Laurinaitis: "I Think They Realize What They're Getting"

Ohio State inside linebacker James Laurinaitis, whose well-known father wrestled under the name “Animal” with The Road Warriors’ championship tag team, has drawn heavy interest from NFL teams, according to Scout.com.
Laurinaitis has taken official visits with the New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The three-time All-American selection conducted private workouts with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons and the St. Louis Rams, and held formal interviews with the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and the Indianapolis Colts at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Laurinaitis is a past winner of the Nagurski Award, Dick Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert and Ronnie Lott trophies.
He has been projected as a first-day draft pick.
“I’ve talked to a few teams who really want to draft me as the foundation of their defense, and I think they realize what they’re getting when they get me,” Laurinaitis told Scout.com. “They’re getting a hard-working kid who will never take a play off, works extremely hard and will always put the team before him. They’re going to get a guy who sets goals high and who achieves them.
“That’s one thing that I learned from my dad, the day you get satisfied in the way you are as a player, you should just quit because you’re going to start becoming a worse player if you’re satisfied with yourself.”
The 6’2,” 244-pounder has run the 40-yard dash in 4.75 seconds. As a senior, Laurinaitis recorded 130 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions.

Nah, Animal from Legion Of Doom

Come on Florio, you didn’t watch WWF in the 90s? Animal was part of Legion of Doom with his partner Hawk.

  5. Tr3pidation says: Apr 20, 2009 2:23 PM

Vernon Gholston, Bobby Carpenter, AJ Hawk, Andy Katzenmoyer, Craig Powell. Good luck James.

This kid is going to anchor someone’s D for the next decade.
I love how people fall in love with 40 times and cone drills. Forget that nonsense what does a guy do with the pads and helmets on?
Put in the tape. This kid flys to the football every play. Someone is getting a steal at the bottom of round 1.

well, the likes of kiper regale us all with tales of guys with all the physical tools, superhuman strength and hips that swivel… and those guys holdout, take games off, take plays off, dont prepare, complain about being dissed…
but per the likes of kiper, this kind of guy “only” has the motor. but this is the kind of guy who shows up every day/play/game, knows his job, and can lead. at least he can lead those who will be led.
besides, we have some so-called MLBs out there who really dont go sideline-to-sideline or shed blocks (altho kiper would say they do), and they cry to get the equivalent of 2 nose tackles in front of them in order to keep them clean and keep their stats up.

Wow, whoever told him to say that deserves a raise.

No, his father is Animal of the Road Warriors, also known as The Legion of Doom. And if he doesn’t make it in pro-football, he’ll almopst certainly go into wrestling, ’cause aside from his dad being a wrrestler, his uncle is a high ranking official in WWE, who happens to be in charge of hiring and firing.

I hope the Packers draft Laurinaitis in the second round. With AJ Hawk, we can call the two inside linebackers The Legion of Doom. And after a sack they can stick their tongues out and yell “WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT AAAAAAAAAAAAA RUUUUUUUUUUUUUSHHHHHHHHHH!”

This guy is yet another chump linebacker from the Slowhio State Suckeyes who’s ready to be a big, fat, NFL BUST!!!
Tell me, Laurie, how did you do against Florida and LSU in those title games, when you weren’t playing against the sucky, slow competition from the Big-ZERO?
No, Laurie was specificaly TARGETED by the LSU offense in the 2008 Championship game. Why? Because he can’t cover backs in the flat. He can’t cover recievers in the slot. And he sure as hell can’t cover tight ends up the seem. At least, NFL-calibur backs, receivers, and tight ends. He does fine against the giant suck that is the Big-ZERO.
Katzenmoyer. Carpenter. Hawk. This loser. What do they all have in common? They’re all crap linebackers from Slowhio State who have or will bust out of the NFL.
The SEC is where it’s at people. Don’t draft this guy. He sucks against legit competition, just like his team and conference.

  12. Matt Hoover says: Apr 20, 2009 2:37 PM

No, dummy, he was Road Warrior Animal of the Legion of Doom. You know, mohawks, facepaint, SPIKED SHOULDER PADS. C’mon…get it together.
I’d love to see Laurinaitis become a Chief, but without a 2nd-round pick, I’d say there’s not a good chance that will happen. Unless, of course, the Chiefs trade down and amass a few more picks.
He’ll be gone by pick #40.

  13. revans52us says: Apr 20, 2009 2:38 PM

Someone will get a STEAL with taking James in the late 1st/early 2nd round.

He also learned how to powerbomb a guy from teh top rope and then give him the camel clutch.
Youtube keyword Legion of doom, Jim’s dad is the shorter one in the shoulder pads with spikes.

  16. ncpeters says: Apr 20, 2009 2:49 PM

If Laurinaitis had gone pro last year he probably would have been a top 10 pick, now he’s borderline first round. I have no problem with him staying in school but that cost him a lot of money.

  17. 21 says: Apr 20, 2009 2:56 PM

    Detroit at #20

  18. diehardbearsfan says: Apr 20, 2009 2:59 PM

hell yeah…the road warriors were bad ass….they weren’t tama and haku of the islanders but they were up there. now if his dad was part of demolition he’d warrant a #1 pick…lol

  19. vcbhome says: Apr 20, 2009 3:00 PM

Too bad his father wasn’t George “The Animal” Steele as fans could bring turnbuckles to games and watch his father tear them apart to eat the insides.
Then again, I had heard that “The Government” did something to George to prevent him from procreating.

He did quite well vs LSU. I believe he obtained the BCS record 18 tackles in that game. Yeah, he sucks …
Just another slack jawed yokel south of the mason dixon line who’s entire world view is thru the small prism that is the hillbilly south.

  21. bumblyjack says: Apr 20, 2009 3:09 PM

James, stop talking about your dad. This is about you now.
As a student at The Ohio State University, I am sick of Joe “the Animal” Laurinaitis. I hope James has a great career and makes everyone forget his annoying dad.

  22. mborz says: Apr 20, 2009 3:11 PM

@HobnailedBoot: I’m not going to get in this whole silly “conference war” with you, but all I can say is, as a Steelers fan, I’m extremely happy with the Big 10 talent they’ve gotten in the draft. Most notably LaMaar Woodley and Santonio Holmes.

  23. WalrusCP says: Apr 20, 2009 3:17 PM

The haters forgot to mention Mike Vrabel. Yeah, he was a real OSU linebacker bust. Laurinaitis can flat out play. He’ll be a nice pickup for someone in Round 2.

“The SEC is where it’s at people. Don’t draft this guy. He sucks against legit competition, just like his team and conference. ”
What do Santonio Holmes, Tom Brady, and Desmond Howard have in common?
    Super Bowl MVP’s, Big10 Alums.
Countless other players would also like to disagree that Big10 sucks. Among them; Drew Brees, Aaron Kampman, Bob Sanders, Marion Barber, Julian Peterson, Flozell Adams, Steve Hutchinson, Braylon Edwards, Matt Light, Kris Dielman, Mike Vrabel, Joe Thomas, Charles Woodson….
…I could keep going if you want.

For those of you that have no clue about professional wrestling, Animal and Hawk were known as the Road Warriors in the AWA long before they wrestled as the Legion Of Doom in the old WWF..
They even wrestled as the Road Warriors in the NWA when they feuded with the 4 Horsemen, Midnight Express, Rock and Roll Express, Dusty Rhodes and Magnum TA, and Ivan and Nikita Koloff.. They didn’t go by just the LOD until their WWF days, before that, they were known as the Road Warriors..

  28. ahstoosu82 says: Apr 20, 2009 3:55 PM

How many times are SEC fans going to keep shoving the “The SEC is where it’s at” blah blah blah? We get it. The SEC is the best conference. Congrats. No one has argued that point for nearly four years.

Wow, he did that in a game he lost. Translation: The defense was on the field WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too much. Besides, I seem to remember a tackle he didn’t make against Tim Tebow where Tebow shedded him like a girl. Now imagine having to face Brandon Jacobs doing that 20 times a game. He is a solid linebacker, but not nearly everything the hype is making him out to be.

George “The Animal” Steele did in fact procreate!! His daughter was “Miss Elizabeth”, Macho Man Randy Savage’s ex-wife!!!
    Hope this helps!!
P.S. Is it just me, or does anyone else discount the opinions of posters who resort to insults and name-calling? If you have a valid point, you only cheapen it with the juvenile act!!

  32. Osterhouse says: Apr 20, 2009 4:43 PM

Played against him in highschool…he is a beast

  33. ncpeters says: Apr 20, 2009 4:48 PM

    bonecity7:
That is not true. George “The Animal” Steele is not Miss Elizabeth’s father. One of Miss Elizabeth’s first storylines had to do with Steele having a crush on her. Pretty sure that’s not a storyline you explore with family members, even in the WWF.

They did lose. And you win or lose as a team. Conversely no one in the OSU locker room was ever looking at James Laurinaitis as the reason they lost that football game. This kid is going to give you 100% effort and focus because he doesn’t know any other way. The guy won the Bednarik, Nagurski and Lott being a 3 year starter at an NFL factory school. He’s a 3 time 1st team All American. Forget “hype”. That resume means you’ve backed it up so there is no “hype”. The real question is why is a resume such as his being so scrutinized? Because his 40 time in underwear is more important than his 3+ years of game tape? He’s a safe pick for anyone who drafts him in the end of the 1st round.

  35. Mike Beckwith says: Apr 20, 2009 6:00 PM

Hello, the Animal and Hawk were “The Road Warriors” when they wrestled in the WCW before joining the WWF. Some of you commenters need to buy a clue before you bash others and calling them stupid.

  36. HobnailedBoot says: Apr 20, 2009 6:04 PM

“He had 18 tackles against LSU.”
I’m sorry, Suckeye Fan, but did you actually WATCH that game, or were you too busy crying into your garnet and gray Slowhio State jersey?
Cause if you actually WATCHED the LSU game, you would have seen Laurie getting burnt time and time again by slot receivers, tight ends, and running backs from LSU.
What you WOULD NOT have seen him do was make a tackle behind, on, or even NEAR the line of scrimmage.
Yeah, that’s right, Laurie’s tackles were Keith Brooking Specials: about 8 yards past the line of scrimmage.
This guy is going to be a HUGE bust.
So caveat emptor, NFL teams. Learn from all of the other Suckeye Linebackers who have busted out of the NFL.

  37. EskinSux says: Apr 20, 2009 6:42 PM

As long as coaches tell him his future opponents are “slower than a snail” big ten teams….And don’t use the Phrase BCS……He will make a great special teamer

I would love if the Dolphins picked him as there first round draft pick
    to replace Channing(never had an interception,never had a forced fumble,did have 1.5 sacks in 4 years,but has nice dreads)Crowder
so basically if you can breath you would make a good replacement
    for Crowder

say all you want about how mighty the SEC is. I remember when Michigan hung 41 points on your “dominating” gators defense so dont go bashing on all of the Big Ten. besides how many great qbs not named manning came from the SEC? cause i mean rex grossmen and erick anige and danny worthless.
