Cutting Jansen Has Net Cap Charge Of $1.726 Million To 'Skins

The good news for the Redskins is that cutting tackle Jon Jansen allowed the team to avoid $2.35 million in payments due to Jansen this year in the form of roster bonus and base salary.
The bad news is that the move unleashed a cap acceleration in excess of $4 million.
Per a league source, the acceleration resulting from bonus allocations otherwise applicable to 2010 and 2011 is $4.076 million.
Bottom line?  The Redskins will take a net cap charge of $1.726 million in connection with the move.
But the $4 million acceleration costs no money, while at the same time creating the impression that the Redskins are spending up to the cap.  Even if, as to Jansen, his total cap charge of more than $6 million arises from money he previously received.

Why didn’t the ‘Skin draft a Right Tackle in the draft?

So there was no cap advantage whatsoever in cutting Jansen and the only advantage was in real dollars… could this mean that maybe Snyder is hurting for money? I mean cap wise they spent $1.7 mil to save a few real dollars… huh?

If he’s not hurting, then maybe just greedy. I don’t know, I’ve read many times that the Redskins (despite an overwhelming lack of success) have made a ton of money in recent years and are worth a ton of money….so maybe it’s just a way to put an extra mil+ in his pocket. Eh, can’t fault the guy. Money is money.

Jansen is the author of my favorite quote ever.
When asked about having two broken thumbs, Jansen replied:
“Sure it’d be great to be playing with 10 good fingers, but 8 will do just fine.”

I remember Madden saying a year or two ago that the Redskins had a solid offensive line but little depth beyond the starters. I can’t think of anything they’ve done since that doesn’t exacerbate that. Maybe Jansen’s health really made him a liability, but I always have thought of him as a solid player.
Seems like they’re setting Jason Campbell up to fail after looking for his replacement this offseason. It also seems like a waste to have a top end running back in his last years and give him no holes to run through and a bunch of WR’s with deep speed that probably won’t have enough time to beat anyone deep.
I would imagine the skins will field a top-10 defense and a bottom-10 offense this year unless I’m missing something.

Or maybe he is not happy with a backup job and was becoming quite vocal about it in the locker room.

Maybe so. My house is worth a lot more than I owe on it but that doesn’t mean I’m not one broke mofo right now.
