Rhodes: "We Will Be The Best Defense"

Linebacker Bart Scott, the New York Jets’ $48 million man, recently described the AFC East football team’s growing confidence as “swaggerlicious.”
Apparently that brash attitude is contagious.
Jets safety Kerry Rhodes recently made a bold prediction on his Twitter account, according to Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News.
In Rhodes’ opinion, “We will be the best defense in the league this year. I feel for the offenses we’re gonna face.”
And outside linebacker Calvin Pace echoed that statement, saying, “I don’t think you’ll find a better team on paper.”
Jets coach Rex Ryan has never been shy about talking big, and that approach is apparently rubbing off on his players.
So, the Jets are officially no longer boring. Time will tell if they can back up their words.
“I’m excited about that comment,” Ryan said of Rhodes’ Tweet. “You know what? I love the fact that he put ‘we will,’ not, ‘I’ll be the best safety.'”

Sorry Jets fans, but if your team thinks like this even the Bills are going to wipe up the field with Gang Green…

Yes, the Jets will have the best defense in the NFL and I will finally land that job as secret agent cowboy astronaut that I’ve been after for the past few years.

  7. Stillers says: Jun 4, 2009 3:29 PM

    hahaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha…
pardon me I had to laugh at that
Its easy for Bart Scott to talk a big game now that he doesn’t have to worry about Hines Ward knocking him out twice a year.

Gonna be fun to watch this so called “best defense” sucking wind in the 3rd and 4th quarters because their rookie QB can’t keep them off the field.

  10. Humpty Dumpt says: Jun 4, 2009 3:33 PM

Last year the Jets had one of the top rushing defenses in the NFL.
And they are now coached by the architect of the NFL’s most consistent top-ranked defense over the past decade….
Plus a new starting linebacker in Bart Scott, who already knows the system…
And two new starting defensive backs, Lito Sheppard and Jim Leonhard, who already knows the system…
Those words don’t sound too brash to me.

  11. drwho13 says: Jun 4, 2009 3:34 PM

This is fantastic news. I cannot wait until Ronnie Brown lowers his shoulder against Kerry and we get to tweet “how you feeling?” on Monday. Jets are going to be bad to terrible this year. Guaranteed.

    Memo to stupids:
-You have done nothing to intimidate anyone in the AFC East or elsewhere.
-The Patriots have absolutely dominated you this decade.
-Your collapse last year was one of the more memorable late season meltdowns in recent history
-And last but not least, you may think you’re a good team on paper, but not only are games not played on paper, but on my paper the Jets look like a 6 or 7 win team, with a dead last finish in the division.
Silly me, I thought my disdain for the Jets would dwindle to mere apathy in the post-Mangina era. I stand corrected.

Baltimore wasn’t the best defense last year and Ryan moving to a defense w/ less talent won’t make the Jets the best defense this year.

Let’s see…Rex Ryan is a players’ coach who has shortened practices and has gone easy on the players, with self-policing in the locker room.
Does that remind anyone of Romeo Crennel? It’s the EXACT SAME THING he did in Cleveland except Rex Ryan is more of a comedian and more of a friend figure than father figure.
    This approach will not work…

Let’s just focus on getting stronger, quicker and better in general and stop acting like your beating up on your own rookie QB somehow translates into being the best defense in the league 5 months from now.
Last time I checked, the Jets had a really good defense for half of 2008 and a really crappy one for the second half.

  45. indikid24 says: Jun 4, 2009 5:12 PM

I actually like the jets, but they might be turning into a version of the san diego chargers. They seemingly have a GREAT defense on paper at least. Bart Scoot is now on board and he always has some words to share with the media so this is no surprise, but i’m surprised that others have stepped up as well. It all depends on Scott, Gholston, and Lito Sheppard. If these 3 step up the Jets have a top 5 defense EASILY, arguably a top 3. If they don’t the jets still crack the top 15, but not amongst the great D’s in the NFL. I look forward to seeing the jets this year, they could either pull a bears 2005 (great defense, no offense) and make the playoffs or they could just be an absolute flare that dies by week 7. A very small portion of me thinks Sanchez leads the Jets offense. Their offense reminds me a bit of Atlanta’s last year, but not as good star power. But their defense seems better than ATL’s as well. So they could also pull a falcons, but i think Sanchez is going to have to learn a few years, not pull a matt ryan and go nuts. Good luck J-E-T-S

The Jets will have the second best defense of teams that play in GIANTS stadium. Hey, second place isn’t bad. Especially for a team that perenially scrapes the bottom of the worst division in the NFL. Historically of course. The AFC East has gotten better in the past few years.

You do know the reason they do not serve alcohol at Night games is because of Giant fans….So Jet fans are classless for screaming at a girl to show her tits but Giant fans are super classy for knocking a 60 year old out with a snow ball…Yea, this guy is the epitome of class:

Most people became fans because of geographic convenience. Most people on LI (where I live now) are either Jet fans, Giant fans, Met fans or Yankee fans. So chances are if you think all Jet fans are low earning neanderthals….what does that say about you….since you probably live next door to one.
