The Minnesota Media Is Getting Restless

Most football observers are getting frustrated with the Brett Favre situation because Brett Favre won’t let anyone know what he’s actually planning to do.
In Minnesota, writers from each of the two leading newspapers are getting frustrated with the Brett Favre situation because the Vikings won’t let anyone know what they’re actually planning to do.
Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune made a plea for something definitive from the Vikings earlier today, before the on-again, off-again talks between player and team were on, again.
Tom Powers of the St. Paul Pioneer Press has since banged out a scathingly hilarious (or is it hilariously scathing?) item calling for the Vikings to provide something other than a “no comment.”
Along the way, Powers coins a great name for the two-headed Plan B in Minnesota if Plan Brett doesn’t come to fruition.
“Perhaps their thinking is that if the deal blows up, they can downplay it and claim they’ve always loved Sagvaris Jackenfels and were just making a courtesy call to a future Canton inductee,” Powers writes.  “That’s fine, but how do they think poor Sagvaris feels reading and seeing all this stuff right now?

Just go play for the Raiders

  2. NonYahooHotmailAcct says: May 8, 2009 10:09 PM

Can Viking fans really want this guy?

  3. JoeSixPack says: May 8, 2009 10:13 PM

If Jackenfels did a better job of throwing tight, strong, straight interceptions just like Favre maybe the Vikes wouldn’t be interested in looking for a new QB in the first place.
The way I see it he’s got no one to blame but himself.

  4. Someone says: May 8, 2009 10:17 PM

The Pioneer Press always copies the Star Tribune. And to keep it real, the coaches and Favre are doing what they need to do in terms of Favre and if he can play healthy. The media who needs to know everything is the problem. It’s only been 4 freaking days of speculation while the entire media network has gone nuts. I think 45% of the coverage here on PFT has proven that.

  5. Tundrastruck says: May 8, 2009 10:20 PM

They want Favre because they are delusional. They think he will somehow stick it to Packers fans…his track record speaks otherwise..he stuck it to Packers fans, he stuck it to Jets fans, what makes anyone think it will be different with Vikings fans?

“That’s fine, but how do they think poor Sagvaris feels reading and seeing all this stuff right now?“
It’s probably as torturous for them as it is for us PFT readers.

I really can’t believe how bad the media is reporting this story. EVERYONE

  8. EB says: May 8, 2009 10:28 PM

Remind me again why the Packers & Jets didn’t want this guy anymore?

  9. cipher35 says: May 8, 2009 10:30 PM

The sad part is that Farve playing for the Vikings is not a bad idea. He is an immediate upgrade. Hard to believe Jackenfels would have the same success as Pennington did last year.

  10. Gravedigger says: May 8, 2009 10:39 PM

The whole saga is so stooooooooooopid I have no comment other than the Queens “fans” deserve this jerk.
God, the Packers will absolutely kill Betty!

  11. CanadianVikingFan says: May 8, 2009 10:40 PM

Can we play Chester Taylor under centre, he did throw a Td in a game *without a pick* something Favre, Jackson, and Rosencopter have trouble doing.

  12. cramjones says: May 8, 2009 10:40 PM

I don’t think Sagvaris Jackenfels can read the comments anyway. Sure can’t read a defense.

  13. madmax says: May 8, 2009 10:43 PM

the vikings only want him because he is a huge upgrade over anyone they have now! Not because he is the best ever. He is just the best available. Thats how watered down the league is with its parity! The truth is he can actually read a defense and go to the fourth guy if need be and they haven’t had a qb do that for a long time. Culpepper couldn’t go to the 2nd guy and never would have been effective without Randy Moss’s extra gear to catch up to the overthrown balls he threw so very often.

  14. jarfitz says: May 8, 2009 10:45 PM

Those 2 clowns are just picking up Jason Whitlock’s scraps. Oh wait, he doesn’t leave any

  15. Steelvike says: May 8, 2009 10:50 PM

Good Point JoeSixPack. If T-Joke was anywhere near the QB Childress thinks he can be… heck, if he was even half of what Childress thinks he can be, there would be no issue at QB. Ok, maybe not “no issue” but the QB problem wouldn’t be as big a deal as it is and they wouldn’t have to resort to looking at a 40 year old QB for one (maybe two) season(s).

  16. Jason says: May 8, 2009 11:00 PM

Gotta disagree with the reader who said the Pioneer Press always copies the Star Tribune. Granted, I prefer the Strib’s coverage, but Sean Jensen does a nice job of covering the team and gets plenty of first-run scoops for the Press.
By the way, what’s up with the story about the X-rays of the shoulder? Maybe there’s been another development, but an X-ray won’t reveal much beyond structural damage. Shouldn’t they be looking at an MRI? Again, I might have missed something or fallen behind on this constantly changing story.

  17. packerfanfornot4life says: May 8, 2009 11:19 PM

sagevaris jacksonfels ?? Powers didnt coin that name media here in GB have been saying that name since Rosenfels got there.
did the local media here coin it?? i dont know but ivt been said a longtime before today

  18. myasylum says: May 8, 2009 11:32 PM

Yea, as much as people don’t want to admit it, Farve is the Vikings best option compared to what they have. Like said above, it’s so true… It’s not the Favre is the best quarterback, he’s just the best one available. Simple as that. The rest is all media hype.

  19. tweinz says: May 8, 2009 11:48 PM

The only ones making a big deal out of this is the media and the bloggers. What a bunch of whiny crybabies.
The real issue for the Vikings is how do they get rid of Chili and the KAO.

Yup, I kinda have to agree with you on that. It does seem fishy. Especially since Bus Cook denied it (not that I believe him).
I wouldn’t be surprised if this was just a hoax designed by Favre to appear to be more serious than it is to get that “marketing deal” Ted Thompson offered him last year.
I don’t think Favre is the answer for the Vikes. They needed a guy like Cutler, or should have traded for Sanchez or Stafford – a guy that is going to be around more than 1 year.
Favre is firmly on the downward tilt of his career, and requires a coach with some balls to call him on his crappy play in order to keep him in check (like Holmgren and McCarthy did) – Unless Chilly grew a pair recently – I don’t see good things there.
If Minnesota Vikings fans hate the suspense and drama now – just wait until he’s on the team.

  25. PaulOttCarruth says: May 9, 2009 1:10 AM

You know, up until about Week 15ish of last year, Jets fans were pretty damn happy with Favre. Sooner or later, though, Brett does what Brett wants. And what Brett wants is pretty much never good for the rest of the team.
But since Vikings fans don’t seemingly know or care much about what goes on in the postseason, this is probably a pretty good fit.

  26. Darth Ringo says: May 9, 2009 1:30 AM

Maybe the proper term for something this screwed up is “hathing scilarious”

  27. schweinehund says: May 9, 2009 2:39 AM

The media never let the truth or facts prevent them from writing dead-wrong stories in the past. Since when do they have scruples?
Jesus H. Christ, we’re also talking about a state that elected Jesse Ventura as its governor and Al Franken as its US senator. How seriously should we take ANYTHING coming from Minnesota?

  28. Jux says: May 9, 2009 3:01 AM

I’m getting frustrated because I can’t go anywhere without reading about it. And PFT has a very disproportional amount of Favre content. You’d think he went to WVU or something.
I like PFT because unless I scavenge every newspaper website, I won’t get news as quick – I just hate filtering through all the Favre bullshit.

  29. lito says: May 9, 2009 3:09 AM

Sign Bret Favre for one year as a player with a huge incentive if he leads this team to a Super Bowl win. Then hire him next year to coach the other quarterbacks.

  30. the pdh says: May 9, 2009 3:48 AM

screw minnesota for getting restless over some old washed up qb, im getting restless waiting to see who wins florio’s old crappy qb book.

  31. seatofmypants says: May 9, 2009 6:43 AM

Favre is that stubborn turd that just won’t flush. If he signs with Minnesota, he will raise their confidence just to rip it out at the end as he pads his NFL All TIme Interceptions Record.
Remember how his last game ended with the Packers? Remember how he took an 8-3 Jets team and lead them to a 9-7 season. Down the stretch, he threw 8 Ints and only 2 TDS.

  32. crop71 says: May 9, 2009 8:31 AM

The only drama queens here are the Media.

  33. We_Miss_You_Dan says: May 9, 2009 8:39 AM

Everyone keeps talking about what a huge upgrade Favre is. Are you NUTS? ! Did you not see the last half of last season? Sure, he may be an upgrade in June, maybe even still an upgrade in October. Wait til December, though. Then all these queer purple people will be crying he screwed them over. HE’S 700 YEARS OLD!

  34. JimmySmith says: May 9, 2009 8:49 AM

COL Klink is in mid-season form, he has managed to throw two players (Sage and T Jack) under the bus before the team even got to OTA’s.
File this under, “Actions have consequences”. If Favre doesn’t play for the Vikings this year, how productive can either current QB be? They already know their head coach doesn’t have any confidence in them and that lack of confidence is huge for a QB as history shows.
I realize Klink fancies himself to be clever but this might be his Waterloo. That’s too bad, non Viking fans were hoping Ziggy would sign him to a 5 year contract extension.

  35. loilars says: May 9, 2009 10:34 AM

Who the hell cares if the media is restless? The media is half of the reason why this Brett Favre situation is such a fiasco. A bunch of drooling douchebags begging to be the ones to break the big story and they throw out everything they hear hoping to be “the one”. What a load of garbage. The media should just die already. Then sites like this pick up on these media vultures and reports what THEY’RE saying and gets everybody in a tizzy. If I were Brett Favre (and I hate Brett Favre) or the Vikings, I wouldn’t want to tell anybody anything either!! How the hell is anyone supposed to do anything without the whole world knowing if the media constantly invades everything and people constantly leak information. It’s all really disgusting.

  36. Brad Ward says: May 9, 2009 10:50 AM

Greg Bedard (JS) coined the Sagevaris Jackenfels name about two months ago….

Really? Are you serious? Do they get the NFL on Canadian television? Tarvaris Jackson threw 9 TD’s and 2 INT’s last season. How many QB’s threw ZERO interceptions last season? Those expectations are unrealistic as they come. You’ve lost your dang mind! That’s unbelievable. I’d prefer the game not get global if fans are this stupid.

Centre… may be a Canadian term, but we are discussing AMERICAN football, so it’s centER 🙂
