If there were any lingering doubt regarding the possibility that quarterback Brett Favre will be playing for the Vikings in 2009, there no longer should be.
Owner Zygi Wilf tells Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he’s not interested.
“I would have been interested 15 years ago,” Wilf said, referring to a time that he didn’t own an NFL team.  “No, I’m not interested.  No way.  I think he’s done well, he retired, it’s good.  He’s a great guy.  I’m just happy that we don’t have to keep on facing him.”
Of course, Wilf’s first comments on the matter come only after Favre has retired and claimed that, this time, it’s for real.  Last year, when Favre wanted to play for the Vikings, the only talking by the Vikings involved coach Brad Childress, offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, and Favre.  Not once did Wilf or anyone else say that the Vikings weren’t interested.
In our view, Wilf’s words should be regarded as a strong indication that the Vikings will be doing something in the offseason to upgrade their current quarterback position.  If the team planned to go with Tarvaris Jackson, Gus Frerotte, and John David Booty in 2009, then Wilf surely would be interested in Favre.

  1. I hope the Vikings don’t stand pat. Because Brett is as old as he is, I don’t think the fact that the Vikings/Wilf isn’t interested in him tells us anything about their wanting to go with Jackson and the others. A year ago I would say yes, but not now. There’s no connection between the two imo.

  2. Big deal- after Goodell gave the Vikings a free pass on the tampering charge last year, Wilf makes this statement. I would be more interested in learning what Mr. Wilf thinks of his current QB (using that loosely after watching him throw INT’s in the playoff loss) or the fact that his brilliant head coach actually traded up in the draft for T Jack (off). I would really want to know if Mr. Wilf goes to sleep at night absolutely convinced that Col Klink can really coach or if he’s just a bald headed buffoon that everybody outside the state of MN thinks he is.
Actually, the best question is what he thinks of the name, Los Angeles Vikings? Inquiring minds want to know.

  3. “Joe 6-pack says:

    Welcome, Mr. Garcia to Minnesota”
Not a bad idea, but I’d have concerns about his durability and the fact that he’d only be a temporary fix. They would’ve been better to just start T-Jack all season to allow him time to grow, or to find out for sure that he is not a viable solution.

  4. I think Favre finally and irrevocably is done. It’s not because he lost the desire to play — I think he’d like nothing more than to take the field again — but because nobody wants him. He doesn’t want to face the indignity of hanging out his shingle only to find that no team in the league comes calling.

  5. 15yeas ago? hell, zygi wuld have wanted him last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that….
a fix is still a fix, temperary or not. the biggest failure the vikings can have is if they go another year either not knowing who is/ having t-jack be the starting QB. afterall, what did they accomplish this past year? they went ANOTHER year not knowing who their QB was. another year of that and zygi will be doing somespring cleaning in the middle of winter…

  6. JimmySmith, I’m pretty sure that the Titan’s and Cardinal’s owners are also questioning just why oh why they drafted Vince Young and Matt Leinhart with their first picks of the draft. And I realize that your preferred team didn’t even make it to the playoffs this year, but that’s okay, because they can still suck next season too right?
The Vikes won’t be moving to L.A., I can practically guarantee it. There are teams in much worse financial and stadium trouble, such as St. Louis, that strike me as being a better fit.

  7. “Maybe you should make an anti Favre list”
C’mon, is there really enough space on the www to do that?
Oh, and Broken Down Brett would screw up his record for games started too because he’d be playing on turf a lot more (of course, the frozen tundra may have been as hard as turf anyway).

  8. No, Childress’ first year in Minny was Garcia’s year in Philly. Garcia signed only a one-year deal with Philly.

are the vikings not ranked like 30th or 31st in revenue? i would say that woul put them right smack intothe middle of the conversation for relocation, as they are. so saying tht you can “practically garauntee” that the vikes won’t move is kind of a dumb ting to do… but maybe i am confused.

So, the problem is that Minnesota, is the Land of a Thousand Lakes, and an approximately equal number of Vikings fans.

  11. JimmySmith says:
“Big deal- after Goodell gave the Vikings a free pass on the tampering charge last year…”
Oh, can we whine some more? Don’t forget how Goodell’s refs GIFT WRAPPED the Vikings 5 wins this past season too. Goodell HATES the Packers so much, that he even had the refs screw them over AFTER giving the Vikings the 5 wins to guarantee their NFC North Division title.
    Woe is JimmySmith.

  12. Of course Zygi is gonna publicly say he’s not interested in a player that’s under contract with another team. Ever heard of tampering?

Jeez Florio – you’re such a page-hits whore. You claim to be sick of the guy, yet you just can’t stop writing about him…even stupid, little non-tidbits/NON-NEWS of him. You can’t get enough of him, can you?
It’s pretty sad for someone to so blatantly talk ill, give no respect of someone, yet continually use him to get ratings/page hits, which equals advertising dollars and recognition for you. What a small little person you are Florio…and I’m not talking about your short-man’s complex either.

  14. Drop T-Jac and Old man Gus and pick up Leftwich. I watched both of them play this year at the metrodome and they aren’t the solution. Neither is drafting a rookie and watching him drown.

  15. @kosarsmyidol
T-Jack sucks. Even if he will be better, they can’t continue to waste Adrian Peterson and that Defense for another year of barely winning the division and getting bounced in the first round of the playoffs.
Minnesota’s window is now. All their missing is a QB. All they need is the threat of a passing game to keep the D honest.

  16. leftwich is a statue who telegraphs his throws.
the DL knows where he will be.
and the DBs know where he will throw it.
go ahead and get him, minnehaha!

  17. Either before or after they figure out who their QB will be, they need to figure out who their DTs will be while Williams & Williams serve their steroids suspensions. Good luck there too.
