Dawson, Cribbs To Attend Browns' Mandatory Minicamp

Despite a contract dispute that remains unsettled, Cleveland Browns veteran kicker Phil Dawson plans to attend this week’s mandatory minicamp, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
It’s believed that Dawson has been boycotting voluntary workouts to make a statement that he wants a new contract.
Dawson has yet to explain his absence publicly.
Meanwhile, the agent for kick returner and wide receiver Josh Cribbs said that Cribbs will attend the minicamp as well as linebacker D’Qwell Jackson.
Cribbs’ agent, J.R. Rickert, said that no deal is imminent for Cribbs, who recently attended a voluntary minicamp after voicing complaints about his deal not being reworked by the new regime of General Manager George Kokinis and coach Eric Mangini.
Jackson is entering the final year of his contract and is due to make $640,000 this season.

Mr. Wilson, thank you for reporting information about the Browns without the anti Mangini spin we’ve all come to know all too well from Florio. Send him to a seminar or something.

isn’t it about time Mangini and Kokinis are given some credit for getting all of these malcontents into camp and quiet? Also looking at the roster the Browns have improved their depth/talent at every position with the exception of maybe TE. but if running the ball is a priority then Royal/Rucker is an upgrade over Winslow.

Lets defer credit for ManKok until they win something. As far as their roster, they’ve added a number of mediocre players to go along with the mediocre talent assembled by the last GM/Coach combination.

well production hasn’t stopped places like this and NFL radio for ripping the team every time a player upset with the last regime makes a comment. I also noticed you didn’t specifically name a position they haven’t improved this offseason.

I agree that the Browns have improved in just about every position, on paper at least. If you define “mediocre” as somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-8 or 7-9 than we’ll take it. Browns fans don’t expect a championship-caliber team, we just want these guys to work hard and play smart, tough football. It looks like Mangini has them pointed in the right direction.

Mediocre probably IS an upgrade for the Browns, but if we’re going to “defer credit” for ManKok until they win something, why don’t we “defer criticism” until the team actually plays a few games. I love the double-standard.

With the new wedge rule in the NFL, return guys like Cribbs production may aactually decrease significantly this year….. For this reason alone, the Browns should be very cautious about giving any special teams player a new big contract. Phil Dawson is getting what I call old leg in the NFL, and kickers can be replaced with younger, stronger legs…. both men were on a 4-12 team that did not win any games by great measure. Josh Cribbs did not impact the outcome of any games last year with thrilling returns, so why reward him for a so/so year, and Phil, he doesn’t mke 50 yard plus field goals very often…. no new deals….. with have other areas of concern …… if Cribbs wanta new deal…. add a cause to his existing 1 that rewards him a bonus, for 50 yard plus returns or taking it to the house baby….. if you redo these two contracts, then look for a line to form outside Manginis office door….. Shaun Rogers, Joe Thomas, any receiver that catches three balls etc….. when you start beating Pittsburgh on a consistent basis…. then get back to us about your need for extra bucks…… til then….. show the fans….v.i.c.t.o.r.i.e.s….. or keep your pie holes shut. Last year the team never showed up on Sunday to play, including these two leaders….bad year to justify big bucks….. when millions are unemployed…… we need blue collar lunch bucket players that are willing to do anything to win for their fans…. no prima dona big mouths……. enuff said…… you didn’t play hard for Cripsy Creme Crenell…. though every player claims how much they loved him….. example: the Braylon Edwards Dropsie show that featured triple the drops of the 8 gold medals by Phelps

WHILE I agree with the premise, The no wedge rule may make Cribbs more valuable. He’s one of the few return guys that has a rare combination of speed, agility, and strength. In many of his returns, he broke a tackle or two. He’s not as fast or pure speed like a Hester.

I agree, lets defer credit until they play some games and we can evaluate them on something that matters. Similarly, we should also defer criticism.
