Browns Still Like Their Starting Corners

Even though the Cleveland Browns have been collecting cornerbacks like Jon Gruden harvests quarterbacks, new coach Eric Mangini says he’s still comfortable with the guys who started for the team in 2008.
And so there’s a good chance that Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright will keep their spots at the top of the depth chart in 2009.
But what of the fact that they both have periodically been torched?
Everybody gets beat deep,” Mangini said, according to the Orange & Brown Report.  “But, as a corner you have to have a short memory and go back and go again or it will happen again.”
The new arrivals under Mangni are Hank Poteat, Corey Ivy, Rod Hood, and rookie draft picks Don Carey and Coye Francies.
Then again, it could be that Mangini is merely hoping to trade McDonald or Wright, and that he realizes he needs to pump them up in order to create some leverage.

    Nothing like false speculation.

Doesn’t matter who they throw out there–Carson Palmer will make their DB’s look like garbage. The only Brown CB that played well against Palmer was Leigh Bodden and he’s long gone. I am envious that the Browns grabbed Rod Hood though, I wanted my Bengals to grab him as a nickel corner.

  3. Standish says: Jun 2, 2009 12:13 PM

Wright is the best corner they have, Mcdonald played much much better in the last 5 games (And he can’t play inside in the nickel) so its not a bad thing that these 2 young corners are atop the depth chart. They should continue to grow and Cleveland may have a top half secondary if they can get some pressure. Anyone would get beat playing behind Clevelands pass rush.

“Everybody gets beat deep,” Mangini said, according to the Orange & Brown Report. “Especially Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright. Those guys suck.”

You mean the Bowns corners affectionately known as TOAST??? oh those corners……ok

  6. deymond says: Jun 2, 2009 12:42 PM

Yes Florio, it seems likely that the Browns brought in two 32-year old cornerbacks and two 6th round picks so they could trade away Wright and McDonald.

“Mangini says he is still comfortable with the players he had in ’08?”….sounds like Mangini has already folded like a lawn chair and expects to lose….A LOT!!!!!

Eric Wright is actually a very talented cornerback and has played at a high level his two years in the league. If he played on a team with a true defensive scheme and some semblance of a pass rush to put pressure on the opponents passing game, you would have seen him in the Pro Bowl by now. Unfortunately for him, he played in Romeo Crennel’s Prevent Us Accidentally Winning Game-planning and had the joy of defending wideouts for four times the normal.
McDonald is a third corner at best, expect to see Hood starting soon.

Is it me, or has Mangini been talking to the press alot in the past week or so…
maybe he’s trying to cover-up the bad press he’s gotten from that 10 hr bus trip?

A stat for all the geniuses out there….
Browns Defense ranked #2 in the league for MOST interceptions (23) during the regular season. Yeah, these guys suck!!!

  13. kardiac says: Jun 2, 2009 1:04 PM

Oh, and that’s #2 in the league…. WITHOUT a pass rush!!!

Carson Palmer = Shaun Rogers’ bitch.

“Carson Palmer = Shaun Roger’s bitch.”
Palmer didn’t play in either Browns game this year, douchenozzle. Pretty sure the ‘gals crushed the Lions a couple of years ago too, likely the only encounter between the two.
The only thing that is Shaun Rogers’ bitch is a buffet line.

I think Wright’s height is a problem, but having said that, a poor pass rush will hang out any backfield to dry. Mangini is working on and has addressed different personnel on the line and at linebacker. The defense should prove to be more aggressive and hopefully more effective this next season.

Cleveland = every other AFCN teams’ bitch.
Palmer and every other decent QB will torch the browns D this year.

  19. mwooley2323 says: Jun 2, 2009 3:07 PM

hey kardiac, what did that #2 in INTs ranking do for your boys? Oh yeah, a 5-11 record. Garbage INTs from Cincy’s backup QB are meaningless.

  20. mwooley2323 says: Jun 2, 2009 3:11 PM

We like the browns starting CBs also.
Signed, Ben R, Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Heath Miller.

You better be worried Carson Palmer being able to throw it past Leigh Boddens grandmother!! He is washed up.

  26. Ammo says: Jun 2, 2009 6:30 PM

I have to believe Wright, McDonald, Hood, Ivy and one of the rookies stepping up can provide a solid dime package this year. (I know that’s 5 CB’s…bear with me…I’m talking competition here…the cream will rise to the top).
It’s totally different from Wright, McDonald and Cousins last year…Cousins got torched…and IMO the nickelback is essentially a starter as well.
Elam is a safety who can cover unlike Jones…I think the Browns DB’s will be much improved this year.

  27. ppdoc says: Jun 2, 2009 7:44 PM

Corey Ivy is a good guy. A good special teamer. Nice blitz on occasion, but if you need him to defend anyone with more than a modicum of talent he sucks.
The dude who thinks that Eric Wright would be a probowler in a different scheme must be smoking too much crack.
The Clowns defense is horrible and picking up a handful of second rate defensive backs is not going to make it any better.
If its any consolation, when you guys are once again drafting in the top 10 positions maybe there will be a real shutdown corner you can take.

  28. T Arthur says: Jun 3, 2009 12:52 AM

Eric Wright is an elite cornerback and it’s very obvious to anyone who’s watching. Corners are like closers in baseball. You can never have enough good ones. And Wright is a good run support guy. They could move him to safety in 5 or six years the way the 49ers did with Ronnie Lott and their Eric Wright. The Cardinals lost the Super Bowl because they were not deep enough at the cornerback position and couldn’t “close” the game out.

  29. stanjam says: Jun 3, 2009 9:20 AM

Mangini is used to corners getting beat deep often. Remember he is the same guy who thought Hobbs is an excellent corner.
