Titans To Sign Mort's Kid

Though we didn’t see it, several readers tell us that an awkward exchange unfolded on Sunday between ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr. and Chris Mortensen, regarding Mort Jr.
As we hear it, Kiper was asked to assess the pro prospects of quarterback Alex Mortensen (hey, same first name as Florio, Jr. . . . and no one cares).  Kiper basically said that the younger Mortensen should get into coaching.  The elder Mort was, we’re told, shocked by the candor.
Apparently, the Titans disagree with Kiper.
According to Terry McCormick of the Nashville City Paper, the Titans have inked quarterback Alex Mortensen as an undrafted free agent.
Meanwhile, no team has ever asked Kiper to do anything other than shut up.

Can the Titans be trying to buy Mort’s favor a little bit?

  2. Robopunter says: Apr 27, 2009 11:25 AM

I saw the exchange. It wasn’t that awkward, really. Kiper was just trying to say something nice about Mort’s kid (a marginal prospect, at best), and Mort clearly just wasn’t comfortable talking about it at all. The awkwardness wasn’t related to what Kiper was saying, but to the situation in general.

  3. jimicos says: Apr 27, 2009 11:26 AM

At least Kiper didn’t say he should start bagging groceries.
I like Kiper’s candor. It’s his know-it-all attitude and overwhelmingly douchey personality I could do without. Imagine being related and having to see that guy at family get-togethers every year. Holy hell, I’d avoid him like the plague. Or maybe I’d pimp him for his views and make him self-conscious by staring at his hair helmet the entire time.
How funny would it be to slip a little Nair into his hat in late March? Maybe just a stripe down the middle..

Kiper is one of if not the reason I was happier watching the draft on the NFL Network. What a putz!

  5. TCLARK says: Apr 27, 2009 11:28 AM

    Kiper is Myocs Bitch.

    Florio – zingggggggggggg.

  7. Ralph GreNader says: Apr 27, 2009 11:37 AM

Is Alex a fat know-it-all too?

  8. Sir Loin of Hoboken says: Apr 27, 2009 11:40 AM

I saw it and I disagree that it wasn’t awkward. It was completely awkward. Yeah, Kiper was trying to say something nice, but the kid is trying to play football, not coach one day. Young football players don’t grow up wanting to stand on a sideline, they want to play. Yes, becoming an NFL coach in the future is an honor to say the least, but could it be more obvious for the panel? They are sitting there after watching two days of the draft, seeing dreams come true hundreds of times, and Kiper forgets that this kid wants to PLAY football. Retard.

Mort Jr. is the next Montana
Florio Jr. and his band are the next AC/DC

  10. bofarr says: Apr 27, 2009 11:41 AM

Mortenson couldn’t beat Dick for the starting job at Arkansas. Pun intended.

  11. pasmithlaw05 says: Apr 27, 2009 11:43 AM

Here’s to hoping McShay has a son who plays college football and Kiper isn’t completely obsolete by that time.

  12. efftwofiddy says: Apr 27, 2009 11:43 AM

Kiper is the reason I didn’t turn the channel away from NFLN all day. Well, that, and the fact that Mayock rules…

  13. SonnyMooks says: Apr 27, 2009 11:43 AM

I’m trying to find the article now, but I know that Kiper noted that he had known Morts kid for many many years now, and it would be interesting on draft day.

  14. TCLARK says: Apr 27, 2009 11:44 AM

The NFL network did a wonderful job covering the draft. And I ,almost, always find something to gripe about. Bravo NFL network. Bravo.

  15. Heinekenfun says: Apr 27, 2009 11:49 AM

What Does Kiper do the rest of the year? I can’t imagine he’s paid well enough from Draft Weekend to sustain any kind of decent living, much less, the high cost of black hair dye.
    Paint your bald spot?

  16. TealDeal says: Apr 27, 2009 11:58 AM

Hey, he’s gotta be better than Vince Young.

  17. newman says: Apr 27, 2009 11:58 AM

that’s not true…. alex mortenesen has expressly stated that he wants to coach. he transferred out of Arkansas to a D-II program where he would play. But he decided to transfer back to Arkansas his senior year, and his stated reason was that he wanted to coach one day, and he knew the experience at a D-I school would help with that. In all honesty, I would imagine that’s how he views being invited to the Titans training camp. So Kiper wasn’t slamming Alex, he clearly knew that coaching is what the kid really wants.

  18. Wrathchild says: Apr 27, 2009 11:58 AM

Well, don’t ask a douche like Kiper if you don’t want a douche of a comment.
He has zero chances of making the team, looks like a favor to me.

  19. alansaysyo says: Apr 27, 2009 12:12 PM

Wait, Mort found a woman willing to have sex with him?

  20. joeyb says: Apr 27, 2009 12:21 PM

    Florio 1 Kiper 0
    Well said.

Agreed. That’s how I took it. Wasn’t a big deal.

  22. JustPlayFootball says: Apr 27, 2009 12:30 PM

For all the knocks Kiper gets (including this 2nd rate site), he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the players drafted and has probably watched as much film as any coach. On ESPN they were trying to trip him on player knowledge and he always came through.
He seems about as right as any coach out there and Lord knows the avrage NFL team makes plenty of mistakes every draft. Remember Ryan Leaf, when the Chargers traded up to get the #2 overall pick (trading two first-round picks, a second-round pick, a linebacker and Eric Metcalf)?
Kiper has a job many of us would dream of and got it beacuse of hard work and much like Florio, he created a niche.

  23. RobJH says: Apr 27, 2009 12:32 PM

Alex Mortensen better be looking over his shoulder, Schefter’s kid is gonna take his job.

  24. Sir Loin of Hoboken says: Apr 27, 2009 12:43 PM

I’m aware he has coaching as an interest, but do you think he is trying out to be a player, to be a coach? Clearly, he’ll have a lot of doors open because of Mort (half the battle), so why would he take the player route? Maybe because he would like to play. And Kiper dismissing that when the question was expressly about him as a player is a bit ridiculous. I appreciate Kiper and think he does a good job on draft day, but Mort was clearly uncomfortable.

  25. mrf47 says: Apr 27, 2009 1:08 PM

Kiper’s smugness is inversely related to the amount of days ESPN puts him on television.

  26. footballfan09 says: Apr 27, 2009 1:10 PM

    Heinekenfun,
Interesting you said that because Kiper does ESPN Radio during the year and has his own company. He gets paid big money. There was a dispute over his contract not long ago because he felt he even deserved more money.

  27. footballfan09 says: Apr 27, 2009 1:15 PM

    JustPlayFootball,
Actually Kiper is awful and his accuracy is shown every year. Remember when he rated USC WR Mike Williams #1 overall? How has that worked? His number 1 player doesn’t have to be the best but he should at least be on a roster 5 years later and starting.
One thing about Kiper is that he is the first. Mike Mayock has him beat in every aspect. Ask yourself, does Kiper ever say anything about a player that is not obvious to all of us when watching games or reading a bio or even scouring other websites?
Kiper is great at memorizing information and can tell you random facts about players because he constantly reads on the internet and watches games in the fall on TV. He doesn’t see coach’s tape, unlike Mayock.
Here is something that Mel Kiper would say “USC QB Mark Sanchez has a strong arm and the intangibles but only started 16 games at USC. Had he stayed in school he could have been more pro ready but he still has the tools to be a franchise QB down the line. He threw for 2,500 yards and 28 touchdowns last year.” (Just throwing out a number on stats).
Okay let’s disect this. Anyone can find the stats and games played. Common sense tells you that one more year would help him develop and we can all see he has a strong arm. Kiper really doesn’t say anything that a hardcore draft fan, other website, etc. doesn’t already know.

So he went undrafted yet Kiper is wrong? How does that make sense?

  30. madsqgrdn says: Apr 27, 2009 1:32 PM

The NFL network broadcast was the best draft show ever. I went over to espn fir literally a second and saw kiper and mcshay just trying to out do each other. Mayock casserly and the rest of the NFL crew weren’t trying to out shine each other.. I felt like they were just talking football….keyshawn Johnson…. Really???

  31. madsqgrdn says: Apr 27, 2009 1:37 PM

    Johnny boy
I don’t think anyone is saying kiper is wrong thier just saying he’s a complete douche, and you’d have a much better time watching mike to, and charley casserly on the NFL network.
    Casserly is the man

Was he Mr. Irrelevant like he was at Arkansas?

  33. Favre2012 says: Apr 27, 2009 1:53 PM

So you think Kiper should lie just because he works at the same network as Mort?

  34. mike hunt says: Apr 27, 2009 2:19 PM

Kinda off the subject, but if Kiper is a doucher, what does that make all the lame overweight fat ass fans wearing lame oversized jerseys, acting stupid, saying stupid shit, and watching the draft for 36 straight hours. Kiper probably gets more pussy then all those bozo loser fans put together..I love football, and ive played at a high level myself, but if you are a grown man, wearing jerseys all the time, and you paint your face, act a fool at a game, etc etc..I mean, come one get a life..sniffing the ass of guys that are 20 yrs younger than u is sad

We needed an arm for rookie camps, but Google this kid; he looks like he’s 12. He may know Cortland Finnegan though, he went to Samford as well.

And yet those guys aren’t paid to be on TV, are they? They very well may be asshats, but they aren’t featured for 6 weeks on TV and interviewed by everyone and his mom.

  37. nebakanezer says: Apr 27, 2009 4:23 PM

In Mort’s defense, he very rarely encounters the truth, so it often comes as a surprise to him.

  38. clint taurus says: Apr 27, 2009 4:25 PM

if you thought Kiper/Mort was awkward, imagine being Phil Simms when the subject of matching bro-tattoos comes up…

  39. chaz13 says: Apr 27, 2009 6:26 PM

IIRC Kiper said that long term he sees Mort Jr on the sidelines and eventually becoming a head coach. Mort’s response was well right now he’s still thinking like a player. By the way he said it he seemed a little perturbed.

  40. conwaywest22 says: Apr 27, 2009 7:02 PM

See Florio, you hate Mel Kiper for one reason and one reason only.
NFL execs actually acknowledge his existence.

  41. jagsphan says: Apr 27, 2009 7:51 PM

Jaws is the one who first said that he will be a coach in the league. Then Kiper agreed with him.
