Runyan Still Recovering From Microfracture Surgery

His old team, the Eagles, has moved on without him.
But even if he still had a spot on the roster, offensive tackle Jon Runyan wouldn’t be ready to take to the field.
Runyan had microfracture surgery earlier this year to repair a damaged knee.  He’s still rehabbing.
I don’t worry about the situation,” Runyan told Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  “Ultimately, the biggest thing I have to do is get this knee right.  There are 31 other slots where I can go play.  Even if it’s not now, somewhere down the road there are going to be a wave of injuries, so I have to take care of what I can and let the rest work itself out.”
It’s unclear when that will occur.
“We’ve been in contact with a few teams,” Runyan said.  “Everybody says the same thing:  ‘What will you be able to do and when will you be able to do it?’  I don’t know that answer yet.  I don’t know how my body is going to react to the next month.  I have to get it right and when I do, people will be waiting for me.”
Meanwhile, it sounds as if Runyan is thinking that maybe the Eagles have made the wrong decision in going with Shawn Andrews as the new right tackle, given his injury history.
“He has missed more than two seasons in five years, so that is something you do have to worry about,” Runyan said.  “I think sometimes he worries about how he’s going to feel down the road, and you can’t worry about those kinds of things.  You have to go out and let it all loose.  Don’t worry about that stuff because that’s not how you play the game.  That’s how you get hurt, when you start worrying about that stuff.”
Of course, Runyan got hurt without worrying about that stuff.
He’ll be visiting Dr. James Andrews in early July, and Runyan is awaiting clearance to resume running and cutting.
One team to watch is the Vikings, where former Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress is (at least for one more year) the head coach.  Though Phil Loadholt was drafted in round two with the notion of making him the team’s right tackle, having Runyan on board for a year or two might provide a smoother transition.

Everyone acts like Childress is a fool and will for sure be gone this year without a superbowl; however, he did bring the vikes Ap, a NFC north title, and a playoff birth since he has been with the team. I don’t agree with the ultra conservative play calling, but looks like he will open it up this year, repeat as NFC north champs, and possibly reach the superbowl…

Then again, Runyan got hurt after 190 consecutive regular season and 18 postseason starts.
208 consecutive starts. Runyan last missed a start in 1996.
It’s no wonder that Runyan finally “got hurt”.
Those are mindboggling numbers as opposed to Shawne Andrews missing 29 regular season and 6 postseason games over the first five years of his career.

Runyan is right, Andrews is a mistake out there. Heck having both brothers on the team is a mistake. Andrews + Andrews = Double the injuries.
I have a feeling Runyan might just be back in an Eagles uniform at some point in the season if his rehab goes ok.

lions should get him and put him at guard.

I would LOVE to have Big John back on the roster this season , he is a solid O lineman . I don’t think that he is done.

With that string of conescutiove games, he should pretend to retire every year for then past 10 years and then hope that some team says, “please John come back. Please, Please, you are so great. Can we watch you mow your grass in Miss?? You are so down to earth with your ‘Aww Shucks, I just need a separte locker room and 20 Million per year’ approach”. Oh, wait Runyan can still play, is a team player, and is not scared of surgery.

something tells me we (Eagles Phans) have not seen Jon Runyan’s last game as an Eagle. Shawn Andrews scares the hell out of me and probably Donovan too.

Runyan is another in a long list of faithful birds who were thrown under the bus by Joe Banner.

Eagles fans: Just an FYI–Stacy Andrews is awful. Most overpaid O-Lineman in the league the last two years. Have fun with that waste of breathable air–I still don’t know why the Eagles wanted him so badly. Doesn’t really matter though, because your team seems to always be in the thick of it–with or without Donovan and/or Westbrook.

They think he can take care of his brother Shawn, who is one of the best linemen in the league when healthy.

The thought that keeps me awake at night is this:
Jason Peters has been labeled a lazy turd, Stacy Andrews a injury turd, and Shawn Andrews a mental turd. Then we got Jamaal Jackson at center who has done near nothing except stay healthy, and Todd Herremans, who Andy Reid suspends three times a year for being a turd in training. Ok, what we got here is fairly high in turd quotient and injury quotient . . . keeps me awake I tell ya . . .

I’m not worried about Stacy’s injury cuz if he isn’t back in time for the start of the season we have Nick Cole who can play. Cole has proven he can play well.
I think Shawn will be fine (mentally, that is) with his big brother and former college team mate on the team.
Peters was “a lazy turd” mostly cuz he wanted out of Buffalo. I don’t think he’ll be a problem this season cuz we just gave him a big ol’ juicy contract, but down the line he could become problematic.
If somewhere along the offseason one of the “turds” breaks down I pray to God, Buddha, Alla, Zeus, and Tom Cruise we (the Eagles) re-sign Runyan.
Florio feel to use that “I pray to God, Buddha, Alla, Zeus, and Tom Cruise” quote.

Runyan was a great player, but it’s overstating it to say he got “thrown under the bus by Joe Banner”. Microfracture surgery is no small thing, plus he had a cracked tailbone that wadn’t healed in two years of off season rehab. Pretty much a no brainer not to resign him until he can prove he’s healthy – can’t blame Banner for that call. Much as I wish the best for 69, it’s a long shot that he plays again.
The REALLY bad news is that if he does get healthy, I think his logical destination is to the stinking Redskins. They have a real need on the O-line and they’re pretty close to Runyans’ home in South Jersey. Man, it would suck to see him in a Washington uni.
