REEVES TO TALK ABOUT HIS DALLAS DEPARTURE

Former Broncos, Giants, and Falcons coach Dan Reeves has spoken to the Dallas Morning News and ESPN.com regarding the reasons for his short stint with the Cowboys.
At 4:10 p.m. EST, Reeves will talk about the situation on 680 The Fan in Atlanta, during Buck & Kincade.
It’s our understanding that Reeves will tell the whole story, including details about the issue over which the deal collapsed.
Per Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder of ESPN.com, the problem first arose when Reeves balked at becoming a member of Wade Phillips’ coaching staff, and when owner Jerry Jones apparently resisted giving Reeves an executive title with broader authority.
“I thought the thing was done, and we finally agreed on what the title was going to be,” Reeves told ESPN.com.  “I didn’t want to have a coaching title and not have authority coaching-wise.  I wanted to work with him [Jones] and Wade and help in any way that I possibly could.  We finally agreed the coaching thing wouldn’t be in there, but then the contract changed and there were some things in there I couldn’t see being in there, and they were important to [Jones].  He made a lot of concessions, but this was something that was important to him, and I just didn’t feel like I could live with it.  So it didn’t make sense for us to go forward.”
The interview will stream live right here.

  1. I wonder what compels people to believe they have some sort of ‘duty’ to lay bare all the whys and wherefores of an arrangement that didn’t work out.
Why not just say, ‘We talked but could not reach an agreement.’ and leave it at that?

Because it’s the Cowboys and everyone in world must put in their two cents about the who, why, and what.

  3. Thank goodness I hadn’t finished typing in my credit card order for the Welcome fruit basket.
P.S., Jerry’s ruined my childhood favorite team and Owens is pissing in the corner.

  4. The contract provision that prevented the deal required Reeves to address Jerry Jones as “Boss Hog”. Jones just couldn’t let it be removed from the agreement.

Disclosure is a good thing in the NFL. Right now, Jerry’s asking Cowboy fans in DFW to fork over a ton of money for seats in the new stadium. Anything that can be done to give them confidence in the team probably helps.
Of course, I don’t know that this episode would inspire any confidence in anybody, full disclosure or otherwise. The franchise is rapidly turning (back) into a joke.

  6. Not appropriate for Dan Reeves
to carry Wade Phillips’ Duffle Bag.
    Good for you Dan.
    Jerry oughta know better.

  7. I would suggest that Reeves got there with the idea he would have some say over personnel. When he arrived he said he wanted to dump TO, and Jones told him to go sh1t in his hat.

  8. Reeves left after 2 days…Jerrah doesn’t want to give up any of his “power” over personnel or play calling. Jerrah must be trying to do it all…owner, GM and HC, and doesn’t want someone who will question any of his decisions.
Jones needs to use some of his cash and buy a clue….

  9. thank god. reeves has way too much class for this traveling carnival freakshow of a franchise. hey jethro jones, you reap what you sow.
