The other side of the coin is the league publishes a list of approved supplements to take and nowhere was Star Caps to be found. Regardless of intent, these guys were playing a risky game by knowingly taking a supplement that was never formally approved by the league. As such, the suspension should stand.
Besides, if weight loss was such a big deal, why couldn’t they just eat better?

Evil rotten cheaters? Irresponsible rulebreakers? Little harsh maybe? Careful when you finally decide to get off that horse Bob, it’s a long way down.
The fact is, the rules are the rules and the league needs to enforce them, regardless of the technicalities, regardless of the intent. The Williams’, McAllister, et al, may or may not have been attempting to mask steroids. They may not even have known what they were taking. That changes nothing.
At the end of the day, they still broke a rule and need to face consequences. Extending the suspensions seems unreasonable, everyone has the right to appeal. Enough is enough however. They’ve had their shot. Now they need to just give it up and work on ways to stay in shape so they’ll be ready to go on week five.

The players argument was that The NFL KNEW that Starcaps had a banned ingredient (not listed on the packaging). The league could have done something as simple as sending a league-wide memo. They did not. This whole thing is stupid, and with the current CBA coming to an end the league could be debacled (Thanks Emmitt)

All of you haters are simply missing the point…masking agent or not…it was proven they weren’t taking steroids or masking them. The NFL acknowledges it. That’s the whole point of this controlled substance rule…no taking of performance enhancing drugs, ie steroids. 4 game suspension in THIS case is too harsh.
If this was happening to YOUR favorite team, you’d be taking the same stance.

Irresponsibility is never an excuse under the law. It was laughable that the rulebreakers could argue they are not responsible for what they eat.
Those evil rotten cheaters will be punished for taking the steroid masking agent. There should be additional suspensions for going outside of the leagues discipline system and bringing more shame on the league.
These irresponsible rulebreakers are not man enough to stand up and take their punishment. They just whine and squeal like a pig.
Give them more than 4 games to help them grow up and start acting like men.
P.S.
All the money they will get billed by their lawyers for alleged hours of “work” did not change the end result one bit. It only made things worse for everyone except for the lawyers easy money.

The point here should be the fact that the NFL acknowledges that the boys weren’t masking steroids, as the pills reportedly do. SO, if they have a masking agent in the their system, and it is known/proven that they weren’t masking steroids…WTF is the issue? I think the NFL, in this case, should see it for what it is and NOT suspend the Williams Wall, because they weren’t trying to hide steroids.
Look at this way. The spirit of the the NFL rule on controlled substances, is to prevent players from using “drugs” as performance enhancers, i.e steroids. The StarCaps pills were being used to make weight, not mask steroid use. Since it is known by the NFL that they didn’t weren’t masking, steroids, then they didn’t violate the NFL rules. Because they tested positive for a masking agent, simply fine them and tell them no more StarCaps or be faced with suspensions.
This should be like all other future cases like this, be handled on a case by case basis. Make sure the intent of the players was NOT to mask steroid use. The NFL shouldn’t want to be so quick and broad with the applicaton of punishment for controlled substance violation……

i’m glad the league has been cracking down on players using banned substances and suspending them for it. however, the league’s decisions vary too much from case to case. these players are cheaters. they took a banned substance. it doesn’t matter what their intent was, they used it. they tested positive for it and now they should be suspended for 4 games. it’s ridiculous that this is even a discussion

Confused . . . . . why would we be confused ???
These guys took a substance that was not on the approved supplement list.
Now they are whining because the league didn’t have it on the banned list.
Maybe the league should have told them about this shit, maybe not but, they should have have known better than to take something that was not on the approved list.
Screw them, they’re Vikings anyway.
