BENGALS BRING BACK BENSON

The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that running back Cedric Benson has re-signed with the team.
Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that it’s a two-year, $7 million deal.
“Cedric was a great addition for us last year,” coach Marvin Lewis said.  “And we’re looking to see him pick up right where he left off.”
The Bears picked Benson with the fourth overall selection in the 2005 draft.  But they cut him after two arrests in less than a month last year.
He found no takers, and the Bengals eventually gave him a shot.
Though his per-carry average was in the realm of Reggie Bush, Benson came on as the year unfolded, moving the chains even without much of a passing game.
“Cedric was recognized as an elite talent coming out of college,” Lewis said.  “His years in Chicago weren’t what he hoped for, but he was able to give us a lift on the field and be a great presence in the locker room.  He earned everyone’s respect, and we’re excited to let him continue to grow in our system.”
Derrick Ward visited the Bengals in the early days of free agency, but we’d heard that Benson was their top priority.  Apparently, a free-agent trip to Houston by Benson prompted the Bengals to get it done.

  1. “What with Odell Thurman off the team and Chris Henry being quiet, we just haven’t had enough players making it to the police blotter lately.” Said coach Marvin Lewis. “We hope the addition of Cedric Benson will help rectify that.”

  2. Wasn’t this guy professing his love for Texas hours earlier? I guess not everything is bigger in Texas – like contracts. Hi-oooooo!

  3. televised court hearings in place of games? Now that’s the team I want to be a part of!

  4. Now if only the Kitties could just somehow figure out a way to harness Benson’s awesomeness during practice and channel it to Sunday afternoons…Lord knows the Bears couldn’t.

I’ll admit it’s not ideal, but Benson’s been pretty quiet for a while. As long as they keep him off the Ohio River, he should be OK. He’s been saying the right things about maturing and such, which is better than Thurman or Henry have done.
Seeing as how the Bengals didn’t have a RB on their roster who had ever done anything in the NFL, this was sort of a necessity.

  6. 2 years 7 million. Not bad for a guy who started out as the Tate Family butler and worked his way up to Lt. Governor…and Missy Gold was just acquired by the Cowboys as a backup QB.

  7. The Bengals got CedBen for an extra year at the cost of approx. $500,000 by signing him straight-up instead of tagging him like Florio suggested.

  8. Mike had the right idea, regardless of how the chips fell. The Bengals needed him. I know that he’s a bum as far as overall skill, but when trying to find a stop-gap running backs go, he’s the pick of the litter. (I realize that the destinction I gave to CedBen is like being the smartest person with Down Syndrome, but it’s the truth)

  9. One of the most underrated running backs in the league last year just because of his reputation. It will be exciting to see what he can do with Palmer back.

  10. To echo what NonYahooHotmailAcct and Burritto said – Are you sure you still want to put the Franchise Tag on this guy, Florio? 1 year for 9.5 million?
Come on man, it’s pretty hard to take you seriously when you say asinine crap like that. Do you even LIKE football?

  11. Benson is one Stanky (which is even worse than stinky)Turd. He will fit right in with the idiots over there.
