Cutler, Ron Turner Have Rocky History

Newly-acquired Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is known for holding a grudge, and he still seems to be holding one against Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner stemming from an old recruiting dispute, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Citing people close to Cutler and a Denver Post column, some fences may need to be mended between Cutler and Turner now that they’re going to work together.
As a high school senior in southern Indiana, Cutler accepted a scholarship to Illinois where Turner was the head coach at the time. Cutler committed without visiting campus, though, and when he arrived for an official visit Turner reportedly pulled the offer.
“When Jay went for his official visit, the coach told him they were rescinding the offer because they had some hot-shot quarterback from California,” Heritage Hills athletic director Jay Burch told Denver Post columnist Woody Paige.
Illinois wound up signing Mike Dlugolecki, who wound up transferring to San Diego State. And Cutler had turned down offers from Purdue, Duke and Maryland to go to Illinois before winding up at Vanderbilt.
“It’s not right,” Jake Cutler, Cutler’s father, told “I still have a bitter taste in my mouth.”
In the past, Turner has denied that Illinois rescinded the scholarship offer because Cutler was never made an offer.
Obviously, they’ll need to rehearse their lines a bit before the press conference today.

in other news, Cutler asked to be traded to the Browns after realizing turner was his new coach…

  2. dashoe says: Apr 3, 2009 12:52 PM

I think Jay Cutler will be getting the last laugh and all of you Josh McDaniels lovers,i.e. Florio, Peter King…. will be looking back at another Belichick disciple who not only failed but became a part of NFL history for the dumbest trade ever.

  3. JSpicoli says: Apr 3, 2009 12:52 PM

Turner should try to text him.

    This is awesome.
Now that TO is near the end of his career, we needed to find more popcorn-worthy entertainment.

Turner is obviously lying. Why would a kid turn down other guarantees for a non guarantee?

My Rocky history is that I saw I, II, and III in the theaters waited for IV on video and never saw V and VI.

  7. BigTenLB says: Apr 3, 2009 12:55 PM

Try telling the whole story when you write and article , Cutler only attended Vanderbilt because it was the only school that offered him a chance to play Quarterback….every other school that recruited him wanted him to play Safety.–Offense.html

Well, IMO we know where his whining comes from.
So, Norv’s bro now gets to work with the brat.

  14. Inmate says: Apr 3, 2009 1:04 PM

Turner will probably get his eyes scratched out, and a kick in the shin. Then they will give Cutler his binkie {Huge new, Overblown contract…} And put him down for his nap.

  15. r5156c says: Apr 3, 2009 1:06 PM

Ron Turner should have been part of the “Package” to land Cutler. He’ll be gone next year anyway.

  16. longdarkface says: Apr 3, 2009 1:07 PM

maybe the Bears should just get ready to trade him now.

  17. Rob0769 says: Apr 3, 2009 1:08 PM

Oh boy! If Headcase Cutler already hates his offensive coordinator, just wait for the fireworks if he starts off with a rocky start.
I am surprised to read though that Cutler is one to hold a grudge. He seems to let these types of things just roll off of him.

  18. Boltschick says: Apr 3, 2009 1:09 PM

It’s interesting how people like Cutler attract the same situations over and over again in their lives. First the slight by Turner, then Philip Rivers (for saying “Atta Baby”), then McDaniels. Cutler will attract these situatons again and again in his life until he stops getting offended so easily.
How ironic that he thought he could leave the bad feelings behind in Denver and winds up confronting the same situation with his new team.

  19. packerswin says: Apr 3, 2009 1:12 PM

LMFAO, I loved the trade to Chicago because they gave up way too much for Cutler and he is hardly better than Orton and then this. This just about makes this offseason the best ever for the Packers. Let’s see if Cutler demands to be traded from Chicago, LMFAO!

  20. ncpeters says: Apr 3, 2009 1:12 PM

Is there anyone in the league Cutler doesn’t have a grudge with? Apparently holding grudges is something Cutler got from his daddy.

  21. dustindmw says: Apr 3, 2009 1:14 PM

They pulled the offer because at the time he was still contemplating playing basketball. Illinois wanted him to be committed to their program and be assured that he would focus on football and they couldn’t get that assurance. I don’t see how that’s unfair. Why do you think Cutler ended up at Vanderbilt? And who cares what his father thinks, that has zero impact on how Jay Cutler the quarterback performs with this team and interacts with Ron Turner.

  22. Kotite says: Apr 3, 2009 1:15 PM

Not that it’s really related to the story so much, but Woody Paige is a total d-bag who is about as valuable to the sports world as Frank Calliendo. How he has a job while millions are getting laid off is an enigma.

  27. bartholder22 says: Apr 3, 2009 1:26 PM

This just in.. Cutler is in a dispute w/ his endocrine system.. apparently agent Bus Cook and Cutler have sent several email’s to his pancreas about its ability to produce insulin.. His pancreas had no comment.. Meanwhile, Cutler’s father is blaming God, his wife and Josh McDaniels for this current dilema, “Jay is the best QB in the NFL with a losing record and his pancreas needs to man up and take care of him, if the Broncos would show some support and were honest with his pancreas this situation could’ve been resolved”. Cutler’s mom had no comment.

  28. harleyknucklehead says: Apr 3, 2009 1:28 PM

    Trade the whiner!!

  29. HarrisonHits says: Apr 3, 2009 1:29 PM

Great job by the Donks trading him to a team with crappy receivers and an OC he hates. Turner obviously “hurt his feelings” in the past and we’ve just seen what happens when a coach does that. It would be hilarious if the Bears gave up so much for Cutler and in the first couple weeks he has a meltdown with Turner. What’s next, Jay-baby demanding the Bears fire Turner ?
Speaking of Cutler, how come there has been no press conference or statement from him saying how happy he is to be a Bear ?

  30. Campy5 says: Apr 3, 2009 1:30 PM

Mr. Jake Cutler, the gift that keeps on giving

  31. sullijo says: Apr 3, 2009 1:30 PM

Oh, boy. Here we go again with this guy. Next, he’ll want a new contract……..

  32. TroyKelsey says: Apr 3, 2009 1:30 PM

Seriously, what is wrong with this kid? He just got bounced from Denver for acting like a hyper-sensitive primadonna. Now, he hasn’t even suited up for the Bears once and already his enablers are stoking a fire with the Bears’ coaching staff? My God, does NOBODY connected with this guy have an ounce of common sense? STFU Cutler and play ball… He holds a grudge against the Bears’ OC due to hard feelings over recruiting when he was a senior in high school… Really?
And some of us in this world have real problems – not manufactured, egocentric bull shite… What a putz… Grow up and get a pair Cutler…

  33. pdcreative says: Apr 3, 2009 1:31 PM

Man, Jay Cutler really needs to grow the hell up. The guy’s supposed to be not just a star player, but a leader and he’s acting like an overly sensitive little girl. What a whiner.

  34. clintdogg says: Apr 3, 2009 1:37 PM

I love it. Crybaby Cutler is hopefully realizing that the grass isn’t always greener, and he may have burned a bridge he had hoped he’d never want to cross again and now is forced to. Of course he could always demand another trade lol.
I hope the Broncos traded him to the Bears on purpose for that reason. Karma is a bitch.

  35. Staff Sergeant Bandazewski says: Apr 3, 2009 1:43 PM

who cares? its not like he missed out on a chance at the NFL.

  36. centeredwarrior says: Apr 3, 2009 1:45 PM

You know what makes that “bitter taste” go away? The always sweet smell of “new contract” with guaranteed money.
    The saga continues . . .

  37. dashoe says: Apr 3, 2009 1:47 PM

“Illinois wound up signing Mike Dlugolecki, who wound up transferring to San Diego State.”
Something tells me Ron Turner has realized the collosal error he made which resulted in his firing from Illinois.
Josh McDaniels will soon meet the same fate.

  38. Doug Plank says: Apr 3, 2009 1:51 PM

    Matt, not Mike, Dlugolecki.

  39. DFWtmillaw says: Apr 3, 2009 1:52 PM

Jay “the Pacifier” Cutler to Ron Turner: “Luuuuuucy, you’ve got some ‘splainin’ to do!”

  40. mike428 says: Apr 3, 2009 1:52 PM

Bus Cook – “OK, Jay let’s try this again…. I’m the reporter, OK? Jay, do you still have hard feelings about Ron Turner?”
Jay Cutler – “I love Chicago deep dish pizza!”
    Bus Cook – “Whew!”
Jay Cutler – “Any chance of me going to the Jets?”
    Bus Cook – “D’oh!”

  41. jeffovikes says: Apr 3, 2009 1:54 PM

I can’t BELIEVE that Cutler would hold a grudge!!!!!

  42. richpats says: Apr 3, 2009 1:57 PM

So will Cutler be demanding an apology/trade from Chicago in the near future? Cutler now just looks like a ego-maniac who couldn’t stomach that McDaniels wanted Cassel instead.

  43. MarkB says: Apr 3, 2009 1:59 PM

The fun starts anew. And notice that Daddy Dearest is in the thick of it. I bet there was a football in the crib when Mommy brought Little Jakey home from the hospital.

  44. vegas42 says: Apr 3, 2009 2:01 PM

Is any media outlet going to try and get Shanahan’s take on all this? It may be morbid curiosity, but I’d really like to hear what he has to say…

  45. superius says: Apr 3, 2009 2:05 PM

Is Cutler avoiding calls from him yet? When is he going to be traded because he doesn’t trust one of the coaches?

  46. JimmySmith says: Apr 3, 2009 2:09 PM

Great, I hope Cutler pulls a hissy fit on camera just to set the tone for his days in Chicago.

  47. the beez says: Apr 3, 2009 2:12 PM

Holy non-story…. whatever sells the papers or whatever the kids are reading these days.

  48. Darby says: Apr 3, 2009 2:16 PM

Already a conflict with a coach? Bwahahahaha!

  49. bizurk says: Apr 3, 2009 2:19 PM

Finally….. football’s version of Eric Lindros. Fragile ego’d star player, with meddlesome parents holds franchise by the balls, forces ludicrous trade.
Ask the Avalanche how that deal worked out. We’ll see what happens with those draft picks, but the Broncos gave up an adequate QB (with some nice skills) for an adequate QB (with mediocre skills) and a whole lotta good youth….. Now, the Bears have an employee with Cutler issues and (oh yeah) Cutler’s probably going to want a new deal fairly soon. Add in the laughable Pace pickup and it’s clear that Angelo and Lovie are swinging for the fences.

    Dear Chicago
All of my clients are mature 100% honest men who when their word is given it is never broken. They never get offended or say outlandish things because of it.
By the way Jay Jay thinks the team should immediately get Randy Moss from the Pat’s and Berriman from the Vikes. If not he wants his immediate release so he can go to the Vikes
    Bus Cook
P.S. it sure is nice being where you are adored

  53. East Bay Ray says: Apr 3, 2009 2:24 PM

So, the Bears just paid a king’s ransom for a QB who A.) cried his way off his former team and B.) hates their offensive coordinator.
    Risky move? Or stupid move?

wrong,i think he told cutler everything was honkey dory, but

Wonder how long we’ll have to wait to hear that he’s holding out for a new contract.

  64. DarnSkippy says: Apr 3, 2009 3:11 PM

The irony is that if he accepted the scholarship to Purdue he would have competed with Kyle Orton to be the starter.

  65. tafiti says: Apr 3, 2009 3:13 PM

Gee, what a surprise. Cutler got his feelings hurt during his college recruitment days, too, and still can’t let it go. The more things change the more they stay the same.
If I were a Broncos fan, I’d say good riddance. Go get Mark Sanchez and start over with a classy guy, not some whiny b**ch. Hell, see what Kyle Orton gives you this year, rebuild your defense, and get a QB in next year’s draft. They’ll have 2 picks in Rd 1 again.
