MORE TROUBLE FOR L.J.

Typically, a great your player wants to get a long-term, big-money extension before injuries impair his ability to continue to perform at a high level. In the case of Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, he got paid before he became a turd. Of course, a strong argument could be made that Johnson already was a turd. If he was, it wasn’t enough to keep the Chiefs from giving him a big pile of money. It’s the kind of money that the Chiefs wouldn’t have given to him if they knew then what they know now. In addition to a pending assault charge involving allegations that he went Heisman Trophy on a woman at a night club earlier this year, Johnson has had a string of tardiness issues, and reportedly refused to come out of a game earlier in the year. But now there’s more. According to Michael Smith of ESPN.com, Johnson recently was involved in another physical altercation with a woman at a night club. The latest development came during the team’s recent bye week, and Johnson is expected to be suspended by the league. “It’s just a matter of for how long,” a source told Smith. The Chiefs have acknowledged the situation. “We are aware of the most recent incident involving Larry Johnson and we are very disappointed with his involvement,” Carl Peterson said in a statement on Sunday. “We will cooperate fully with the Kansas City authorities who are investigating the matter. We have also made the NFL office in New York aware of the incident and officials there are conducting their own independent investigation. Based upon the NFL Player Conduct Policy, we will have no further comment.” It’d be interesting to know whether the Chiefs knew about this most recent incident when they were shopping Johnson. If they did, and if they didn’t disclose it to potential suitors, their conduct would be even worse than that of the Lions, who were trying to trade Jon Kitna while he was injured.
