CULPEPPER UNLIKELY TO GO TO KANSAS CITY

The Kansas City Star reports that the Chiefs and retired quarteback Daunte Culpepper probably won’t get past the discussions phase. The newspaper did not have an update on whether former Buc Bruce Gradkowski could be headed to Kansas City after the Chiefs observed him working out Monday. The situation in Kansas City is such a mess that Gradkowski, who wasn’t awful in 11 starts for Tampa Bay in 2006, might be a significant upgrade at the position. The Chiefs’ options at this point are banged-up veteran Damon Huard (who is mediocre at best when healthy), second-year guy Tyler Thigpen (best known for this disturbing picture posted on Deadspin) and some guy named Ingle Martin. As pointed out earlier today, it doesn’t make much sense for Culpepper to come out of retirement to get the snot knocked out of him for a squad that probably isn’t much better than his son’s undefeated pee wee team. The Chiefs’ best solution at the position is probably taking their lumps with the cast of spares on the roster and grabbing a QB with their top-three pick in April.
