The Detroit Lions have announced that a contract has been reached with kicker Jason Hanson.
The 17-year veteran has signed a four-year deal.
The team previously had said that, absent a new contract, the franchise tag would be used to keep Hanson off the free-agent market.
So, now that Hanson is under contract, the team that went 0-16 in 2008 will instead be able to use the tag on . . . on . . . on . . . well, this year they likely won’t be using the tag.

Great news. Hanson is fantastically underrated; his 2008 season is as good as any kicker has ever had, on a team that was as bad as any team has ever been. Imagine if the Lions had ever crossed the opponent’s 35!
Peace
Ty
Per Dave Birkett on his blog they have also reworked Daunte’s deal and he is for sure coming back.
detroit use the tag? that’s one way to make a grown man cry!
They also just reported on ESPN Radio that the Lions restructured Culpepper’s deal to keep him in Detroit another year.
They should use it on Leigh Bodden…oh nevermind.
maybe they could use it on the water boy.
that’s like signing the biggest greenest turd in the toilet. It still stinks.
Annnd redo culpeppers deal
I’m surprised that nobody on this site mentions that he should have been selected to the Pro Bowl (wink-wink).
He should have gone to the pro-bowl
should be able to afford walking cane now!
Hanson is already the NFL’s all-time career leader in 50+ yard FGs.
By the time he’s done, Hanson may very well be in the top 3 kickers of all-time.
Maybe they can use the tag on their fans… stop them from going to another team.
If everyone tried as hard as Hanson works, maybe they would have won at least a single game last year?
Congrats to Hanson, he deserves every penny of this contract. Just imagine having to play your whole carrer for the Lions
Pro Bowl……he kicks inside….9 games a year!!!!!!
