STEELERS' SMITH NOT DONE MAKING GUARANTEES

Steelers safety Anthony Smith was embarrassed last season when he guaranteed victory over the Patriots and things didn’t quite work out that way.
But as the Steelers prepare to play the Patriots on Sunday, Smith is not done making guarantees.
If they ask me again, I’ll say the same thing,” Smith told the Indiana Gazette, per Adam Schefter of NFL Network. “We’re the No. 1 defense. If we play like we’ve been playing, and our offense comes around and has a good game, and we’re clicking on all cylinders, we’re going to win the game.”
Of course, a declaration of victory over the Patriots this year isn’t as meaningful as it was last year, when New England was undefeated. And it’s especially less meaningful coming from Smith, who was a starter last year but no longer gets significant playing time.

And even less meaningful in that it came from the Indiana Gazette, of Indiana, PA, the only paper that would interview Smith.
Where will he make the guarantee next year, the Latrobe Penny Saver?

I somewhat agree with Smith. You should always think you’re going to win and be confident in that assumption.
HOWEVER, he is playing as much on that defense as I am. He uses the term “we” when he talks about the defense very liberally. He should quit writing checks that his other team mates are going to have to cash and focus on improving his pathetic game.

    This guy can’t be serious.
    Where is Tomlin?
Why would you give someone like Belichick bulletin board material like this?
    Idiot 101.
Maybe he called Joey Porter for some media advice.

  4. Mistress Rachael says: Nov 25, 2008 12:48 PM

OMG..Anthony, take another hit off your crack pipe.
I’m amazed that the guys who chirp in this league are non performers. He has to be Peezy Porters lover or girlfriend.
Pitts/NE games are fun to watch..but have lost a little luster since Cowher left.
Has Tomlin ever heard of a ball-gag???…Oops, forgot, he’s the genius who called an end around on 4th & goal last year.

  5. SkiFree says: Nov 25, 2008 12:53 PM

He basically said “if we play extremely well on both sides of the ball, then we’ll win”. I would hope so.

  6. mrmagoo says: Nov 25, 2008 12:53 PM

Joey Porter is Anthony’s voice coach. The only time I see him do anything on the field it’s wrong. Thankfully this year the only thing the Patriots can scheme against him is to hide the water cooler.

  7. CD_Ridge says: Nov 25, 2008 12:55 PM

Oh geez, not his again. Anthony Smith needs to learn to shut his pie hole. The Steelers were flying nicely under the radar, then Smith starts chirping. What an idiot.

  8. kate773 says: Nov 25, 2008 12:55 PM

Somehow I doubt this idiot would be talking this way if Brady was still playing.

  9. sureban says: Nov 25, 2008 1:04 PM

Anthony Smith uses “if” a few too many times to be making guarantees.

  10. Joe in Raleigh says: Nov 25, 2008 1:09 PM

“If our defense does this… and our offense does that… and we all play spectacularly, then we’ll win” — that isn’t a guarantee. A guarantee has to come without conditions.
“We want the ball and we’re gonna score” — now that’s a guarantee in all it’s glorious buffoonery.

  11. Mistress Rachael says: Nov 25, 2008 1:10 PM

Anthony…back for more punishement???? Sweetie, anyone ever tell you that crack kills.???
Goodness, this guy makes Porter look @ least special needs instead of retarded.

    Who?

  13. 7Steeler86 says: Nov 25, 2008 1:17 PM

I think he did, and still would say it if Brady were still playing. The Pats
aren’t the same team as last year and even if they were the refs don’t
seem to be handing them the game in crucial situations this year. LIKE THEY DID LAST YEAR! Didn’t we all witness Goodell look almost un-
prepared to hand the Giants the trophy in the Super bowl? Brady can’t
handle pressure and drops like a coward when someone gets to close.
So if he were still there what makes you think he could handle the kind
of pressure the Steelers have been bringing this year, Kate?

In the words of Rodney Harrison prior to playing the Eagles in the Super Bowl, who is Freddie Mitchell? But in this case, who is Anthony Smith?
Kate773, I dont think it would matter, this dope would probably say the same thing regardless of who the opposing QB was

  15. PFTiswhatitis says: Nov 25, 2008 1:25 PM

    Steelers will lose…again.

  16. FinfanJim says: Nov 25, 2008 1:26 PM

I know Schefter had this on NFLNetwork, but he actually learned of it on his weekly spot with WEEI. Dennis and Callahan actually pointed it out to him and Schefter was dumbfounded that this idiot would be chirping again.

  17. 2mdPittFan says: Nov 25, 2008 1:29 PM

    Wow,
The messages are blowing this out of proportion than the media blew the last one out.
    Way to go guys!
    Keep up the hard work.

  18. Mike D says: Nov 25, 2008 1:32 PM

As a Steeler fan, I can tell you that if im driving down the street and happen to see Anythony Smith step off the curb, im going to do my damndest to run the guy over. His dumbass hardly ever sees the field (thank God) and he goes and says something like this? To quote Buddy Ryan “id trade him for a six-pack. and it wouldnt even have to be cold”.

  19. Pea Tear Griffin says: Nov 25, 2008 1:46 PM

    “We’re the # 1 defense…”
No, the Steelers have the # 1 defense. You’re a special teamer!

  20. mborz says: Nov 25, 2008 1:49 PM

    [PFTiswhatitis said :Steelers will lose…again.]
Ironic that on a story about a guarantee from an idiot who will likely have little to do with the outcome of the game, another idiot that will have even less to do with the outcome steps up with his own guarantee.

  21. Mistress Rachael says: Nov 25, 2008 2:34 PM

Mike D…that was good. Where do you guys find players like Smith & Porter, & Buress???
Combined IQ of a bag of rocks.

  22. PatriotReign says: Nov 25, 2008 2:52 PM

    7Steeler86,
Really??? The league conspired to help the pats??? Brady is a coward?? Really??? Grow up.

  23. kellyb9 says: Nov 25, 2008 3:13 PM

Anthony Smith probably isn’t the smartest person on the Steelers, but I didn’t necessarily see anything particularly inflammatory about what he said (I’m a Pats fan too). He basically said if they execute well in all facets of the game, they’ll win. Last year he said something along the lines of “we’re going to win”.

  24. JZuluaga1 says: Nov 25, 2008 3:37 PM

Aw man, we don’t get to see him get beat 3 times by Randy Moss & Co. again. Maybe Ellis Hobbs will run one back for a touchdown on him. Is he even in the kickoff coverage unit?

  25. DC Guy says: Nov 25, 2008 4:19 PM

Smith, shut your cake-hole! What an embarrassment to the Steelers. You have to be a premier player in the league to talk that kind of smack. He’s not.

  26. Brad says: Nov 25, 2008 4:25 PM

since hes on the bench its too bad the pats cant burn him again like they did last year

  27. The-Olive-Garden says: Nov 25, 2008 9:20 PM

If your asked if your going to beat a team. And you don’t guarantee it I don’t think you should be playing that sport.

  28. Non-Euclidean says: Nov 26, 2008 10:27 AM

Wow, comprehension of the spoken word doesn’t exist anymore.
It was never a guarantee last year, and what you just read wasn’t a guarantee this year. To find a lawyer labelling it a guarantee really speaks to the level of education in this country.
