McDANIELS WANTS McDERMOTT

One of the burning questions for Broncos fans in the wake of the news that Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will replace Mike Shanahan as head coach is this:  “Hey, we thought it was our defense that sucked?”
Though owner Pat Bowlen opted not to hire a defensive-minded coach to beef up a unit that has underachieved for years, McDaniels plans to address that side of the ball by pursuing Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott as the team’s next defensive coordinator.
McDermott’s name surfaced recently as a surprise candidate for the vacant defensive coordinator position in Green Bay.
But Mort points out that McDermott remains under contract for another year, which means that the Eagles can block him from leaving for anything other than a head-coaching job.
Moreover, the fact that the Eagles are still playing games makes McDermott completely off limits, possibly through February 1.

just because a coach worked on one side of the ball doesn’t mean he can “fix” that side of the ball.

it could be worse, your qb could choke in the clutch, your best defensive player could be one dimensional, half your team could be ex-convicts, your coach could be a babbling idiot, your best receivers ego could be bigger than his biceps, and your teams having an orgy in the shower after getting whooped, so thank your lucky charms your not a dallas fan

Jesus Christ, this is why I hate Wisconsin sports. Give a guy the opportunity to go to A) Little 100,000 population 99% caucasian nothing to do small town with an Applebees Green Bay… or B) Denver. He’ll pick Denver 10 times out of 10.
And to think, at one point, our coaching staff consisted of Holmgren, Mariucci, Gruden, Reid, Rhodes & Jauron. That will NEVER happen again, EVER.
Sorry Aaron, you’re the 60 million dollar man that will never win a playoff game.

The Denver Post is saying that Dom Capers is going to be the Defensive coordinator http://www.denverpost.com/sportsheadlines/ci_11430967?source=rss
“A source also said the team will hire Dom Capers, who was the head coach of expansion teams Carolina and then Houston. He was an assistant/secondary coach with the Patriots this season after serving eight years as an NFL head coach. ”
Not sure who is right on this one. But maybe they don’t want to wait until February.

Apparently McDaniels isn’t retarded. I knew it was only a matter of time before Sean would get noticed.
Sean McDermott is more or less a clone of Spagnuolo. He’s worked under Jim Johnson for a while now, and after Spagnuolo (who was assumed to be the successor to Johnson) left for the Giants, and John Harbaugh (who was the secondary coach) left for Baltimore, McDermott was moved up to the secondary coach position and was being groomed to be the next D Coordinator after Jim Johnson. I was hoping nobody would notice him, but at the same time I’m happy for him. He’s gonna be a great coach…I was just hoping it would be here.
The Eagles don’t usually block their guys from taking higher positions. In fact, when Harbaugh left, Andy said straight up that he could take certain guys with him if he wanted. I’m pretty sure if McDaniels asks to interview McDermott, Andy will allow it without question. If McDaniels is smart, he’ll hire him. Jim Johnson’s defense works, and his understudies know how to run it almost as well as he does.

    Why is this Suprising?
    Ron Riviera
    Steve Spagnuolo
    Leslie Frazier
You can make a small arguement for JOhn Harbaugh who was the secondary coach in 2007 before taking the HC job in Baltimore!!!
McDermott is a disciple of Jim Johnson, who has quietly grown his own coaching tree in th NFL.

Why do I see him calling Romeo Crennel REAL soon?

  16. greggyd717 says: Jan 12, 2009 1:46 AM

For a team that needed lots of help on defense, they would have been smarter to bring in a defensive focused mind. I think that the Broncos have good pieces in Cutler and Marshall, but those two are no match for the weapons that McDaniels had in Brady and Moss let alone with Welker, Maroney, and Faulk added into that formula. I still think that McDaniels success was a product of having those outstanding players laid out in front of him. Things will come much harder in Denver.

Schefter reports that the man is Mike Nolan.
However, the Rocky Mountain News reports that two Bronco players said it is Capers.
In my opinion, Denver players of 2008 don’t really know whats going on-field then why should they know whats up off the field?
We all know that 99.9% of the time Adam Schefter is right 100% of the time.

  18. doggz109 says: Jan 12, 2009 2:48 AM

Latest I’ve heard is Nolan going to Denver.

  19. sasquatch77 says: Jan 12, 2009 3:23 AM

Word out of Broncoland tonight seems to be split between Dom Capers & Mike Nolan. Either way, we’re looking at a probable switch to the
3-4 and a very long rebuilding project on D.

  20. GigantoGillicus says: Jan 12, 2009 8:50 AM

Broncos did a nice little rope-a-dope here. Fans in the know fell for it hook line and sinker.

  21. evil says: Jan 12, 2009 9:16 AM

    Sasquatch:
Both Capers and Nolan have experience running 4-3 D’s so I wouldn’t assume their would be a switch to a 3-4 D in Denver in the near future, they may stick to a 4-3 seeing as that it was the personnel best dictates.
