Bills coach Dick Jauron said up to 10 of the rookies who tried out at minicamp could be invited back later in the month. The Dolphins hope WR Patrick Turner’s size gives them a new dimension in their passing game. Patriots RB Fred Taylor sprained his left wrist while working out on his own in Florida. Rich Cimini of the Daily News reports that undrafted rookie LB Jamaal Westerman created a lot of buzz around Jets minicamp. Free agent WR Kelley Washington will try out for the Ravens at this week’s minicamp. James Walker of ESPN.com reports that Bengals LB Rey Maualuga may have to move outside to play immediately. Browns WR Brian Robiskie has run into some of the guys he used to work with when he was the team’s ball boy during high school. Steelers CB Ike Taylor worked out with rookie CB Keenan Lewis in Florida before the draft. Said Texans RB Chris Brown, “I think they’ve got big expectations for the whole running back group to go out there and have a 1-2 punch with [Steve] Slaton and I. Hopefully, we’ll get the job done and make the playoffs and go for a long run.” Colts coach Jim Caldwell said the team will start figuring out their starting linebackers during OTAs. Said Jaguars WR Torry Holt, “I don’t like [rookie] Jarett Dillard. I don’t like [rookie Mike] Thomas. I don’t care too much for those guys because I feel like they’re coming in to take my job.” If undrafted rookie DT Mitch King sticks with the Titans, it may be because he outplays DT Sen’Derrick Marks, a second-round pick. Mike Klis of the Denver Post would be more surprised if the Broncos were worse than 7-9 than if they are better than 9-7 in 2009. Bill Williamson of ESPN.com thinks LB Larry Foote would be a good addition to the Chiefs at linebacker. The Raiders announced the signings of rookie free agent linebackers Frantz Joseph and David Nixon. Said Chargers LB Shawne Merriman, “I’m frustrated as hell. I want to get out there and play ball. The advantage I have is that I get to do it with a helmet and shoulder pads, so any frustration I have will be taken out on the field.” Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis’ injury could have on-field ramifications for the team. Michael Irvin said he was “floored” that the Giants didn’t get a veteran wide receiver. Eagles CB Jack Ikegwuono is trying to earn the team’s confidence. Redskins backup quarterbacks Colt Brennan and Todd Collins may be battling for positioning to step in and replace QB Jason Campbell if he leaves after the 2009 season. Bears coach Lovie Smith said that the team will have a competition for both starting safety spots. The Lions signed DE Eric Hicks, who played for defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham in Kansas City, and released RB Brian Calhoun, WR Steve Sanders, and WR Travis Taylor. Out of football since 2006, Packers P Adam Graessle thrust himself into the team’s punting competition at minicamp. Rookie free agent T Nick Urban signed a contract with the Vikings on Monday, and then worked a shift at Target. Said Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff of DT Peria Jerry, “Peria’s a big ol’ strong, country guy. He’s going to hold the point [of attack]. He has the ability to be a one-gap guy and disrupt behind the line of scrimmage. He’s a high-motor defensive lineman who was very productive.” Because of the changes on the defensive coaching staff, Panthers CB Richard Marshall said he feels like a rookie all over again. Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com hasn’t heard anything about Saints’ interest in RB Edgerrin James. Said Buccaneers defensive coordinator Jim Bates of Jermaine Phillips’ transition to linebacker, “We haven’t put the pads on, and nobody’s coming at him at 100 miles an hour, but he has comprehended the scheme, and his transition, I think, is ahead of schedule.” Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic writes that it is time for Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin to end the “pity party.” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo feels that his team is starting to come together after two minicamps. Dan Brown of the San Jose Mercury News thinks 49ers LB Scott McKillop’s play is reminiscent of former 49ers LB Derek Smith. The Seahawks signed FB David Kirtman, a 2006 fifth-round pick, to a one-year contract.
