IS EDWARDS EMMITT'S REPLACEMENT?

ESPN has announced that former Jets and Chiefs coach Herm Edwards will join the network in mid-February 2009.
He’ll serve as an NFL studio analyst.
“Edwards will appear on NFL Live, SportsCenter, ESPNEWS and other programs throughout the year in addition to contributing analysis on ESPN Radio and other platforms,” ESPN said in a release.
So amid rumblings that Emmitt Smith’s contract expires after the Super Bowl and that he won’t return to the network thereafter, the obvious question from our perspective is whether Edwards will be Emmitt’s replacement.
And that’s all we’ll say about it for now, because there’s a chance that we’ll run into Emmitt down here at some point over the next few days, and one of my goals for the week is to return to PFT Headquarters with the same number of teeth that I had when I left.

    That actually works for me.
He does seem to be good at the soundbite.
Replace Carter with Billick while you’re at it or with Dennis Green.
    Carter is boring.

Did Mike mispell Edwards’ name in the headline on purpose?

  4. HarrisonHits says: Jan 29, 2009 12:27 PM

Oh c’mon now Mike, Emmit may not be very coherent but he has never seemed to be an angry sort of person. I bet he’d just smack you around lightly without doing any permanent damage.

Nothing like some key analysis from a guy who can lose 12 in a row.

On Deadspin, it was reported that ESPN is having financial trouble….makes sense to hire ANOTHER person for their endless hours of coverage

is ESPN in complience with the Rooney Rule here?

  9. inmymind says: Jan 29, 2009 12:35 PM

Mike – are you trying to say that Emmitt would not be able to verbally discuss his dislike for you? That as an ex-athlete he would automatically resort to violence as his way of solving an issue?

    Carter’s eyebrows make me uncomfortable…

As a Cowboys fan (no one can really identify me, right?), let me be the first to lead a cheer of “Hip! Hip! Hooray!”
Wait, I’m not some old geezer from the 40′s (or a current or past Redskin coach).
Ahem, take two: “For real? That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout!”

Maybe if they put five really good former offensive linemen analysts in front of Emmitt to open up the discussion, he can appear to be a better television personality than he really is…it worked in Big D.

  31. PDXNinerfan says: Jan 29, 2009 1:47 PM

Why is every fired or retired player/coach automatically brought into television? Can’t they have a capped number of people they hire and it becomes sort of a prestige club? I guess the talent would then be more even across the networks, so one goal may be to hoard good people, but this is pointless and getting ridiculous.
I hate TV ratings. Overloading the airwaves with “talent” to establish revenue from advertisers that spend millions of dollars promoting crap I never buy.

  32. Swillhog says: Jan 29, 2009 1:48 PM

You should have like a 3 hour long conversation with him and tape record it so you’ll have new emmittisms to use throughout the year for us readers.

  38. BBrophy1 says: Jan 29, 2009 2:20 PM

yea because if you start being nice to Emmitt now all your past discretions are debacled and all is forgiven

  39. big_pat11 says: Jan 29, 2009 2:27 PM

Yes. I couldn’t stomach Emmitt on ESPN. I think he has the Ron Harper disease-Can’t speak worth a damn. Did he get in on name alone? I mean damn, even retired players should be able to talk with sense on TV. I mean damn.

  51. scorpion53061 says: Jan 29, 2009 7:03 PM

Florio has probably had one too many. That is why he misspelled the headline. But thats ok. Give em hell.

Why shut up now? After the 3,500 items you have put out over the past couple of years utterly throwing the guy under the bus – I don’t think one more would matter. If he wanted to clock you – he already has more than enough provocation to do it.
I hear Chris Landry is in Tampa, too!

  53. jackstraw777 says: Jan 29, 2009 9:49 PM

What an upgrade. A man who can actually put a sentence together and has full understanding of the English language. Great move by ESPN. It had to be painful for someone as articulate as Steve Young to be working with Emmitt Smith. I’m sure Steve has great respect for Emmitt the player but had to realize that talking on TV wasn’t his strong suit. Being a HOF doesn’t equate to holding down a job in sports broadcasting. Joe Montana was one of the best who ever lived. He failed on TV. Does Herm Edwards lack of success as coach take away his credibility as a broadcaster. Absolutely not. It’s why people should get off Matt Millen’s case. His failure as a GM doesn’t take away his ability to analyze the game. He was great before he took the Lions job.

  54. vtopa says: Jan 30, 2009 11:26 AM

Emmitt the mongoloid moron. Got Deuce McAllister mixed up with Duce Staley on Monday Night Football. The guy is a total retard…hit in the head too many times. Keep the microphones and your dictionary away from this guy.

  55. NightTrainWooWoo says: Jan 30, 2009 12:17 PM

Wait a minute…you’re from West Virgina and you are worried about your teeth, Florio? If you have a few you are already doing well.
