NEWMAN: ROMO DISTRACTED BY DATING JESSICA SIMPSON

Even in the wake of wide receiver Terrell Owens’ forced exit from Dallas courtesy of owner Jerry Jones, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo still isn’t immune to criticism from his teammates.
In a recent interview with Joe Trahan of WFFA in Dallas, per Tim MacMahon of the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman took a shot at Romo where he said that the celebrity quarterback might be too caught up in the high-profile glare that goes with dating singer/actress Jessica Simpson.
When asked to respond to former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman’s comments that Romo “hasn’t fully grasped what being the Cowboys quarterback is all about,” Newman didn’t hold back.
“I think that with the situation Tony was in, I think that kind of maybe hurt him a little bit – being a first-year starter, then you have the limelight with his girlfriend and situations of that nature,” Newman said. “It’s going to take away from him being a quarterback, being a successful quarterback.
“He won 13 games and everything was perfect, but now after this past season, it was, ‘Is he doing enough for the team? Is he working hard enough? You know, he’s got this girlfriend, so …’ I think that once he inherited the starting quarterback job and his relationship got into the national media attention, I think that that was something that definitely hurt and took away from Tony Romo being a great quarterback.”
As MacMahon points out, Newman clearly wasn’t joking around.
And Newman, who has a lot of credibility in the locker room and in the media for his bluntly honest takes, might not be speaking only for himself at Valley Ranch.

No other 9-7 team could possibly get as much media play as the cowgirls. The media treats them as though they’ve won a playoff game this century…

  2. Colinito says: Mar 16, 2009 4:59 PM

@BringingTheWood: maybe b/c they are fun to watch?? And I’m not a fan. But I’d rather watch them than 2/3 of the other teams in the league.

  3. SC_Raven_Fan says: Mar 16, 2009 4:59 PM

The Golden Boys of SF have 5 rings too, but don’t get the same exposure. Stupid.

  4. The Jimmy says: Mar 16, 2009 4:59 PM

    Tom Brady seems to manage.
Maybe Romo just isn’t that great.

  5. SFENDER says: Mar 16, 2009 5:00 PM

    A distraction well worth it.

  6. DC_Bengals_Fan says: Mar 16, 2009 5:02 PM

If you read what Newman said, it wasn’t as bad as billed. Florio’s headline was a little misleading – it didn’t seem that Newman said Romo was distracted, but that the constant media questions of WHETHER Romo was distracted by Simpson ended up being a distraction themselves. Quite a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Newman also implied that the team underperforming led to a lot of questions that wouldn’t have arisen on a more successful team, which is always true.
I’m no Cowboy fan (see username), but I think Newman made a fairly well thought out statement that didn’t throw Romo under the bus. I’d recommend he keep these things in-house, though, because the average reporter isn’t going to pay attention to what you actually say when a juicier headline sells.

  7. JimmyLions says: Mar 16, 2009 5:02 PM

If T.O. had made the same comments, you guys would be stringing him up by his thumbs for being such a divisive force in the locker room. Funny how when someone else calls out Romo he’s just keeping it real. But it’s funnier how the media in general would rather talk about T.O. than NFL players who’ve been arrested for committing real crimes.

  8. litzsout619 says: Mar 16, 2009 5:05 PM

I think Tony is more concerned about Jessica and her “FRONT BUTT” issue, she’s just not the flavor of the month anymore. He could get any women in the world and he goes for the inmature lil snappper?

  9. MIBucs1982 says: Mar 16, 2009 5:06 PM

I don’t read that as him taking a shot. I hear him just admitting it was a distraction. Two very different things.
I think you’re trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill here, Mike.

  10. Heinekenfun says: Mar 16, 2009 5:06 PM

Romo is the next Stoney Case.

  11. klh565 says: Mar 16, 2009 5:07 PM

uh…I’m sorry. Who cares? The cowboys are of interest to those in Texas or those who wish they were–and not any of the rest of us.

  12. goner says: Mar 16, 2009 5:10 PM

Newman may be right but it only points out how sorry the coaching staff for the Dallas Cowboys really is. If your QB is not performing is it not the head coach offensive coordinator or qb coach job to get the player up to speed? I can’t believe Romo has the power to slack off and the entire Dallas organization is powerless to do anything about it. Jerry see if you can get Eldarado back and send Wade!

  13. sgcrys says: Mar 16, 2009 5:11 PM

Generally I only cheer for the Cowboys when they’re playing the Raiders, but seriously, how many times did the non-existent Dallas secondary get burned last year. Sure Romo had his ups and downs, but the lack of defense (outside of Ware) pulled that team down (to which I laughed many a Sunday).

  14. insanity20mike says: Mar 16, 2009 5:13 PM

With Peppers going to NE.. the hopes for all other 31 teams in winning a Superbowl has died.. =(

  15. Ralph GreNader says: Mar 16, 2009 5:15 PM

Hmmm. I thought dumping TO was supposed to bring harmony to the city. Terence Newman is a dumbass or its a power play to get himself cut.
Get a clue, Bub. You look like a moron.

  16. beashmow says: Mar 16, 2009 5:15 PM

I could see how dating Jessica Simpson might be distracting.

  17. shuxion says: Mar 16, 2009 5:18 PM

I’d be distracted too. After seeing that rack I doubt I could think of anything else.

  18. MikeTX says: Mar 16, 2009 5:20 PM

i live in Dallas and T-Newmans opinion is very heralded down here, Romo is seen as great but ‘better get it together.’ With TO leaving, the team willimprove, its just in which area isthe question? Its all up to them now…

  19. mikeyhigs says: Mar 16, 2009 5:20 PM

Jessica Simpson is just a front. Romo is secretly dating Troy Aikman

  20. mad555 says: Mar 16, 2009 5:21 PM

    @JimmyLions…
If to made this comment on top of the rest of his backhanded commments then yes, it would have added to the divisivness he contributed to the team while he was there. just to let it be known I also hate dallas and to.

  21. caramello1976 says: Mar 16, 2009 5:23 PM

Man, I’m telling you guys, it won’t be long before Florio is working for ESPN. This is the type “sensationalistic” headline they are good for. Florio are you in Stan Van Gundy related? I ask cuz you’re a “master of panic” just like SVG. (Thanks Shaq)

  22. Akshun says: Mar 16, 2009 5:27 PM

I just can’t wait to find out what Excuse the Cowboys use this year for not making the playoffs again without TO to blame!

  23. GZ says: Mar 16, 2009 5:28 PM

‘DC_Bengals_Fan’ got it exactly right. Per usual, its Florio being overly dramatic — in his defense, its likely for site hits.

  24. EskinSux says: Mar 16, 2009 5:31 PM

Yeah….It was Jessica Simpsons fault the entire team laid down like dogs with a playoff berth on the line…Give me a break…

  25. jmikeh says: Mar 16, 2009 5:32 PM

When asked to respond to Cowboys cornerback Terrence Newman’s contention that Romo has been distracted by dating Jessica Simpson, PFT Nation replied, “No shit. Jealous??”

  26. KBall7326 says: Mar 16, 2009 5:36 PM

In that same interview Newman mentions how opposing teams “were calling out what plays we were going to run”. I think that might have had more to do with the Cowboys failures than Jessica Simpson.

  27. myusernamestinks says: Mar 16, 2009 5:37 PM

    ——————–
When the Dallas coaching staff is mostly the hand puppets of Jerruh, then they exert little actual influence on the players. When the owner overrides the coach on any given occasion, the players tune the coach out. Maybe JJ should hire a real coach, and let him, you know, coach.

  29. Tony C says: Mar 16, 2009 5:47 PM

Well, look at it this way, the way Jessica Simpson has been gaining weight lately, the Cowboys will have to be in the market for a new QB because she will at some point EAT Tony Romo anyways

  30. Deel says: Mar 16, 2009 5:47 PM

I’m sure former Mr. Most Eligable Batchler (Texas Edition) Troy Aikman tanked too, what with the rumors (and reality) of his celebrity dating. Probably should have won 5-6 Super Bowls himself I guess.

  31. DJSlyBri says: Mar 16, 2009 5:52 PM

At least whatever company Romo endorses won’t have to put out commercials to show people that he likes girls, unlike a certain former QB. You know the one, where in a pickup game the certain QB gets sacked by this sweet piece and he goes back into the huddle and calls for the same play…

Reached Monday, Newman said he doesn’t believe the relationship affects Romo, “but the public perception is that it does affect him.”

  34. Proman1 says: Mar 16, 2009 6:02 PM

It’s funny how all these excuses come up. Anyone ever think that maybe Romo isn’t that great and he chokes when it counts?? This story sucks…who cares. F the Cowboys.

  35. Slow Joe says: Mar 16, 2009 6:03 PM

This is basically what I read in this piece:
Mike Florio: Terrance Newman RIPPED Tony Romo to shreds!! When asked if Jessica Simpson was a distraction, he didn’t hold back!!! There is SERIOUS DRAMA in Big D!!! Wait until you read about the way Newman called Romo out right here!!!! Read:
Newman: I think Romo might be a little distracted and should probably focus on football a little more.
Mike Florio: OMG! Can you believe that! I’ll be surprised if there isn’t a UFC cage match between these two in the offseason! There is BIG DRAMA IN BIG D! Please click on my ads.

  36. DandyDodgeRoboQB says: Mar 16, 2009 6:04 PM

WTF? Newman needs to spend less time talking about another player’s woman and more time on being less injury prone.

LOL awesome post! I agree with TNew, Romo needs to focus on his football career instead of his hollywood one. Parcells said never become and celebrity QB, and if romo doesn’t get his ish’ together, he’ll just be another QB in a long line to replace Troy Aikman…

  39. DCFAN says: Mar 16, 2009 6:41 PM

Hey Raven, no one cares about the 49ers because they have sucked for years now. The Cowboys are at least competitve with good teams. The Cowboys are popular and people want to see Americas team. I’m a Cowboys fan and personally hate the media infatuation with the team. No T.O. means hopefully less media crap.

  44. JimmySmith says: Mar 16, 2009 7:28 PM

What a pile of steaming cows$hit. Think of your own professional workplace, since when is your co-worker’s sex life any of your business?
Did Jessica Simpson fumble the snap in the playoff lose to the Seahawks? Did Ms. Simpson fire the ball into double coverage in the following year’s playoff loss to the Giants. Correct me if I am wrong, but Jessica Simpson didn’t even make it to Philadelphia to help lose 44-6 with the playoffs on the line.
No, I think there are many reasons the Cowgirls haven’t won a playoff game in over a decade and Jessica Simpson wouldn’t even rank in the top 10,000 reasons why.

  45. Brewster says: Mar 16, 2009 7:28 PM

” I think that once he inherited the starting quarterback job ”
This may be the worst line in the whole piece. I don’t think anyone “inherits” a job under Bill Parcells, you earn it and Romo did.
The idea of blaming Romo for Dallas’s woes is pretty lame. He may have had, he did, a less than stellar year last year but his performance was more than adequate. There is so much going on in that three ring circus down in Dallas that no one person can be blamed for their failures in recent years, except perhaps the one person who can do the most to fix it, Mr. Jerrah Jones.

  46. wolverine21 says: Mar 16, 2009 7:30 PM

  52. empty13 says: Mar 16, 2009 8:09 PM

hell, ask her what butterfingers romo had on his hands when he fumbled the snap in seattle.
romo isnt putting enough work in since he became the starter. it is obvious. but he isnt the only starter in the league with that problem.
then again… i dont care what anyone says. if you could have her around to distract you… football is a distant second… or third…
    or lower.

  53. 44-6-andthenRomofainted says: Mar 16, 2009 8:27 PM

What’s that? In what alternate universe do Ain’ts fans have the gall to criticize any other team? Bitch, please. The Ain’ts could win their next 100 games and they’d still have an all-time losing record. In THEIR ENTIRE HISTORY, they’ve won exactly two more playoff games than the Cowboys have won in the last decade. STFU and get a real team, scrub.

I guess you’d have a point if those guys had combined for, say 70 total yards in their last four games against the Cowboys… but they didn’t. You must have gotten into the real Andy Reid’s Drug Emporium, otherwise known as his house.

insanity20mike stated that Peppers is going to NE….not true. Julius Peppers has signed a new contract with the Panthers and is staying put. He’ll be paid approximately 1 million dollars per game (far too much), but that wasn’t the issue. He’s had a change of heart and would love to stay in the Carolinas and play football with his teamates he’s established a rapport with.
