Andre Smith Is Getting Pulled In Many Directions

Despite being a big guy, Bengals tackle Andre Smith is apparently more malleable than Stretch Armstrong.
A league source with knowledge of the dynamics involving the sixth overall pick in the draft tells us that Smith is being pulled in many different directions regarding his ultimate choice of an agent.
One unlikely source of the tugging and the pulling, we’re told, is Bengals assistant head coach/offensive line Paul Alexander.
Per the source, Alexander is aggressively pushing Andre Smith to stay with Rick Smith of Priority Sports.
For now, Rick Smith is taking the position that he is still Andre Smith’s agent, and that he never was fired.
“Unfortunately this was never a story.  Nothing’s changed,” Rick Smith tells Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Curiously, Andre Smith’s former agent said the same thing exactly one month ago — not long before he learned that Andre Smith had fired him.
It remains to be seen whether Rick Smith is merely expressing blind optimism, or whether whatever fire started Tuesday has been extinguished.  However, we stand by our report as to the fact that something went down between the Smiths on Tuesday; we assume that Jim Trotter of SI.com and Steve Wyche of NFL.com stand by their stories as well.
So if, in our opinion, Andre Smith ends up sticking with Rick Smith, it only means that Rick Smith was able to get the situation back under control, possibly with the help of Paul Alexander.
Despite the suggestion by Andre Smith’s former agent, Alvin Keels, that agents have no impact on a player’s draft status, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals’ official web site explained after Andre Smith was drafted that the selection of Rick Smith helped seal the deal:
“One of the final pieces of the puzzle fell into place Tuesday night when Smith decided to go with agent Rick Smith and Priority Sports,” Hobson wrote last month. “[Paul] Alexander indicated that decision greatly impressed the Bengals because Priority has a long history of representing first-class offensive linemen that includes Levi Jones’ representation with Kenny Zuckerman.”

No maybe Florio it was just a rumor and you guys were wr wr wr wrong…. Still it isn’t like he was arrested/failed a drug test/skipped out on camp, etc. He was rumored to have switched agents. You jumped all over it with glee. Now it may have been all a rumor and you want to c.y.a. But the thing is no one cares. Is it really big news? Only cause he is a Bengal right….
He should have been drafted by the Pats or Vikes…. Maybe he would be in the right “structured environment”. As they say even as they ignore how many arrest the Pats had after their 18-1 season, or how the Vike’s and their love boat, or losing their “Williams Wall” due to substance abuse… Who cares right. “They have the pieces in place to handle players with character concerns”…

is he shirtless when he fires his agents?

It’s called gravity, and it’s from the small moons around his midsection. Scientists have even given it a working name: the Mel Kiper belt.

Based on the title, I sure thought this was going to be an article about Smith getting a happy ending at a massage parlour.

Eugene Monroe wasn’t picked because he isn’t the physical manchild Andre Smith is. This guy will be a pro bowl tackle. Monroe will also be a good player but does not posess the ceiling that Smith does. I will be laughing for years when big Dre’ plants that wifebeater James Harrison into the ground, much like when Levi pinned down Joey ‘petite teeth, big gums” Porter and made him his bitch.

This will be the way it is for years to come, choking in 06 and a string of arrests will stick with this franchise for the national media. More ball riding of the pats and steelers while ignoring their legal and behavioral travails. Good speculation too Mutt, keen insight…

I’m guessing this will be the last first round guy signing a contract with his team; he has ‘hold-out’ written all over him…
or maybe that’s ‘bacon cheeseburger’, hard to tell…

  13. Kaz says: May 13, 2009 1:09 PM

Mutt, much like when we laughed for days after we got our first win of the season against those same Jags….

  14. jmikeh says: May 13, 2009 1:22 PM

    @ Mutt
…because we already had a left tackle with bad knees. Until we cut him. Enjoy Monroe. He’s got “Boselli” written all over him. Not.

Ball riding, which is a great term that I plan to use from now on, is a common theme on this site. See Florio/Steelers. See Florio/Rooney’s. See Florio/the obese black dude who writes sports columns. See Florio/WVU.

Last time I checked the number of arrest the Bungles compiled far exceeded the Steelers, just like our Super Bowl Rings and your lack of them. How about you and Cleveland duke it out for the title of “Rust Belt Champion”?

But we have had arrest like that in 2 + years if you want to LIVE IN THE PAST like you did before you won 2 in the 00’s then by all means so will I…..I know the steel curtain is falling off like fruit flys do to the 70’s steroids….Thats why the team has a bunch of EX and current wife beaters…..You may want to educated yourself on the arrest statistics for NFL Teams to see who has the lead…remember the 3rd game of the season cause its comin and its time….Take shots at us we will be hear to do the same…PLAIN AND SIMPLE! Dish it out be ready to take it!
