RAIDERS OFFERED HALL A CHANCE TO STAY

A league source tells us that the Oakland Raiders offered to keep cornerback DeAngelo Hall for the rest of the 2008 season.
But to stay Hall would have had to sacrifice the injury guarantee applicable to his $9 million option bonus due in March 2009 and his guaranteed base salary of $7.5 million for 2009.
Hall declined.
Teams have until Thursday to make waiver claims for Hall.  The more likely outcome is that Hall won’t be claimed, and that he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
There is increasing speculation that the Patriots could be interested in adding Hall, under a minimum-salary deal for the balance of the season.  The thinking in some circles is that the Pats would rely upon their veteran leadership in the locker room to influence Hall to be something other than a turd.
And if he steps out of line even once, the Pats would undoubtedly cut him loose.
Finally, several readers have asked us to explain the concept of injury and skill guarantees.  OK, we’ll do it.  (Insert eye roll here.)
An injury guarantee ensures payment in the event a player is (duh) injured.  A skill guarantee means that the player gets the money even if, as in Hall’s case, he is cut.
The reality in Hall’s case is that the reports of “guaranteed” money in the amount of $24 million omitted the fact that $16.5 million of it was guaranteed for injury only.

    They couldn’t have offered him to stay by reworking his contract.
    He can only sign one contract with a team in one calendar year.

  3. shukey11 says: Nov 5, 2008 10:24 PM

    is that an on field injury or anytime injury cuz if that was the case he could have hird some thug to mess up his knee and take the 16 mill

    @kurtwarnerfumbledagain . . . .
    I don’t think waiving an injury guarantee equates to reworking a contract. And I’d have to research this, but I think the rule is that there can be only one renegotiation of a contract each year. But I could be wrong.

    Hall is the most overrated player in NFL history. All hype no gameplay. After hinds ward beat him for 90 yards with one shoe, he should have retired

    I saw from Stats LLC that he gave up more yards than any defender this year, and the third most catches. Good riddance. Asamougha is mad about it. I would be mad too if my counterpart’s ineptitude meant that I could get a huge salary by not working (something sick like only 4 passes thrown at him all year). 1 down Al, about 45 more, plus yourself, to go before I decide to watch football again!

    na a na na, hey hey, goodbye, and good riddins!

  8. hesawinner says: Nov 5, 2008 10:43 PM

    Well Rai-Duh fans, consider this; If the genius Al decides to “clean house” they’ll finish below Herm and the Chiefs. What respectable head coach candidate would consider taking a job with a team that finished below the team that tried the least to finish anything less than last? The Rai-Duhs might be the only thing that can save a clueless King Carl.

    hesawinner……you have a clueless COMBO…..Herm AND Carl…your place in the cellar is safe for quite a while….Long live Cruddy Broyle…

    Wingnut: You crack me up. And it cracks me up even more that the Patriots continue to make your Raiders look like idiots. From the tuck rule to the Randy Moss trade.

    What about the multiple times Steve Smith made him implode, can’t forget those :-)

    Florio, would Hall be adding the cheap shot from Harrison or the cheap shot by Wilfork to his repertwa with that sweet veteran leadership?

    How is injury defined? Missing a game because of injury? Or something bigger like IR? How would it apply to the off-season?

    So the “skill” guarantee is a reference to how good one’s agent is in locking your money down even if you suck?

  16. malpine says: Nov 6, 2008 12:40 AM

    When the earlier pulled-out-of-his-ass presumption on Florio’s part was that Jerry Jones would be interested in Hall, Jone’s is continuing to buy a SuperBowl. But when Patriots supposedly show real interest, it’s made to sound like such a great idea.
    The same move by two different teams, but somehow it’s different.

  17. wingnut says: Nov 6, 2008 12:57 AM

    @josereyeso,whats the tuck rule?

  18. r8rfan-Al_h8r says: Nov 6, 2008 1:52 AM

    Josereyes, keep this in mind: The Raiders play NE later this season, so it wouldn’t be beyond comprehension that DeAngelo gets a pick-six off of Russell. My sister could cover the Raiders receivers, so as a lifelong Raiders fan, I know how these things go. So with the things you’ve mentioned, now possibly Hall showing us up, the only one left to start performing is LaMont Jordan, and we’ve got the clean sweep!

    that the Sea Turtle pushed off.

    wingnut jealousy is such a wasted emotion..you did hit the nail on your head with your name..Get used to the Raiders sucking because that is exactly what they will do until Davis dies..with 3 superbowls in 4 years I was going broke buying championship shirts and hats..

  23. kellyb9 says: Nov 6, 2008 10:04 AM

    Hall is going to turn into the next Ty Law, and Al Davis will complain about tampering. I can already see it happening.

    @kellyb9,you bumped your head!
    Hows Lamont Jordan?(sniker)

  25. boron says: Nov 6, 2008 10:56 AM

    Al Davis may reconsider his loyal buddy ART SHELL as HC. He can repeat the refrain, “I made a mistake dismissing him [the first time and the second time],” After all, AL Davis is loyal to the ghost of past successes [as a lineman]. And Art will return his loyalty by pledging to go whatever Al orders him to do…He won’t be a troublemaker in Al’s house.
    Just whine, Al !!

  26. YaNeS says: Nov 6, 2008 1:58 PM

    Honestly just speaking as a football fan, I would love for DeAngelo Hall to sign with Miami! The Dolphins play Oakland next week and it would make for a great storyline! ESPN would have a field day with this one.

  27. YaNeS says: Nov 6, 2008 2:07 PM

    Oh! And sorry to break it to all you Patriots fans but theirs no chance Hall signs with New England. Bellichik already ruled it out. Plus, they just signed Nate Webster to the last available spot on the team. Bellichik said he’s comfortable with what they have… Likely options for DeAngelo are the Dolphins, Cowboys, Colts, and Saints…

  28. TexasPatFan says: Nov 6, 2008 2:43 PM

    YaNeS -
    1st – Belichick has not ruled anything out…not publically atleast. Why would he do that? Do you speak with him privately?
    2nd – There is no such thing as “last available spot.” They put Shawn Crable on IR to clear a space for Webster. You can always find a spot if you need one.
    3rd – It’s Jason Webster not Nate Webster

    hey PantherFan thats FN hilarious. Coming straight from the team that was ROIDED out at the super bowl and lost to the Pat’s. yeah we can really buy your comments as accurate and unbiased. Come on – everyone knows it but you I guess.

    We can’t judge Hall’s play by his time in Oakland. Remember this?: “Randy Moss has lost a step”.
