Kiffin Can't Stay Out Of Trouble

One of the more interesting rubbernecking exercises over the past several months centers on the activities of former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, who now is the head coach at the University of Tennessee.
Our friends (OK, employees . . . but we follow the Michael Scott management style in which our only friends are our employees) at CFT have been chronicling the foibles of Coach Kiffin.
Kiffin’s most recent blunder involves the NCAA’s recruiting rules and the technology with the limitless potential but the horrible name:  Twitter.

Meanwhile, current Rockies first baseman and former Tennessee backup quarterback Todd Helton (yeah, we had to look up who Todd Helton is) had this to say today regarding Kiffin, during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show:  “I believe you should go in and do your job before talking.”
Patrick asked, “Do you think Lane Kiffin understands SEC football?”
Said Helton:  “He’s about to.”

  1. He’s about to understand what the backs of SEC running backs and receivers jerseys look like…..

  2. I wonder what happened. If I’m forced to click on a link to find out ANYTHING about it, I’m moving on. At least give us some idea of what took place.

  3. Kiffin just keeps proving Al Davis right, and what a douchebag he really is… listening to Meangelo talk about how close he was with Kiffin just gives credence to the fact that the bust FA signings during the Kiffin regime were his doings, not “crazy Al’s”…. What a turd….

  4. I take it you didn’t read the part about the post being made, not by Kiffin, but by a newly hired assistant, or that the post was up for less than an hour. But, by all means stay on the Anti-Kiffin bandwagon.
I don’t care for Tennessee football at all, but the media has been doing but bashing this guy since he got hired. He hasn’t coached a game yet and people are acting like he’s the worst coach in the NCAA. From what I can see he’s stolen some high profile recruits from super-recruiters Dick Saban and Urban “Notre Dame” Meyer, so he seems like he’s doing a decent job so far.

  5. The point is the S E C is the king of football … that lollypop west coast football wont work down South …. pretty boy kiffin is gonna get turned out like a cheap hooker…..

  6. Patrick asked, “Do you think Lane Kiffin understands SEC football?”
    Said Helton: “He’s about to.”

I’m tired of all this “oooohhhh the SEC is so amazing” crap. This guy coached in THE NFL. Granted, he coached a terrible team and didn’t do much with them at all, and it wasn’t for very long, but come on. Todd freakin Helton doesn’t think this guy can handle freakin college? I call B.S. If he doesn’t do well, it’s because he’s not a good coach. It certainly isn’t because the SEC is so super amazing. You could put an SEC all-star team up against ANY NFL team and they get destroyed every time. It’s freakin college, people. College.

  7. You were kidding when you said you had to look up who Todd Helton is, right?…Right?

  8. Even if Al Davis was right about Kiffin, he’s still all wrong as an owner. The game and the business of the league has passed him by. Having a revolving door of coaches is no way to win. Not having a quality front office with a top notch GM is no way to run a team. Meddling in the business of coaching a modern pro football team is no way to run a team. Drafting the way he does is no way to build a winning football team. Even if Davis was right about Kiffin, he’s still all wrong. And he’s still among the worst owners in all of pro sports.

  9. Have you been living under a rock(ies) if you don’t know who Helton is? But of course, he was the quarterback that freshman Peyton Manning replaced in 1993 against Mississippi State. He also went on to become a stud baseball player for the Colorado Rockies. You really had never heard of him?

  10. Seriously Florio? Todd Helton. The man who just reached 2,000 hits last night. Dude, you need to try traveling west of the Mississippi for once.

  11. Never heard of Todd Helton? Look, football is by far the best sport, but if you don’t know who Todd Helton is, you don’t know jack about sports in general.
Yes, Lane Kiffin aside, Al Davis is still a crazy old man.

  12. I don’t see why Al is being cleared of any wrong doing just because Kiffin proved how much of a D-Bag he is. At the end of the day, Al still hired him. Atleast he owned up fired him too.

  13. Yeah I’m with junior. I was going to say something about how stupid and minimal a violation this really was (and really wasn’t worth the top 8 headlines of the day at ESPN.com), but when you don’t even know who Todd Helton is… I mean the guy only flirted with being the first person to bat .400 since Ted Williams did. Do you even know who that is, either?

  14. “And maybe now people will stop calling Al Davis crazy for firing this turd.”
That won’t happen, because most all of the Raider haters are too illiterate to put two and two together. When it comes to Al Davis, you could tell those sort twats that the sky is blue, and they would swear it was green. They’re forever stuck in stupid mode, and don’t know how to make decisions for themselves. It’s a hard thing for sheep to do.

Written just like someone who only believes what he reads. Remember this. THe Raiders keep their doors tightly shut to reporters. Everything you read about Al tampering with coaches and such, is nothing more than speculation by a very biased and pissed off media. They don’t like being shut out.
I agree, a revolving door with head coaches is a bad idea.
Still, to call Al Davis among the worst owners in sports, is to prove that you have absolutely no clue what-so-ever. Until you go out and buy a professional sports franchise, it would be best for you to just STFU. Your opinions is not based on fact, and it proves your a dumb shit.

  16. @Florio
I can understand not following the Rockies or not being a huge baseball fan, but seriously? If your that big of a football fan that you write your own football blog, you probably have seen SportsCenter a time or two.
Annnnd chances are that you don’t go into a coma during non-NFL related segments.

  17. Florio! You just made yourself look dumber than kiffin for posting that update on twitter saying you don’t know who Todd helton is! Holy cow! He is Denvers baseball equivelant to Elway! He was also the last tennsee an in front of Peyton Manning and got hurt which led to peyton becoming there starter for good. I can’t believe you could honestly not know who he was. Wow. He is 1 of 4 active players to hit 2000 hits with one team and the other 3 are jeter chipper and garret Anderson so just pay a little attention to baseball for now on. Damn broden your horizons!

  18. I think Florio feels threatened by athletes with an above average IQ. That is why he hates baseball.

  19. The people who say, “It’s just football,” clearly have no clue. It’s on another level, and if you’re either to biased or too ignorant to see that, I’m sorry for you.
it’s like when you watch USC next to the rest of the pac 10 teams, you recognize they’re better. Same difference with how tough that league is. There’s a reason that oklahoma was scoring damn near 80 points a game every week, until they played a team from the SEC in the championship game. Believe me, being a Florida State grad, I’m no Florida fan, but I wouldn’t say ignorant shit like that about their league, even when FSU was at it’s peak.
It’s why i shook my head when Kiffin took that Tennessee job because he’s obviously like many of the posters here and has no clue about what he’s getting himself into.

    1) First of all, players have gone on record about Al Davis meddling in the coaching.
    2) Second of all, coaches have gone on record about Al Davis meddling in the coaching.
    3) Thirdly, everything I posted is fact. I don’t need the media to tell me anything. I have Al Davis’s actions, his words, as well as those of other owners in sports to compare him to. And then, of course, there’s the product on the field…………which is also easy to compare to the competition. And quite simply, the product Al Davis puts on the field is utter garbage and has been for some time. Organizations win championships, and that’s why you’ll never see the Raiders win another Super Bowl (or even contend for one) as long as Al Davis is running the team.
    4) Fourthly, sounds like you’re one of the few morons left who still defend Al Davis who can’t offer up any kind of legitimate reason to do so that can’t be shot down in seconds.

  21. Florio, we get that you hate baseball, enough already. Do us a favor and don’t insult our intelligence by hiding behind the fact that you are LIMITED in your sports knowledge with implying Todd Helton is a nobody. Any half ass “sports” media outlet knows who the hell Helton is, even some schmuck from North Dakota who does sports for the 10 o’clock news. Hell you would think with your football background, you would know that Helton played QB at UT. Good job Florio, good job!

  22. First, I’m not sure it’s technically a violation of that recruiting rule if the posting said that the player had committed, and the rule says you can’t post regarding potential recruits, because at that point he’s no longer a potential recruit (see definition of the word “committed”). Second, who cares who Todd Helton is? It’s baseball. Any game that can be explained as “You see the ball, you hit the ball” by one of its best players isn’t really worth the time.

  23. Dear CaptainFantastik, you aren’t able to state players, coaches “have gone on record about Al Davis meddling in the coaching” as evidence without providing the quotes and the references or at least the references. Also, whether or not you have “Al Davis’s actions, his words, as well as those of other owners in sports to compare him to” (you again fail to provide the quotes and the references so it would have been easy as with your earlier posting to assume you based it on media reports) what you deduce from this is your judgement which may or may not have any bearing in reality based on whether or not you are in a position to make a correct judgement. Presumably you disregard the past history Al Davis has along with the Super Bowl rings his teams have won and the number of Super Bowls they have been in (three and five respectively). So currently he is in a slump, I trust (without knowing) since you are so disrespectful of his team now, that you are a fan for a team which is beyond comparison in excellence (and presumably has the best record where Super Bowls are concerned)? You reduce yourself to the level of you antagonist if you respond to name calling with name calling. Finally, it is redundant to number your key points and then rewrite the number as a word, for example “1) First ….”, “2) Second ….”, etc.
