and wasn’t defense out there for 24 minutes in the second half because of it? You’re an idiot Florio

On behalf of the Raider Nation, may King Carl and Herm get lifetime contracts. They’re doing a helluva job!

  13. evil says: Sep 30, 2008 10:03 AM

LMAO at the GFH and MTH77.
Hey Al….hopefully you aren’t thinking about Knapp,Cable or Hackett as interim HC. Go with James Lofton.

  14. joetoronto says: Sep 30, 2008 10:37 AM

    Right on, dunkingonuts.
The defense has been sagging late in games thanks to an offense that can’t convert 3rd downs and stay on the field.
Florio hasn’t actually watched the games though, he’s making comments based on stats and stats only.

    Just whine, Baby!!

Rob Ryan is likely the successor to Lane Kiffin. The meeting witht he offensive boys is probably to ensure they will become Ryan supporters or they will follow Kiffin out the door

  17. trikee says: Sep 30, 2008 10:57 AM

oh….so now he is not “expected to replace kiffin” so much anymore. florio, you’re doing your backtracking thing again. you post seemingly everyday that kiffin will be fired so you can be the first one in the media to say you broke the story. then, when you’re wrong, you post some lame a$$ excuse why it didn’t happen. too funny

  18. GFH says: Sep 30, 2008 11:05 AM

Yes the Raiders did beat the Chiefs, and yes King Carl and Herm suck badly. Yet Al Davis seems to have the ability to make the Raiders the biggest trainwreck in the NFL, maybe only second to Matt Millen.

  19. joetoronto says: Sep 30, 2008 11:41 AM

The Raiders actually have good young talent, GFH, and the Chiefs don’t.
    That’s a big difference, don’t you think?
    Jackass.

  20. dunkingonuts says: Sep 30, 2008 11:58 AM

    Question:
If they Raiders fire Kiffin and go on to win 7 or 8 games this year does Florio admit that Al made the right choice?

  21. evil says: Sep 30, 2008 12:52 PM

    joetoronto,
Dorsey,Flowers,Hali,Albert,Bowe are all young good talent (to name a few). I think the Chiefs have the potential to be a good team in the near future.
