An Interesting Theory On The Rams' Supposed Interest In Sanchez

A reader posted an intriguing comment in response to our recent blurb regarding the rumor that the Rams are interested in USC quarterback Mark Sanchez at No. 2.
Maybe, just maybe, the Rams are throwing Sanchez’s name into the mix so that the guys under consideration for the first overall pick won’t shrug their shoulders at the Lions’ best offer and say, “Well, if I don’t get drafted first, I’ll get drafted second.”
So how does this help the Rams?  Well, if the Rams can drive down the price the Lions pay at No. 1 to a guy who fears falling to No. 3 or lower, the Rams will be facing a lower ceiling for the No. 2 pick, whoever that might be.
We still think that the Rams are floating Sanchez’s name because they think that Redskins owner Dan Snyder is ready to give up too much to get Sanchez, and that the Rams want Snyder to think that he’ll need to get all the way to No. 2 to make it happen.
We think that primarily because we don’t think the Rams are smart enough to come up with the contract-value angle, based on their record over the past two years.
With all due respect.

Thanks for that tid bit NBC…..I mean PFT

The Redskins don’t need a QB as badly as they think. Rededicate themselves to the run, shore up the line, and get some good WRs and Campbell is a good enough QB to win for them.

and maybe the rams never went to moon.

  4. emoser says: Apr 22, 2009 11:19 AM

DPR, they may not need a qb, but they’re stupid enough to sell the farm for one anyway. Redskins have the worst FO in the nfl (ok, maybe detroit has them beat).

  5. boltergeist17 says: Apr 22, 2009 11:28 AM

skins dont need a qb, they got campbell and also brennan who has yet to have a chance to prove himself in this league.

Hell, if Ben Roethlisberger can win a superbowl, Jason Campbell should be able to win one with no shoes on. Actually, if Roethlisberger can win one…that sorta gives me some hope to do it myself.

If the Redskins get Sanchez…as a Jets fan I wouldn’t mind taking Campbell of their hands…I think he’s a competent QB, with enough of an arm and ability to make things work in the system Ryan wants to do it in…of course that’s one reason why I don’t think the Jets are all that worried about the QBs they already have, since their primary function will be to hand it to TJ and Leon, and dump off to Cotcherry and Keller but whatever…

After that article Florio, I think you may test POSITIVE…..But it would be cool to see the Skins make a Ditka/Ricky Williams trade to move up to get Sanchez. That will make it easier for me to stay sober (laughing does that) the first day since the second round ends at Midnite.

Dan Snyder is going to ‘make it rain’ at the draft

  10. Chief Wahoo says: Apr 22, 2009 11:33 AM

Campbell will be a good, steady quarterback for many years. I want Denver to give us their two picks (Chiefs/Broncos Swap), so we can get Maualuga and Andre Smith… would be GREAT.

  11. tonyinmd says: Apr 22, 2009 11:37 AM

Considering the Rams tried desperately to float BS out there last year prior to the draft in desperation to get the Ravens to think teams were trading up to get Matt Ryan (and in the process getting half the Ravens draft), I don’t doubt they are floating this nonsense to scare a team into trading thier draft away to them. Frankly, considering all the holes on that team, I don’t blame them.

  12. gjp2030 says: Apr 22, 2009 11:38 AM

That’s total crap..it’s a weak attempt on the Rams part to have someone trade up with them instead of Kansas City to get him since everyone thinks the Seahawks are taking him at 4. If they were really interested in him news would have leaked weeks before the draft. Nice try St. Louis. They’re trading with KC.

While Florio is fascinated by the inner workings of the Steelers, Vikings, Giants, Eagles, Bengals, etc., he routinely shows indifference and ignorance about many other teams, including the Rams. The management of the Rams this year is all new. No more Zygmunt, Linehan, Haslet. Now, this does not mean the new Rams will be smart, it simply means you cannot assume they will continue to be stupid, because the proven stupid people are gone.

  14. Cdn_Mike says: Apr 22, 2009 11:41 AM

    TheDPR,
That sounds like the Vikings theory and how is that working out for them. If your QB stinks the defense will just put 8 in the box and your running back will get pounded. I just prey Peterson’s body can hold up.

Stop pretending like Dan Snyder makes rational decisions regarding personnel.
All this Sanchez talk is killing me. Someone make it stop!

  16. Jux says: Apr 22, 2009 11:43 AM

If accurate, it’s a good move by the Rams. As a Denver fan, I can say it’s always enjoyable to fleece the Redskins out of players and picks.

If I’m the Lions- I’ll give up the # 1 pick -take Campbell and the 13th pick
some additionals picks and a player. They don’t want to pay the # 1 pick anyway…

  19. AvengerRam says: Apr 22, 2009 11:54 AM

    Florio, you’re a hack.
    With all due respect.
How do the decisions made by John Shaw, Jay Zygmunt and Scott Linehan in the past two years pertain to the decisions now being made by Bill Devaney, Kevin Demoff and Steve Spagnuolo?
I know you don’t like little things like facts to get in the way with your oh-so-clever derision, but on this one you’re not even close to the mark.
Maybe you should stick to Seinfeld references.

As much as the draft is exciting, you have to feel bad for the Top 10 and all the money that is being committed to these guys. There should be a rookie salary cap because if you look at the 2005 draft 9/10 first selected were busts and set back franchises.

ahhh the rams are pulling the old “dirty sanchez” move huh. skins will have to combat by trading all picks for yet another 1st round qb bust.

It’s an interesting theory but here is the problem. The Lions are wasting their time with negotiating with three players. Stafford has been projected by just about everyone to go #1 overall. Smith and Curry 2 and 3. So for Smith and Curry the prospects of going 1 overall should be a bonus. If the Lions were truly sold on Matt Stafford then they will take him regardless of the Money and this is exactly what Mel was talkin about. The Lions should have Known a few weeks ago whether or not Stafford is their guy. Any hesitence or intrigue by any other player other than Snachez means they are not 100% confident in Stafford. Lets say Stafford is their man but, Curry and Smith come to terms before Sat. and Stafford does not. Does this mean the Lions wont draft Stafford? I don’t think Curry or Smith are fearful of falling to where they were projected to go in the first place. Rams want to trade out of the number 2 spot plain and simple. Point is if Curry, Smith, Stafford were smart they wouldnt sign before the draft because at that point they hold the Cards which is the reason why a team wants to get a deal in place before the draft for fear of them holding out. If a team wants you they will take you

joemommascallin thank you for suggesting Florio send me a copy of his book, but if he doesnt, dont worry, I’m NOT gonna buy it either (http://www.amazon.com/Quarterback-Future-Mike-Florio/dp/1587360292/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240418456&sr=8-1)

Campbell blows. Zorn knows it and has convinced Danny. Damn Todd Collins should have started after his nice run to the playoffs in ’07. Sh!t, they couldn’t even get a trade with Denver cause Campbell is so pathetic. His mechanics are hideous and he’ll be average and streaky at best.
How is his confidence now that the Skins are again looking at a QB????

  29. Qenn says: Apr 22, 2009 1:06 PM

As a Rams Fan (who has been embarrassed by not only the team but by the way the franchise has been ran), I agree with zertrat- “The management of the Rams this year is all new. No more Zygmunt, Linehan, Haslet. Now, this does not mean the new Rams will be smart, it simply means you cannot assume they will continue to be stupid, because the proven stupid people are gone.” With Coach Steve Spagnuolo being from the coaching tree of Andy Reid and Tom Coughlin, I hope that we see less bluffing and more of a commitment to improvement of talent on the whole team instead of a few stars.

  30. Ramsfan39 says: Apr 22, 2009 6:44 PM

    I’ll be honest…
I’m a Rams fan. (yeah it hurts me too)
But I’m not the kind of fan that will run across busy traffic in LA to argue with Florio about the Rams not being pretty unimpressive for the past few years. I feel that the team is on the rise with the new coach in Spags and the new GM in Devaney (who gets too little credit for bringing the unheralded WR Avery to us in the second round last year, first WR taken and totally unheard of) and I really feel we finally have a reason to poke our heads out from our caves and view the football world outside for the first time in a long time. Of course, once my head is exposed I am constantly scowering the pages on this website and see Florio endlessly beating the dead horse that is my football team. It’s obvious Florio has a man-crush on Pat White and everything WVM and that he thinks Jesus will return in a purple helmet talking on a Sprint phone, but I’m okay with that. I mean, his team took the Rams’ leftover QB and let him start over the guy they OVERDRAFTED a few years ago to be their poorer version of Mike Vick. I mean, if my team took a player from a 2-14 team who was not good enough to start without injury to Marc “the Boy in the Plastic Bubble” Bulger, I guess I’d have my Twittering panties in a bunch too. His team overdrafted on a QB who only flourished after being benched in his 3rd year or so, and let Frerotte the goal-line fumbling man of glass take the reins like that was a serious approach. Then, after Frerotte became impressive, they kept him on the bench in favor of the streakish Tarvaris Jackson and lost his team the playoffs.
I like Florio’s humor, but I think he needs some counselling for some issues the Rams obviously have caused him… Does Florio Jr call Steven Jackson “Daddy” or something? Whats the deal?

Whaaaaat?!? The Skins are considering trading all of their draft picks to get Sanchez? I thought they were planning on using those picks to acquire such hot commodities as Irving Fryar, Yancey Thigpen, and Rod Tidwell!
