There is plenty of skepticism in league circles regarding the potential effectiveness of 49ers coach Mike Singletary's decision to use his first postgame press conference to berate unnamed members of his team.
As one league insider observed, "I just don't think coming out that strong was the right approach. Especially with a team as untalented as the Niners are. The minute he says the wrong thing or does the wrong thing, he's lost the locker room."
Based on reports that surfaced recently in Arizona, there's another "thing" Singletary supposedly did on Sunday that some players might deem to be just plain "wrong."
Per Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic and Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910, Singletary's halftime speech to the team included the fledgling head coach dropping his pants, showing the players his bare ass, and pointing to it, apparently as a visual aid to display Singletary's belief that the team was getting its ass kicked. (Hey, it beats the hell out of studying film.)
According to the reports, Singletary then addressed the team for three or four minutes with his pants around his ankles.
Frankly, we're not quite sure what to make of it. The locker room is a universe unto itself. It's a place where motivation might flow from a tree stump and a sharp ax. Or a dead turkey in a locker. Or a banana in the tailpipe.
Still, if Singetary is doing this kind of stuff during the first game of his career, he'll soon be pulling a Bob Knight with a fistful of two-ply Charmin. And then it's only a matter of time before Singletary is crapping in a grocery bag.
Dude...I really, really hope this is just a rumor.
During that press conference he reminded me of when I played little league football, and the head coach was absent from practice...The assistants always went overboard.
I played in college and I would play for this guy if he were naked. Florio - you are an attorney and most likely never were a part of a team. This guy is a leader.
Nice work on the "Banana in a tailpipe" --------CLASSIC
I'm sure that was a scene in one of the Airplane movies, but if it wasn't, it should have been. I wonder though, if any of the players thought Singletary was talking out his ass?
If you mean league circles as in the media, then sure.
Every former player I've seen interviewed about it on NFL Network lauds Mike Singletary's fire... if anything there's been doubt expressed on inferring Vernon Davis was a 'cancer'... but you need to double-check you still got a pair if you don't listen to him and want to just get off the couch and kick someone's teeth in.
HAHA ... thats just funny.
I do not know if doing something unconventional is bad. Look at Ozzie Guillen in that crappy watching sport baseball. He seems to be cooky and gets the most from his players.
I doubt Landry would do something like that, but jimmy Johnson would have.
So fake.
"can't win with 'em. can't wipe with 'em. can't do it"
Oh man. I knew this Singletary experiment was going to be a failure, but I had no idea it was going to be this soon or this hilarious.
I can only imagine the visual aid he'll use when he tells the team to use their brains!
hell they all walk around nekkid in the locker room.
might have been daring them to laugh.
at least he didnt pull (literally) a haley.
Hey Phil, I want to be traded to the 49'ers.
Brady Quinn
Singletary addressed the team with his pants around his ankles???He's lucky Charles Haley didn't make a cameo appearance in the locker-room. ROFL
Mike Singletary is a danger to the NFL. His intensity might make players actually want to do some hitting. We can't have any of that.
It makes sense.....the whole team has been playing bent over with their pants down all season. Singletary probably just wanted to relate to his team.
Well I think Mike Singletary was just trying to get his players
attention. I pulled down my pants when I was three years old to
get my Mothers attention. I had much to learn at three...so does
the new coach of the San Francisco 49ers. I suspect Singletary
will mature into his job. I'm sure by his third game Mike will
learn to express himself in a more articulate manner...but I
wonder what he will do in the second game as head coach of the
49ers?
Everyone seems so impressed by this dude. Why? He was a great player, but relatively no coaching experience. There is also absolutely no reason to expect him to be a great coach. We have almost no data and some over reactive speech after his first game has made him Lombardi.
I can't wait to see this play out with the 90% probability it has, he will not be a successfull NFL coach. He won't even keep this job after December 08.
I have a tough time believing he did that...Even so, my opinion on him wouldn't change. I think he's going to be a great coach and if the 49ers don't retain him, they should just sell the franchise.
Train wreck, thy name is Samurai Mike.
I agree with JSpicoli. It takes more than fire or passion to be a great coach. Besides the more he rants the more the players will tune him out. You have to be firm with these players but once you start treating them like kids you'll lose your effectiveness.
Sadly I believe this guy will fail. His temper tantrum will be a common occurrence, after every loss... and the team will start to suck even more. You can't be too much of a dick when dealing with other grown men.
The 9ers play in San Fran... nuff said
i wonder who this supposed "nfl insider" is? is he from the clowns,er browns organization? the bengals? how do we know he is not from some other pathetic organization which would mean his opinion is meaningless. let the guy run the team and see what happens. if it backfires, ok, point made, but what if they start winning? who cares what any 'nfl insider' says? if he has something to say, come out and say it and stop acting like a little school girl whispering when the teacher isn't looking. what a joke, the guy has coached one game and already "insiders" are dogging him.
Singletary reminds me of Ray Rhodes. That's not gonna be good for anybody.
So... specifically he meant that his team had "colon cancers."
this is a load of crap. who exactly is the league insider? whomever he is, tell him he should have been in the room when it happened and looked between singletary's leg at his balls, and then checked between his own legs to make sure his is still there. cowards always reporting something but doing it secretively
Jeff Garcia has said that he would like to retire as a 49er and that it has been his dream to work with a coach like Singletary.

Are you really Jeff Garcia. He heard about the "bare ass" and want to come back to SF.
Is former 49er Charles Haily is the new linbackers coach?
now if he had shot ping pong balls out of his ass I would have been impressed
It all makes sense now...Singletary pulled his pants down at halftime, and there was a Bill Walsh montage on his buttcheeks this is why Danielle Sargeant had Walsh on the brain
Great stuff. There's gotta be a new nickname to arise from this. Maybe Mike "Dark side of the Moon" Singletary.
MAYBE HE TOLD MARTZ TO TURN THE OTHER CHEEK!
Well, it is San Francisco, after all. Next week, he'll wear some of those Prince-inspired coaches' pants with the ass cheeks cut out.
Oh, and a nice matching leather vest.
49'ers went from Walsh and Siefert to THIS???
Glad they're in my division.
Wait til next game when he pulls a mike ditka crotch grab while his pants are down.

Would you only play for him if he were naked? Or would you simply over look whether he is clothed or not, or......? Not that there is anything wrong with that
I prefer my coach be clothed, but it is San Francisco
Coulda taken a dump after dropping his pants and called it a "Martz"...
Do you have a breath mint? ...Perhaps some Binaca?
I guess the players should be happy Samurai Mike didn't want to show them they were playing like stiffs.
