Wisely or not, the Minnesota Vikings proved that they’re not averse to risk by rolling the dice on University of Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin in the first round with the 22nd overall pick.
Harvin tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine, had a history of clashing with Gators coach Urban Meyer and teammates, and has durability concerns.
Nonetheless, an NFL source told us that Harvin is, “The best skill athlete in this draft, hands down. He has unbelievable talent.”
And that same source told us something that might give the Vikings pause.
“They’re glad that Harvin is gone at Florida,” the source told us. “He wore out his welcome down there, but they’ll be the first people to tell you that the guy can flat-out play.
“I’ve seen worse character guys come in this league and stay out of trouble, so it’s hard to say what will happen with him. You just cross your fingers and hope for the best.”
As pointed out by Don Banks of SI.com, former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards delivered the best line of the weekend while discussing the risk factor involved with Harvin during an ESPN appearance.
“This guy is one of those guys, whether he’s driving a Ferrari, a Cadillac, a Volkswagen, if he even goes to Disneyland and drives the little cars that run on the rail, he’s going to have a wreck,” Edwards said. “So, you better have a good body and fender man. . . . There’s going to be some things you have to deal with, and you know that.”
Buyer Beware on Harvin?

I also thought Edwards made a great point about Heyward-Bay who I thought was a reach. He’s just gonna run go routes and have Jmarc heave them up to him. And yes, he might drop a few, but they’ll also probably connect on a few or at least draw a PI call.
Florio, you are a Viking-hater. This is really ridiculous. The guy hasn’t even flown in for training camp. There is no new information in this story. It’s just a hit job to try to run a good coach out of the Vikings.
Childress is a great coach. The Vikings got the best talent available in the draft at pick #22, and we are going to stomp all over your favorite teams this year. We are rollin’. Look out, NFL. The Vikings are in business.
I can’t wait for an entire year of anti-Vikings tirades here as the Vikings tear up the NFL.
I think Harvin will be fine. He made some mistakes, but he still a young man. Now that he is in the NFL and playing with great veteran leaders, he will be fine. I know a guy on the Vikings roster that had character issues that turned out to be perfect. (Jared Allen)
Sounds like a perfect fit for the Vikings.
Everyone knew the whole “Zygi/Childress code of conduct” after the Love Boat was just a big sham to do PR damage control. Why does it seem like the Vikings always act from a position of desperation? No pass rush? Let’s give up the farm for a drunk who’s one issue away from a year suspension AND make him the highest paid DE in the game. Crappy receivers? Let’s go out and sign a guy who’s never had 1000 yd season and make him the 4th highest paid receiver in the game. Still no receiving threat? Let’s go gamble on a turd like Harvin and hope we can babysit him and keep him out of trouble.
If there’s one thing the Vikings should realize by now, it’s that they are not good at keeping guys out of trouble through babysitting.
leatherneck, LOL!!!!!! You must be about 12…..
David Palmer all over again.
I hope he realizes the opportunity he has
Florio, can you provide some links for the clashes at Florida? I’ve heard about his highschool stuff and obviously the combine issue, but from what I’ve read he had a fairly smooth time at Florida (aside from the migraines which you mutated into a bad case of cottonmouth?).
hey herm… WAT?!
I guarantee you the leadership in that locker room will keep harvin in place
So does Herm Edwards get a copy of QB of the Future???
i would have traded the pick for edwards or boldin.
I think they are saying the whole time he was at Florida, he was consistently young and making mistakes, showing no indications of having learned anything from them. Childress said he has a great smile though.
Pothead.
Mike Mayock said that this is the quickest football player he has ever seen in person. Coming from him that is saying something. Trust me, he is not just another Florida receiver, he is really REALLY good. Hopefully he can keep his nose clean. Between him and Adrian Peterson..Holy crap..You got the Bears with Cutler, and the Packers with all their receivers, that NFC North is looking pretty gd gnarly
At least the next Love Boat excursion on Lake Minnetonka will have a new driver. He can supply the wacky weed, out of state hookers and serve as a look out for McKinney so he can enjoy his lunch at the Y.
Childress fancies himself a genius for this pick but he forgot one thing, who is going to throw him the ball? Chances are Childress doesn’t last beyond the season so the long term risks associated with this pick didn’t even enter his mind. (along with a lot of football knowledge which also never entered his head) Don’t forget that since he tested positive at the combine, he comes into the League at level 1 so one more transgression and he will be suspended. (same as the $70 million man if he should start drinking again, or more accurately, when he starts drinking again)
On a side but related note, the meter maids of downtown Minneapolis have filed a formal complaint requesting combat pay for patrolling the streets when Harvin is in town.
He reminds me of another Minnesota WR taken that had character issues…Who was that? Oh yeah, Randy Moss. Yes Moss had his controversy, but look at him now. The most dominant receiver that the league has had with the exception of Jerry Rice. Harvin will be a good fit with that team. AD, BB, and Bobby Wade will have to step up and lead this kid.
Herm is the king of NFL quotes.

============================
LOL Yeah, the rest of the NFL will be “tearing up” laughing at the Viqueens.
Let me ask you this; is there anyone reading this that believes that Randy Moss wasn’t smoking pot when he was playing college ball? The difference is, he didn’t get caught. Randy turned out to be a good pick and I think history repeats itself here as the talented Mr. Harvin turns out to be a field tilter.

Wait wait wait – You are actually going to call Childress a great coach? Wake up man! That man has single handedly brought our organization to it’s knees and has completely underachieved since day 1! Remember when we used to sell out every game? Now remember us lucking out, I repeat lucking out and making the playoffs and having a hard time selling tickets?
News flash – It isn’t the economy, but rather the coach.
Best playmaker in this draft; however, he’s a nightmare off the field. I have friends close to the Florida program, and this guy is crazy. You have no idea how much shit they covered up over the past couple of years for this guy in Gainesville.
That being said, the Gators don’t win those national titles without him, even more so than Tebo. He’s that good. A lot of anger problems, me attitude, etc. he’s the ultimate me guy.
JuicyMelon says “He reminds me of another Minnesota WR taken that had character issues…Who was that? Oh yeah, Randy Moss. Yes Moss had his controversy, but look at him now.”
Yeah, and Moss was such a high character guy that instead of having him live his career and go down in Viking lore, they had to trade him for nothing because he wore out his act in Minnesota and became a cancer in the locker room. Think before you type and for God’s sake use your MELON!
ya commentate to keep yer job.
Oakland Raiders Midwest…
With a name like Percy, you have to be a badass or get your weakass kicked constantly.
leatherneck: Childress is a great coach in the same sense that Matt Millen is a great GM. Guy is a joke, he’s from the Herm Edwards, Art Shell, Andy Reid school of clock mismanagement. He can’t even effectively use the best RB in the NFL at times.
frankly, Idolized1 it has always been my opinion that the Vikings biggest weakness is their Minnesota fans.
And your example dovetails nicely with that.
Love the Vikes, but think they have to leave Minnesota to find a place with decent, non-crybaby fans. When half your fans don’t buy the playoff tickets, time to leave town. Heck, Sioux Falls or Fargo would be a better place to sell games out than the self-satisfied Twin Cities.
Could we get some links to articles about all the off the field issues?

Why don’t you use your melon? Moss didn’t wear out his welcome in Minnesota, he was the casualty of a dumb ass owner (Red McCombs) who wanted to unload the team and thus figured to slash payroll because he is a cheap ass..
Zygi Wilf has already stated a few times that he didn’t want Moss traded before he took the team over, and would love to have Moss on this team.. The only fault of Moss was that he wanted the ball because he was and is a great WR.. What is wrong with that? We all saw how Culpepper did without Moss, so the proof is in the writing..
Percy Harvin will be a perfect fit for the Vikings, because now we have 3 home run threats on this team.. I can’t wait to see opposing defense get burned by Peterson, Berrian, and now Harvin.. The only ones laughing at the end of this season will be Vikings fans..
You can be a consistent 8-8 team in the NFL and never take chances on character issue guys, but to win championshops you have to gamble that 21 and 22 year olds will grow up. Some do and some don’t.
But Harvin was the #1 high school player in the country and went on to be a major factor in two national championship teams at Florida.
On talent alone (besides catching the ball, the dude ran the ball 70 times last year and scored 10 TDs and averaged 11 yards a carry against some of the best defenses in college football so he’s a threat to score every time he gets the football), he’s one of the best players in the draft, For the Vikings who need a few more big plays on offense and someone defenses need to key on to take some attention awat from Adrian Peterson, Harvin was hands-down the best player available to improve the Vikings.
As far as the Vikings QB, too many people are mistaken when they assume he’s a traditional WR who needs a traditional QB. Harvin won’t be running many 15 yard outs and catching the ball over the middle much. That’s not what he’s being brought in for. He’ll be used on bubble screens, quick slants, reverses, etc. just to get him the ball in the open field. Those are the kind of plays that don’t require a Pro Bowl QB to get him the ball.
In fact, he’s probably a better fit at WR than Michael Crabtree would have been, because Crabtree is the traditional type of WR whose production will depend on the quality of QB who can get him the ball.
1. Childress might be the worst coach in the NFL.
2. Did you really just compare Harvin to Moss? Moss is the prototypical #1 WR. I’m not even sure Harvin is a WR. I saw him take just as many handoffs as passes he caught. Go watch some highlights of Harvin and what you will see is that all of his highlights plays are screens, handoffs, reverses, and drag routes. That’s all great. he’s dynamic with the ball, but hes not a #1 WR, probably never will be.
VikesfaninWI, Get a clue! You have no idea what you what you’re talking about obviously. It had nothing to do with McCombs and everything to do with Moss wearing out his welcome in Minnesota.
“The flamboyant Moss had been the subject of trade rumors following this past season. He struggled with a hamstring injury but still finished with 13 touchdown catches. He was fined $10,000 for pretending to pull down his pants and moon the Green Bay crowd during Minnesota’s playoff win. He also drew criticism for leaving the field with two seconds left in a regular-season loss against Washington.
Team leaders Matt Birk and Daunte Culpepper confronted Moss after he walked off at Washington, and the organization’s patience with the receiver seemed to dwindle in the past year or so.
“He’s my good friend, but you almost get to thinking that maybe enough is enough,” Culpepper said earlier this month at the Pro Bowl. “And maybe the Vikings organization has had enough.”
“Money had nothing to do with it,” McCombs said. “The reason I traded him was because Randy had kind of lost his place in the locker room. He kind of lost his place with our other leaders on the team. As an owner of a sports team, when you sense that you got a player who loses his place in the locker room, regardless of what kind of talent he’s got, you have to make a move. I made a move.”
Now we know why they let Matt “Meormoss” Birk walk.
The most significant point I have not seen printed as yet.
Since Harvin tested postivie during the combine, he is already at phase one of the NFL substance abuse policy.
He will be tested again early and often. Since he already was stupid enough to test positive when he knew the test was coming, it is not a matter of if, but when he tests positive again.
And of course, the Vikings can look forward to a looming Harvin suspension.
Whatever happened to the days when a player coming out of college had to earn a spot, work for a rep, and do it on a minimum salary with MAYBE a small signing bonus? ESPN, Mel Kiper, the whole culture of pro football is upside down, not unlike this country as a whole. What KID deserves millions of dollars to play a game? Better yet, when will we get a commish and/or Congress for that matter that will look into the way college and pro teams are operating. Much is borderline legal and very little is ethical. Thats before the criminal element and gambling issues.
So what does Goodell do? Lets take it to other countries and sell, sell, sell!
Admittedly risky pick, we’ll see if it pays off. If he was such a pain in the ass in Florida, none of the Florida coaches quoted in the paper today said anything to that effect, and I couldn’t find reported instances of problems in college (other than the dope smoking pot before the combine). Reports also stated at least 2 teams were trying to trade up and get the guy, and that the other NFC rivals were bummed he went to the Vikes. So others apparently think he was worth the risk, as was Moss and as is Allen.
The real question is whether Klink will be creative enough to properly use him.
Hey, at least the Vikes didn’t draft a lard-ass from BC that has a reportedly lousy work ethic, and another slow long-haired reputation-only LB to miss plays along side AJ Hawk. However, McCarthy will have someone to take with him to his Jenny Craig meetings, and AJ Hawk will have a pal to help to braid his hair.
jrhsd: frankly, Idolized1 it has always been my opinion that the Vikings biggest weakness is their Minnesota fans.

Look, don’t start with that “It’s the fans fault” excuse that a minority of people like to use. The Minnesota fans have every right to feel used and abused. Kevin Garnett, Randy Moss, Johan Santana, etc… Those guys ring a bell?
People are not not buying tickets because they dislike the Vikings or want to see them move, but rather because they know how talented and flat-out amazing our team is and they are tired of seeing it being mis-managed. It is obvious that Childress just doesn’t have what it takes. His QB decision set us back a long, long time. We barely beat the Detroit Lions – Twice. The worst team in the history of the NFL we needed a bogus PI call to beat. I’m not ashamed to say it, but the truth hurts sometimes.
People want results. This is the business of winning, and regardless of what a poster or two says on a message board, one thing is clear – The fans are not happy at all with Brad Childress. That is why people are not buying tickets.
Typical BiQueen fan response. Last year when they signed the redneck cowboy drunk, the proclamations from the fans of “we are going to the Superbowl” were deafening. Forget the previous year that they finished dead last in pass defense, Allen was going to be the savior because the QB wouldn’t have time to throw. Well, Allen did have an effect because the Vikings only finished 22nd, an improvement alright.
After throwing $44 million at a WR who couldn’t crack 50 receptions on the season, the brain trust (a liberal description) of the Vikings are desperate to show some improvement so instead of trading for Cutler (who the Vikings weren’t sure of, mind you, this is the same group that thought T Jack Off was a real QB), they draft a pot smoking thug who has a history of violence and respecting authority. A perfect fit for an idiot coach who didn’t have a clue with his current cast, now he is going to figure it all out.
If you believe all that, you are smoking some good stuff and should immediately contact Harvin to share your stash and your dealer’s cell phone #.

They traded him because Reddy decided to bust the team up. He was traded for N. Harris and the Raiders first pick and 7th pick the next year. (Those ended up not working, but let’s just say it could’ve).
He wasn’t a cancer in the locker room and you won’t be able to find anything that says he was. Yes the players got mad when he walked off the field, but Matty B stated the next day that they talked and it was done. I don’t consider that a cancer.
Next time you decide to call me out, how about doing some actual research and not try to shove your opinion down everyone elses throat. Did you even look at film, numbers, or anything about Harvin? Or did you just read a couple PFT posts, listen to some Mel Kipper jibberish, and call it a day?
well I’m pleased, we won the division just last year.
I don’t know why our coach needs to be fired because you can’t understand that and are a bad fan?
You think you are trying to prove a point. You are. The fans in Minnesota aren’t good enough fans to sell out a playoff game.
They don’t care about the record, apparently they want a return to the Denny Green days of all offense and no defense.
Harvin hands down is the riskiest draft pick in the first round. Why would anyone deny that shit?
In a related story, the best team in the NFC North in 2008 is still the best team in the NFC North.
Nothing has changed since mid-January.
The other three teams in the NFC North will all spend the 2009 season the same way they spent the 2008 season. . .looking up at the Minnesota Vikings.

How about you go do some fact checking before throwing around shit. The Vikes finished 16th against the pass last season. It’s not incredible, but it’s quite a leap up from 32. I think I sensed some envy in your post there. Are you upset Allen forced Rodgers into that safety still?
And in regards to Harvin and the QB situation, I want to direct you to bgman’s post. This is a WR that the QB just needs to throw a simple 5 yard pass to. I’m pretty sure Jackson can do that. Harvin can take care of the rest.
Oh, and I doubt that Jared Allen will turn back to alochol. He’s been clean for at least a couple years now, and he doesn’t play for the Packers, so there’s really no reason for a relapse.
I was going to post something about Harvin, but the smack in some of these posts is so entertaining I’m just going to say thank you. As a Raider fan I always get the same tired Al Davis cryptkeeper cracks, followed by illegible posts from wannabe thugs. These hair-braiding, drunk cowboy posts are hilarious.
NFL receivers with “character” issues…….
Terrell Owens, Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, Braylon Edwards, Randy Moss, Anquan Bolden………
All of the people on here criticizing the Vikings pick of Percy Havin are worthless hypocrits if they have ever drafted any one of these forementioned players in fantasy football.
I’m assuming most of the banter is coming from toothless Wisconsinites anyways, so keep talking 6-10……

“Typical BiQueen fan response. Last year when they signed the redneck cowboy drunk, the proclamations from the fans of “we are going to the Superbowl” were deafening. Yeah. . .because if anyone has the right to tell another team how crappy their defense is, it’s Packer fan. Are the Saints still scoring on you guys?
Anyway, in terms of pass yardage allowed, the Packers. . .with their great and mighty secondary. . .were 12th in the NFL. The “terrible” Viking pass defense was 16th. The difference was about one first down per game. I suppose you could conveniently ignore the fact that the Vikings had nearly double the sacks of the Packers. . .you know, if you were stupid.
Of course, if you look at rush defense, the Vikings were the best in the NFL against the run. . .as per usual. . .while the Packers were absolutely putrid, allowing a full 55 yards/game more than the Vikings’ defense did. That’s why the Vikings were #6 in total defense in the NFL in 2008, while the Packers were waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down at #20.
We could even throw in minor things like the fact that the Vikings’ defense allowed 25 TDs in 2008 (10 rushing, 15 passing). The Packers’ great, wonderful, outstanding defense allowed 42 (20 rushing, 22 passing).
So, obviously the answer to this for the Packers is to hire an idiot, past his prime defensive coordinator, change to a scheme that will take the only player in your defensive front 7 that’s worth a crap and puts him totally out of position, and draft a fat tub of goo with a pathetic work ethic to anchor your defense. Oh, he’s an anchor, alright. . .he’ll sink just like the rest of the Packers in 2009.
Honestly, you’d have to be a real idiot to suggest that Jared Allen had no impact on Minnesota’s defense. . .which is probably why a Packer fan is suggesting that Jared Allen had no impact on Minnesota’s defense.
It’s great that Packer fans are entitled to their own opinion. . .the problem is that so many of them think they’re entitled to their own facts, too.
The Vikings could have drafted the second coming of Jerry Rice, the fact remains that they still need somebody to consistently get the ball to the receivers.
I dont like the Percy Harvin pick, because I think anyone failing a drug test right before the draft when they know that theyre going to be tested basically shows a “I will do whatever I want who gives a F” mentality. The guy has talent and no one denys that but there were other solid receivers on the board who didn’t have major character concerns like Harvin
A risky pick indeed…wish they hadn’t have gone this way.
I’m guessing they’ll regret it…
People on this board, should never expect JImmySmith to back up his arguments with real facts, or have anything except an anti-Viking opinion.
I imagine he had his crayons out writing yesterday something like:
is the worst ever. He can’t play, he had off the field issues, he’s injury prone, he’s me-first, he doesn’t call his Mom on the Mother’s Day.
All Jimmy needed was a name to fill in the blank.
And by now everyone should know how much better the Packers are — finishing 4 games behind the Vikings last year should have left no doubt.
JimmySmith, im a vikings fan, but your posts are usually spot on and make me laugh, just an FYI on 2 things:
Jared Allen is outta the substance abuse program.
http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/29722184.html?elr=KArks5PhDcU9PhDcU9PhDcUU
Bernard Berrian has been our best receiver since Randy Moss; BB putting up 964yrd 8TD (1 punt return) is pretty solid considering who’s throwing him the football.
@ The Gonz:
Hear, Hear. Good post.
Harvin is going to work out just fine… The extra attention showed by the Front Office up front was done to make sure they didn’t blow the pick, and I believe everybody is on the same page there.
To top it off… the Vikings draft giant Loadholt to be a brutal run blocking RT… Adrian Peterson is going to wreck house this year!
Great first day for the Vikings. Rosenfels is gonna win the starting job and he’ll be able to utilize all the weapons at his disposal… Harvin’s going to be offensive R.O.Y., just like another Viking was two years ago.
Urban swept most of Percys prolems under the rug claiming muscle tweaks and migraines. Too bad espn doesnt look at the Gators off the field issues as closely as Alabama, FSU, UCONN basketball, USC ala Reggie Bush. Percy is one of the best athletes to come out of college in recent years but if you cant smoke for at least 20 days before your getting tested good luck beating the NFL especially after your red flagged.
While leatherneck may be a little too blindly optimistic about the Vikings and their less than dynamic head coach – I’m a Vikings fan, btw – I agree with him about there being no new information here.
Where’s the news hook to this post? This is just a regurgitation of the same stuff that has been said numerous times. When I read the headline, I thought maybe he had another run in with the law or some other trouble. Given his past, that isn’t exactly implausible.
I don’t think this site, which I enjoy, is decidedly biased against the Vikings, but its authors tend to find certain points of criticism against the Vikes and beat them to death (Allen supposedly trying to injure Schaub, AP not getting penalized for taking his helmet off after game winning td vs. Pack, now Harvin, etc.) with post after post.
I expect to read many more posts pondering why the Vikings took this “troubled wideout from Florida.”
“And you can’t even use the proper “you’re” in your sentences. ”
