Obama Doesn't Mention The James Harrison Flap

The White House has released the full text of President Obama’s remarks in connection with the Steelers’ visit to the place where the country’s most well-known work-from-home employee resides.
To our initial surprise, President Obama did not offer up a lighthearted remark regarding the absence of linebacker James Harrison, the 2008 NFL defensive player of the year.
In fact, he didn’t mention the Harrison situation at all.  Which suggests to us that the President is probably a little miffed about Harrison’s decision not only to skip the trip, but to make a public spectacle of his position.
A transcript of the President’s comments is right here.
Harrison has drawn extensive criticism for refusing to accompany his teammates to the White House, initially explaining that he isn’t interested in going because the President invited the Steelers only because they won the Super Bowl.  Some league insiders have privately ripped Harrison for disrespecting not only the President, but also Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, appointed by President Obama to be the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland.
It has since been disclosed that Harrison has a fear of flying.  But a league source tells us that, while Harrison indeed does not like to fly, he has a reputation in the locker room for being a contrarian, and his teammates weren’t surprised by his refusal to make the drive to D.C.
In fact, Harrison would have spent far less time in his car than safety Troy Polamalu did in the air; Polamalu flew from California to Washington for the event.
It’s an honor,” Polamalu said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  “It’s an honor to be around real warriors, the President and the White House.  It’s a beautiful setting.”
The warriors to whom Polamalu referred are wounded veterans from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center, who were present for the ceremony.
The Steelers players and other attendees also helped prepare 3,000 USO care packages to be sent to troops overseas.
And we think that President Obama hinted indirectly at Harrison’s refusal while wrapping up the official remarks.
“[T]hank you again for your willingness to go above and beyond and not just come here for a photo op,” President Obama said, “but to join the men and women who protect this country to make sure that we are safe.”

Harrison is the man and the Steelers are the best franchise in the history of sports.

It must be the offseason if some comments about some traditional BS trip to the white house has everyone all wound up.

  3. EverybodyGotAIDS says: May 21, 2009 4:39 PM

Well Harrison didn’t go when they won when Bush was the president, so who cares if he goes when obama is? Also, to anyone who is going to say “BUT WHAT ABOUT THE TROOOOPS??”…they’re there to be used by Obama for the photo op. Does that show respect? Parading them out in front of cameras? For all we know, James Harrison volunteers at Walter Reed, so let’s not attack him for not going to a photo op.
That being said, the Steelers suck.

  7. The Jimmy says: May 21, 2009 4:44 PM

Yes Florio. I’m sure the President of the United States is highly distressed that James Harrison didn’t come to shake his hand. I’ll bet he’s been sitting up at night wringing his hands over it. Please….

“If James Harrison was the player you wanted him to be off the field, he wouldn’t be the player you want him to be on the field”
This isnt just a quick trip to the White House. You have to dress up, act happy, take hundreds of picture, maybe make a speech, etc. It may not simply be that he doesn’t want to meet Obama. Maybe he doesnt want to practice Wednesday, drive 5 hours to the White House, get dressed up, take pictures, give a speech, be in the spot light, then drive back 5 hours and practice Friday. It’s more than meets the eye here. Harrison is a private person. Has it crossed anyones mind that he would rather stay in Pittsburgh, continue his workout routine and spend time with his family? Nahh, you just think hes a dumbass.

I’m sorry, but did Polamalu refer to Obama as a warrior? Obama, the man who has never served in the armed forces, who is against American’s second amendment rights, and who cannot say more than a few sentences without using a teleprompter? That Obama? A warrior? Seriously?

  11. Favre2012 says: May 21, 2009 4:49 PM

War James Harrison being a grown man and not doing some b.s. just because everyone else does. I’m impressed that he turned it down from Bush AND Obama. Finally someone agrees with me that neither are anything special. Certainly not worth hurtling through the air in a metal canister, praying that the pilots aren’t on drugs.

Or how about this one: It’s not worth mentioning.

UMMMM… Just because Barry (yeah, I call him Barry – we’re good like that) didn’t mention Harrison in his speech does not imply he “is probably a little miffed” at him.
I mean… maybe… just maybe… would it be possible that he didn’t even notice? He is, after all, the most powerful man in the world and he is greeting a team of 50+ players, plus coaches, etc., after greeting the Phillies last week, and the Gators two-weeks before. This on top of, you know, running the country, trying to address the economic situation, dealing with 2 wars, and now running several of the largest banks and car companies… Do you think he really has time to concern himself with whether some dude comes to greet him? Even if he does know, why would he care????????
I mean, REALLY, Michael Florio? REALLY?

  17. BlogHog says: May 21, 2009 4:55 PM

I respect Harrison’s right to be so stupid as to not know what is an honor and what is a tradition.
He should just play without a helmet because he’s NOT protecting any brains.
It is the freedom we provide in this great country to let idiots act like idiots. Obama didn’t mention him because it is beneath him to even care.
    Why should he?
Obama is who he is, and Harrison is meaningless.
    Fear of flying?
It’s a 1000X safe then driving a car, but Harrison is too stupid to do ANY math.
    Total DUMBSHIT.
..and i like the Steelers so this isn’t hating.

I have an idea, maybe Barry doesn’t know who Harrison is.
He can’t exactly pronounce Massachusetts, thinks his Defense Secretary is Bill Gates, thinks there are 57 states, kids get breathalyzed, and can’t form a cogent thought.
Maybe that’s it Mike. I can sense the hurt you feel about Mean James harming your idol.

  21. mark0226 says: May 21, 2009 5:00 PM

Why would the President of the United States care/comment about someone who is NOT there? I’m sure he has better things to worry about than whether a football player accepts an invitation to visit. Now if Gordon Brown or Nicolas Sarkozy didn’t show, then he would have reason to be miffed, but James Harrison, who wasn’t even drafted? Come on.

  23. imaginesuperbowlwin says: May 21, 2009 5:01 PM

For the guy that called him a dumbass for being affraid of flying. Ya know some people have fears like that. Alot of people are affraid of spiders. A human is 10,000x the size of a spider. Does that make them a dumbass? Of course not. Im actually getting ready to drive from San Diego to Boston, because I have a fear of flying. I have been in many close calls on airplanes. Luck just isnt on my side in that aspect. So I drive now. Layoff the guy. As much as I hate the Steelers, and find any bad press amusing, I cant fault the guy here.

If we are looking at underlying reasons for comments(And we think that President Obama hinted indirectly at Harrison’s refusal while wrapping up the official remarks), how about his “Let me ask you a question,” Harrison said. “Why is it a big issue now that I’m not going if it wasn’t a big issue the last time?” comment? To me this was the most important thing anyone has said with regard to the whole ordeal. Even if Harrison is an idiot or a coward, at least maybe he recognizes this – An election that was supposed to be a step in the right direction towards burying the ignorance of racism and cultural segregation has done nothing but the contrary.

  36. Rhodium Heart says: May 21, 2009 5:38 PM

James Harrison. Right. But for the wrong reason.
Regardless. His interception return in the Super Bowl, at the end of the first half,is still the single most exciting play in Super Bowl history. The Tyee helmet catch (preceded by an Eli scramble worthy of Fran Tarkenton) and the Mike Jones tackle in Super Bowl XXXIV are the only plays that come close. And that’s all I want out of James Harrison; great football.

OK so I just finished reading the text, and I don’t see a single reason to even think that Harrison was even an afterthought for President Obama. Quit trying to make something out of nothing. Harrison is a good linebacker who came with a lame excuse to stay home, and that is all. No one ever accused him of possessing a degree in rocket science, or common sense for that matter.

People are dumb who say flying is safer than driving a car. That statistic is based on the number of vehicle accidents compared to plane accidents. OF COURSE there are more vehicle accidents. More people are on the road than in the air. There are millions of more cars on the road than there are planes in the air every day. On a “per trip” standard, driving is actually safer. On a per hour basis, flying is safer. This is because it favors the safest part of flying, i.e. the cruise condition (non-takeoff and landing). Realistically, if something goes wrong in a plane, you’re screwed. If something goes wrong in a car, you can usually pull over and call someone.

There’s something to be said for Harrison’s not caving to other people’s opinions if it’s no big deal to him and the whole flying practice thing makes sense. He’s still deserves criticism for apparently not seeing that it’ a huge honor just to meet the president, let alone be invited to the White House where to be honored for achievement in something you’ve worked your entire life for. Whether it’s just a stupid photo op or not is irrelevant, you’re turning down the chance to be honored by the leader of your country, it’s his loss if he chooses to be absent.
One other thing though, the whole “flying is safer than driving” thing is a load of crap. Yea the stats show less wrecks per person but there’s a huge difference between the two that makes the whole flying is safer complete bunk….
Most car wrecks aren’t fatal and you can walk away from, most plane crashes (I’d bet it’s easily over 90%) everyone dies and usually in pretty grisly fashion.

And as usual, Florio wrapped around the MSNBC, Today Show, ESPN, media gauntlet, and couldn’t wait to get the lips of PFT around the Oval Office to create some news regarding the Messiah in Chief.

osamabama is a puppet and he wants to take guns away, including those of returning veterans. basically anyone who didnt vote for him and doesnt kowtow to him… it is all about him and his handlers. i am not a big fan of cheney but cheney mopped the floor with buckwheat today.

  67. madmax says: May 21, 2009 9:30 PM

Florio you are a complete shithead!!! The next time you go to your shrink, have him look up your ASS! Because that is where your head is!!! Maybe you should have a piece of glass installed in your stomach so you can finally see clearly!!! I actually come to your site ALOT less than I used to just because of your paranoid opinions and pathetic liberal views. Do you really want to lose half your audience because you feel a need to push your opinion on your readers? Big mistake DORK!!!!!!!!

  68. empty13 says: May 21, 2009 9:35 PM

osamabama has written and signed onto papers advocating serious gun control.
his wife’s college thesis, like that of a recent famous female (supposedly) politician is chock full of “hate whitey”.
osamabama is shutting down fully prosperous car dealerships in the gm/chrysler “bailouts”. of course i am sure he is bailing out truly deserving dealerships, those of his failed and failing constituents.
wake up america. yer goin for a shitty ride.
not like i am much of a limbaugh fan anymore but i would like to see gutless waterboy for rahm emanuel, i mean, osamabama (resident zero!) debate limbaugh.
the left cannot afford to have that mental midget answering unscripted questions. he is an affirmative action civil righs lawyer, that is, to say, just a low level gangster in a suit. if he isnt surrounded by all his frenz, he cant go out and answer jack.

  76. bearfan75 says: May 21, 2009 11:10 PM

REAL quick, and I’m a little off topic…has Florio ever actually strapped the pads on and played the game? Ever taken a hit? I’ll respect it even if he played at Carnegie Melon (no, not on the JV cello squad, on the gridiron…if they have a team). If not, he’s the same as Clayton, only he is not as normal looking as Clayton.

I thought Liberals were supposed to have compassion for the less fortunate/educated among us and not act snobbish and elitist. Oh, darn. I guess Liberals are bigots too, just intellectual and educational bigots. Oh sh!t…I just blew my cover as someone that can read and didn’t vote for Mr. Obama. Quick Esther, get me my damn guns ‘fore this here boy takes ’em away.
    Liberals are condescending snobs. Really.

  78. kinghill says: May 22, 2009 7:47 AM

Harrison didn’t go because he heard all of Obama’s pals at Gitmo were coming to Washington to thank Obama for letting them out. He thought the Gitmo boys might do something inappropriate with explosives.

In all fairness, talking to people like you made us that way. Seriously, how am I not supposed to feel superior to that?

I believe the order of most titles won is as follows:
    Yankees
    Canadians
    Celtics
    Packers
    Lakers
    ……not sure after that

  82. Vox Veritas says: May 22, 2009 11:22 AM

Did you know that 95% of prison inmates are Democrats?
“In all fairness, talking to people like you made us that way. Seriously, how am I not supposed to feel superior to that?”
Well you COULD take a cue from all of the times that you get intellectually punked on PFT by people that can’t even spell “intellectually”.
What was Mr Magoo’s problem? He was near-sighted, and adamantly refused to admit his failed vision. Can’t think of a better alias for you, to tell you the truth.

  83. mwooley2323 says: May 22, 2009 12:15 PM

It’s amazing how the Obama haters have to criticize every little thing. You sound like a bunch of sore losers. Please go back to Hannity, Limpbuagh, and Coulter so they can tell you how to think.

  84. texasPHINSfan says: May 22, 2009 12:22 PM

can i just ask – why would the president be miffed if Harrison doesn’t go? why does Obama care?

  85. mwooley2323 says: May 22, 2009 12:46 PM

Ok, I know I’m going to get some flak for this but the reason people care about SBs more than the old championship games is because the those old championships was the title game for the old NFL (which consisted of 8-12 teams). Once the AFL gained strength, they decided to ADD an extra game between the NFL Champion and the AFL champion, which is now known as the Superbowl. So that old Championship game is the equivalent of our current AFC and NFC Championship games, it’s just not as important as the Superbowl anymore.

  86. mwooley2323 says: May 22, 2009 12:57 PM

An just to add to my aboive point. I’m not saying the old CHampionships don’t count or anything like that. It’s just comparing apples to oranges (Old NFL Championships to SB Titles).

I’d enjoy getting intellectually punked, it’d be a refreshing change from handing your dumb ass back to you on a regular basis. My failed vision is working out pretty well, I guess you don’t get poll and election results in your parents’ basement. Or stock market quotes. Or unemployment statistics. Just because you desperately want something to be true doesn’t mean it’s true. Pulling for the Cowboys should have taught you that.
