CONCUSSIONS AREN'T FOR PANSIES

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who recently lamented the NFL’s movement away from skull-crushing and/or spine-snapping hits, has suffered yet another concussion, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Polamalu, who suggested that the league’s emphasis on safety is more about money than player health, said that without the big hits football becomes a “pansy game.”
Polamalu has had at least six concussions during his football career.
This time around, he was “dinged” after his helmet flew out while he was tackling Cedric Benson of the Bengals.
The Post-Gazette also reports that cornerback Bryant McFadden will miss five games with a broken forearm.

It’s not karma. He talks the talk and walks the walk. He realizes the risks involved in playing tackle football.

you’re 1000% correct, freedomispopular. troy does walk the walk. he lays his body on the line with every play. he may not have a 10-12 year career, but boy is he fun to watch now. and i love having him on the steelers. what a great guy.

    Polamalu is a decent player.

So Florio is going to bust on Troy because he plays the game hard? What if he was on a different team, would you like him Florio? Your hatred for anything Steelers is so blatently obvious. Is this somehow associated with the ownership situation? I’m sure you could have figured something out to throw in there at the end, you’re a witty guy.
By the way folks this isn’t karma. When you play the game as hard as Troy does on EVERY SINGLE PLAY injuries will happen, that’s the NFL. I don’t know anyone (other than Florio) that wouldn’t want him or a player of his ability and heart on their team, it’s as simple as that.

Bravo – Bravo – south-fl-steel!! When we are given the privilege to witness Troy Polamalu play true smash-mouth football in every sense of the word, I know undoubtedly that I am watching a future HOF!!! Most can only dream of being as dedicated and talented as #43!

Concussions could probably be avoided with two simple changes to the rules. First, require all players to use anti-concussion helmets. They are remarkably effective, they just don’t look cool. Second, enforce rules about buckling your chin strap. They are designed to keep the helmet on your noggin where it does the most good. If the league did those two things then players could continue pounding the [poo] out of each other and still remember their middle names.

Yeah! We love troy and would have no problem with his career ending too soon due to a 10th concussion! We’ll just draft another one! Duh, we don’t need to worry about one of the best players in the league we’ll just draft another one! Game changing safeties like him and sanders are a dime a dozen, right?we’ll just get another one! Duh it’s that easy isn’t it?

Defensive (and Hines Ward) helmets should be old school leather, so they realize it is intended to be for protection and not a weapon.

  14. kosarsmyidol says: Oct 21, 2008 12:02 AM

Well, Polamalu’s comments were off-target. Players are bound to get hurt. That is inevitable in all sports, even the ones that involve minimal contact (or none at all). The NFL should try to minimize the injuries that it can, however. Ben has a point regarding the anti-concussion helmets and chin-straps. It’s a game. I don’t want to watch a player get his face rearranged by a helmet to helmet hit like Boldin, or paralyzed like Utley or Stingley. While the owners are protecting their investments, as Polamalu pointed out, that doesn’t mean that fining players for unnecessarily dangerous hits isn’t an appropriate way to protect the players.
What worries me more is the abuse that quarterbacks like Big Ben take. Kosar took a lot of sacks in his career (273 in 13 seasons), and has lasting neurological problems as a result. In 4.5 seasons, Ben has already been sacked 161 times! I hope that the Steelers get an O-line for his sake. I’m a Browns fan too, but it makes me sick that the owners don’t seem to care about his well-being in that regard.

troy was right the nfl is turning into pansey ball. i mean you didn’t hear stuart scott crying when he ran that button hook for the jets and got his eye knocked out by the football throwing machine.

  16. gone gator says: Oct 21, 2008 1:48 AM

Didn’t I read right here last night that Hines Ward hit was ‘clean and no penalty called’? Must’ve been that you-tube video clearly showing ‘Mr. Happy’ leading with his head! Clearly an intentional cheap shot.

  17. Warrior Monk says: Oct 21, 2008 4:27 AM

    @ Florio
Polamalu was referring to the fines levied on Hines Ward the last couple weeks, which, clearly were neither, “skull-crushing nor spine-snapping.”
    @ Ben Roethlisbunger
Amen brother! I have been screaming for years that there is no way that helmets should fly off with the ease & frequency they do in the current NFL. If Goodell really cared about head injuries, he would force players to wear helmets that fit properly & buckle them up right.
If anything, Polamalu should be fined & suspended for dropping his head on the play in question. That was exactly the type of action that led to Utley’s spinal injury (in fact, every spinal injury I have ever witnessed). But I would never try to tame Polamalu’s style of play. If you are going to do that, you might as well just banish him from the league.

  18. Kevin from Philly says: Oct 21, 2008 8:42 AM

If he thinks the NFL is such a pansy league, why is he wearing a helmet? C’mon tough guy, that hair is enough protection!

  19. CT Stiller says: Oct 21, 2008 10:20 AM

I wish posters like gone gator knew about football. It would make the conversations that much better. Instead we have an ignorant “fan” making pointless and incorrect allegations. What a dummy.

What about mouthguards??? They need to regulate/research/require better mouthguards!!!

  21. Thunderlipps says: Oct 21, 2008 1:40 PM

    I love the irony!
Troy will look great in a big ole’ gary busey helmet…

  22. moonbeam says: Oct 21, 2008 4:49 PM

let’s wait until troy is out of the game for ten years,
he’ll be drooling all over his shirt in an aftercare facility.
