Texas Tech Coach Rips Mangini

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach didn’t take kindly to those rumors about star wide receiver Michael Crabtree supposedly acting like a diva during his official visit with the Cleveland Browns, blaming Browns coach Eric Mangini as the source behind a leak that may have damaged Crabtree’s draft stock as much as his minor foot surgery.
Crabtree wound up being picked by the San Francisco 49ers after being originally projected as high as the Browns’ fifth overall pick.
As for Mangini, he might not find himself too welcome on the Texas Tech campus in the future, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
“Michael Crabtree has been more successful as a receiver than that guy as a coach at this point,” Leach said of Mangini. “Part of the reason is he’s (Crabtree) too shy to be like that. …
“My definition of a diva is someone who’s loud and self-absorbed. Michael Crabtree is the furthest thing from loud that I’ve seen. … Let’s see how all those non-divas do up in Cleveland this year.”
Ouch. I guess Mangini and Leach won’t be hanging out in the Flats together anytime soon.

sounds like a professional coach. He’s a diva too.

  2. Roachk1lla says: Apr 25, 2009 8:38 PM

wow this just makes Leach more likable IMO. Mangini and all those other Belicheat disciples think they are great and they havent done anything. They all fail outside of the Patriots.

  3. Unsterblich856 says: Apr 25, 2009 8:40 PM

    That’s my wide receiver ;_;

  4. 3074326 says: Apr 25, 2009 8:41 PM

How does Leach even know if Mangini was the source?
An analyst from ESPN said he saw the same thing, I believe. I think it was reported here on PFT? Could be wrong. Either way, Leach sounds like the diva here.

  5. jheard19 says: Apr 25, 2009 8:42 PM

they are making crabtree worse than what he is. mangini is an idiot anyway for wanting to trade edwards for no reason.

  6. Zinn says: Apr 25, 2009 8:46 PM

Mangini is about as unprofessional as a coach can be. So ironic that a guy who preaches character for his players has such a long list of personal character problems.

  7. dragon2o00 says: Apr 25, 2009 8:47 PM

wow, sounds like someone was bragging his wr would be a top 5 pick and dropped to…hayward-bey?? be bitter all you want leach, but everyone in the nfl thinks crab is a diva. deal with it.

  8. JoeSixPack says: Apr 25, 2009 8:49 PM

Add Leach to a long and growing line of those in the NFL who have no respect for Mangini

  9. Ralph GreNader says: Apr 25, 2009 8:49 PM

Hey fatty we know we suck now piss off.

  10. savocabol1 says: Apr 25, 2009 8:49 PM

mangini is in the pros and this guy was about to be fired from his university. how does he think he has room to talk. Texas Tech will be lucky if they win 4 games next year.

  11. superius says: Apr 25, 2009 8:51 PM

Notice that he said divas are both (a) loud and (b) self-absorbed. Then notice the very next sentence said that Crabtree is the furthest thing from loud that he’s seen. WHAT about self-absorbed? Apparently he is self-absorbed but it’s alright because he isn’t loud. In my mind being self-absorbed is far more of a problem than being loud.

  12. mikeyhigs says: Apr 25, 2009 8:51 PM

Does Mike each realy believe that an NFL GM took Crabtree off his board because of something Eric Mangini said?!

  13. Beave says: Apr 25, 2009 8:54 PM

Nice to see a college coach tell it like it is rather than fawn over the NFL guys in hopes of paving a way to the pros. Haven’t all of the coaches from the Belichek coaching tree have been flops? Yet they share one huge character flaw with BB… They’re massive egomaniacs who think the sun revolves around their arse.
Cleveland IMO passed Detroit for the worst run team in the NFL this offseason when they hired a re-tread coach and then stacked the front office with guys who wouldn’t threaten the power of the stooges already in place.
The sad thing is, I have a feeling Cleveland knew they were probably going to end up in a trade down situation and were trying to crap on Crabtree in hopes they’d still be able to get him.

  14. deanezag says: Apr 25, 2009 8:54 PM

    1. He doesnt have proof it was Magnini
    2. Crabtree has proved nothing as a NFL WR yet
    3. Leach is in the NCAA playing fake offense
    4. Way to increase your NFL-NCAA coach connection when you’re recuiting high school kids.

and mike leach has done…… what again?

  16. DolphinsAO says: Apr 25, 2009 9:04 PM

Michael Crabtree is the man. Clevland said first that he was a great kid great football player blah blah blah then the next day it was like O michael Crab Tree is a punk. Clevland Sucks

  17. Doc Hock says: Apr 25, 2009 9:11 PM

Yeah I thought that was hilarious. Like everyone listens to what anyone in the Browns organization would say, especially this time of year. His injury and bragging was more the reason for his drop in the draft. He can add that he knows he is a top 5 pick along with his outrageous 40 times!

  18. kirbysfriend says: Apr 25, 2009 9:17 PM

seriously, i’m not a big mangini fan but who cares what this d-bag says? what’s he ever done? he’s just sad he didn’t get his first ever top 5 pick. plus, there were multiple sources who described crabtree as a giant vergina face.

  19. JimmySmith says: Apr 25, 2009 9:19 PM

Leach didn’t do himself in favors by opening his mouth and trying to bait Fatso Mangini into a mud slinging contest. Now, if it were a pie eating contest. Mangini would gladly engage.
Let’s see Leach beat Texas two years in a row before he crown him anything special.

  20. philwauke says: Apr 25, 2009 9:20 PM

Hey Leach… Ole Miss just scored again. suck it.

  21. Roachk1lla says: Apr 25, 2009 9:22 PM

Mike Leach has done more than mangini. Leach was not gonna be fired he was gonna leave for a better job and stayed. He runs one of the best offense in the country. I say what has Eric Mangini done? Besides ride the coat tails of Beli-Cheat.

  22. realityonetwo says: Apr 25, 2009 9:23 PM

Pfffttt. Nobody hangs out in the Flats anymore. When’s the last time you’ve been to Cleveland? 1989?

  23. csloan99 says: Apr 25, 2009 9:26 PM

“As for Mangini, he might not find himself too welcome on the Texas Tech campus in the future, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.”
Oh no! He can never go to the paradise craphole that is Lubbock, Texas. Biggest loss of the day!

  24. Quaffetti says: Apr 25, 2009 9:29 PM

Why didn’t the coach come out with this before the draft?

  25. vegas42 says: Apr 25, 2009 9:42 PM

Dyke fight! (with apologies to south park)

  26. Wrathchild says: Apr 25, 2009 9:58 PM

Oh damn, that was nice. Mangina is a douche anyway.

  27. ThEmADmAN says: Apr 25, 2009 10:00 PM

apparently u only have made up rumors to report florio….tx for all the current draft information as always…maybe we can have some more info on vick so we have nothing to read until the regular season

  28. leatherneck says: Apr 25, 2009 10:06 PM

    Good on Leach.
Time will tell if Mangini made nice decisions on draft day. But leaking bull about Crabtree was not only unnecessary, it was classless.
Crabtree is a good guy, and is going to make a great pro. The 49ers made a great pick.

  29. Ford says: Apr 25, 2009 10:14 PM

All it takes is one tantrum for Mangini to be proven right. I expect that to happen by August.

  30. DynastyDriven77 says: Apr 25, 2009 10:16 PM

Mangina is a ratfaced gutless puke, why is anyone surprised? He is as two faced and slimy as anyone in pro sports these days.

  31. caleb22 says: Apr 25, 2009 10:30 PM

Good for him. Manginius is a terd.

  32. oreoboy3 says: Apr 25, 2009 10:30 PM

It may have been leaked out of Cleveland, but other teams were head nodding in agreement after the story came out. Mike Leach can suck on it. When EVERYONE passes on your guy once, it’s not because of what one team MIGHT have said. He’s just mad because his claim to fame won’t be a first rounder that he can tout to kids on recruiting trips.

  33. losoldato says: Apr 25, 2009 10:56 PM

“wow this just makes Leach more likable IMO. Mangini and all those other Belicheat disciples think they are great and they havent done anything. They all fail outside of the Patriots.”
Didn’t Mangini have 2 out of 3 winning seasons in NY? Doesn’t make him Paul Brown, but it isn’t what I would calling failing.
“Add Leach to a long and growing line of those in the NFL who have no respect for Mangini”
Leach isn’t in the NFL. Who else is in that “long and growing” line?

  34. txtchjmb says: Apr 25, 2009 11:03 PM

savocabol1 just win 4 games this year. You are full of BS man. Tech won’t win 11 this year like they did in 08 but more than 4. You obviously no nothing about Texas Tech or college football so keep your keep your opinion to yourself. Wreck em Tech!!

  35. daBRONZE says: Apr 25, 2009 11:28 PM

Crabtree is a diva. Falling to 10 made him sick, why? because he knew he lost millions of dollars. I even heard a few people on the 49ers coaching staff didn’t even want him, this was a management pick to sell tickets. I loved it when he was on the NFL network and they asked him if he was a diva and he said NO than he went on to talk about he didn’t know what suit he wanted to wear to the draft, lol. Good luck San Fran…
Browns are turning things around they don’t want players like this on their team.

  36. CTifer says: Apr 25, 2009 11:32 PM

Exactly. Mangini took Herm’s scraps and went 10-6 and made the playoffs in year one. He lost his QB his 2nd year to injury, and had a new fresh O-Line that need to work together and went 4-12. Then they get rid of Chad (dumb move) and bring in Brett and go 9-7 after being 8-3 in week 12. Brett broke down but refused to tell anyone about it and cost them 4 out of the last 5 games. Thats not Mangini’s fault. Tannenbaum brought in Brett, Woody wanted Brett, so Manigini can’t exactly bench the guy that the GM and the owner want. Mangini didn’t even want Brett Favre.

savocabol1 4 wins is all this year for tech?? I dont’ think so. You know nothing about tech football

  40. bobinpr says: Apr 26, 2009 12:27 AM

Isn’t Leach the one who had a fit when reporters were critical about one of his players last year, saying something like blame me, I’m a man, I’m forty years old, blah, blah, blah. Poor little baby, your player got drafted lower than expected and now may only earn $10 – $ 20 million during the next few years. Perhaps the tens of millions of ordinary people who have lost their jobs should take up a collection for him, I’m sure they will be very simpathetic to your player’s situation.

  41. mneezy1 says: Apr 26, 2009 12:48 AM

Good question, Losoldato. Who else besides Belichick?

  42. DavidInTexas says: Apr 26, 2009 1:03 AM

Anyone who has ever played for Mike Leach will tell you that he is a first-class asshole. Got his name in the PFT blog, though.
Keep feeding the flames, Florio. Your dislike for anything Cleveland keeps falling out of your skirt for everyone to see…

Well, Tinyman Florio, the site didn’t crash but it did take 3 clicks to get here. BUY THE EQUIPMENT, MAN! YOU’RE LIKE A BAR WITHOUT GLASSES…OR BOOZE.
As for Coach Leach: waaaaah, waaaaaah, waaaaaah. There are bigger problems in the world. Even in this “world”. Eric Crabtree will be ok.

  45. norcaldiscgolf1 says: Apr 26, 2009 2:30 AM

    does anyone actually like Mangini?
The browns FO might now, but wait a year or two and see if that changes… and if he gets a job after that

  46. dave61 says: Apr 26, 2009 7:06 AM

Leach needs to shut his pie hole and watch the Espn interviews where Crabtree came across as an assssss……….. didn’t want him on my team……………….diva, dumb and arrogant……..and seems like the coach sucks too

  47. LuvThatDirtyWatah says: Apr 26, 2009 7:31 AM

There goes Mangini….making more friends. What an embarrassment he is to the NFL. Cleveland, Lerner, and Mangini all deserve each other. It’s going to fun watching that “dabacle”.

  48. Mike Beckwith says: Apr 26, 2009 9:17 AM

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh… my receiver is a prima donna and it’s somebody else’s fault. Waaaaaaaaaaaahhh…
So is it also Mangini’s fault that the ESPN people also had the same to say of Crabtree this week when he displayed the same attitude at Bristol?

  49. EskinSux says: Apr 26, 2009 9:20 AM

@bobinpr……That was Oklahoma State’s coach, Mike Gundy who had that funny as shit meltdown….Not Mike Leach

  50. Mistress Rachael says: Apr 26, 2009 2:54 PM

Nice to see a peer calling out mangini for what he is…a fraud.
Cleveland has a great, loyal, knowledgable fan base….too bad their owner is an idiot. Hiring Mangini will ruin them for years…..not to mention he’s a dirty rat…filthy

  51. TheCoop says: Apr 27, 2009 7:08 PM

Mike Leach shouldn’t be so salty, I’m sure Texas Tech had a bunch of early round defensive players taken.
