Hakeem Nicks Packs On The Pounds

Last week, Penn State’s Aaron Maybin raised eyebrows at his Pro Day with a performance fueled by a stunning, “you-wouldn’t-like-me-when-I’m-angry” increase in his physique.
North Carolina’s Hakeem Nicks also showed off a new body last week – but not in a good way.
Since tweaking his hamstring at the Scouting Combine, Nicks had been unable to work out.  And, as a result, he gained roughly 15 pounds in three weeks.  (NFL.com has the number as 14; we’ve heard that he gained 16 pounds.)
As one scout who attended the session opined:  “He looked like a fat tight end not a lean receiver. . . .  He’s got to have a weight problem.  This is the most important few months of his life and he gains a ton of weight.  I don’t get it.  Many scouts and coaches went away very disappointed.”
That said, we’re told that Nicks already has shed much of the weight, and that he’ll be working out privately for the Bears and the Dolphins.

Sounds like someone in the lower half of the first round is trying to get Nicks to slide their way.

    Weight Gain > Wonderlic = ($)

Fits in with the Wonderlic score and being stupid.

I don’t care how fat he is, that catch he made against WVU in the Whogivesacrap.com Bowl was one of the sickest of all time.
A guy with hands like that can play for my team any day.

Am I the only one that can’t stop singing, “Fat guy in a little coat”

Funny if he ends up with the Raiders.

Some of these scouts don’t make sense. The kid obviously was injured and he gained weight. Just like how one scout called Andre Smith’s pro day “The worst one I have ever seen.” In which alot of the media members stated that during position drills he looked good, and he had a above average pro day. He is still a very young man with a very high ceiling.

Coached by Butch Davis. You may have heard of him.

David Boston doesn’t see what the problem is.

  13. Tuck You says: Mar 24, 2009 2:05 PM

Classic example of a player decreasing his stock so that he’ll slip to a good team like, oh say, the Giants…hahahaha

  14. TheCoop says: Mar 24, 2009 2:06 PM

Oh yeah, Butch Davis. I HAVE heard of him. The guy who basically single-handedly ruined the Cleveland Browns franchise for all eternity?
    That Butch Davis?

Wasn’t he that crappy coach that quit his NFL gig half-way through a season?? No wonder his players are retarded and fat.

  17. freshcope says: Mar 24, 2009 2:22 PM

Didn’t Davis have a nervous breakdown in the NFL??

  18. tkebean says: Mar 24, 2009 2:22 PM

Butch Davis? Yeah, I’ve heard of him. He’s that football coach that coached browns and coached them into being the doormat of AFC North for quite a few years. Cincy, Pittsburgh and Baltimore all love the guy…only because he’s a horrible coach though.

There is only one way to find out the truth. Put Mr. Nicks in a room with Jack Bauer. Give Jack a toaster, a bucket of water, 3 scorpions, a pipe cleaner, and a copy of Carl Lewis singing the national anthem. We’ll find out who’s behind the gravy conspiracy or Nicks will suffer worse than Florio’s favorite chair on burrito night.

It’s hard to gain 16 pounds in three weeks when your trying much less on accident.

  21. jdwfool says: Mar 24, 2009 2:31 PM

How could he have shed a lot of the weight, if his Pro Day was yesterday?

  22. dawk20db says: Mar 24, 2009 2:33 PM

    Butch Who?

  23. TCLARK says: Mar 24, 2009 2:39 PM

The same Butch Davis that won a national chapionship at Miami. The same Butch Davis that was a “Pro Factory” back at the “U”. Blame the Browns front office for what happend in Cleveland.

RE: How could he have shed a lot of the weight, if his Pro Day was yesterday?
The UNC Pro Day was last week. Gil Brandt just reported on it yesterday.

  25. fidster says: Mar 24, 2009 2:50 PM

    I couldn’t gain 15 pounds in 3 weeks if I tried.
Maybe he’s been training with that “half ton man” from TV.
Or maybe Darrius Heyward-Bey has been spiking Nicks’ G2 with milk shakes.

  26. ACDC84 says: Mar 24, 2009 2:58 PM

Everyone is making too big of a deal of this WR that has gained a few pounds. He’ll still be an awesome pro.
    Signed,
    Mike Williams

  28. rusH1023 says: Mar 24, 2009 3:10 PM

I just saw a pic of him from the Pro Day. Didn’t look like a fat TE to me. Someone’s trying to ruin his stock, IMO. Ahh, the sh!t Wall Street teaches us.

What year was that that Butch won that National Championship?? I can only find when Larry Coker won it after he left. Get your facts straight.

  30. TCLARK says: Mar 24, 2009 4:07 PM

As for Butch Davis. These where his guy. But hey what do I know?
Ray Lewis (LB), Yatil Green (WR), Kenard Lang (DE), Kenny Holmes (DE), Duane Starks (CB), Edgerrin James (RB), Bubba Franks (TE), Dan Morgan (LB), Damion Lewis (DT), Santana Moss (WR), Reggie Wayne (WR), Bryant McKinnie (OT), Jeremy Shockey (TE), Phillip Buchanon (CB), Ed Reed (S), Mike Rumph (CB), Andre Johnson (WR), Jerome McDougle (DE), Willis McGahee (RB), William Joseph (DT), Sean Taylor (S), Kellen Winslow II (TE), Jonathan Vilma (LB), D.J. Williams (LB), Vernon Carey (OT), Vince Wilfork (DT), Antrel Rolle (CB), and Kelly Jennings (CB)[2]. Moreover, Davis’ smaller-than-usual recruiting classes are widely considered to have laid the foundation for Miami’s undefeated national championship team of 2001 (under Davis’ former offensive coordinator, Larry Coker), since many of his recruits were forced to play right away.

Maybe Hakeem is on a budget and the only workout former-pro ringer that he could afford was Mike Williams…

  32. Rutabaga says: Mar 24, 2009 7:08 PM

TCLARK which players do you think earned more money while playing with Davis as coach, the players you listed from the U or the Cleveland Browns?
