Eagles Announce McNabb's New Contract

Minutes after reports surfaced of a revised deal between the Eagles and quarterback Donovan McNabb, the team officially announced the move.

“Donovan has played a large part of this team’s success over the last 10 years,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a release.  "He has been a professional in every sense of the word.”

“We are thrilled that this all worked out,” team president Joe Banner added.   "He is a great football player, a great person, and someone who gives back to the community.  We are lucky to have him in Philadelphia.”

"The Philadelphia Eagles organization and the entire city of Philadelphia are fortunate to have a quarterback the caliber of Donovan McNabb," coach Andy Reid said.   "He has proven himself to be a talented player on the field, a caring member of the Philadelphia community, and a winner."

Fine. Good. Great.

So why not sign him to an extension?

Previous reports indicated that an extension would come after the modification to the terms of the existing contract.  If that doesn't happen, then it's fair to characterize McNabb (as one media source has done tonight) as a lame duck.

An extremely well paid lame duck, but a lame duck nonetheless.

Who cares as of now he's our QB and he's happy. Trade him next year if he is injured or misses games and pray Kolb can take over. Lame duck or not this is a make or break year anyway. He'll be gone if he doesn't at least get to the SB. With that said I hope he plays 5 more yrs as an eagle and retires one as well.

“Donovan has played a large part of this team’s success over the last 10 years,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a release.

What success? LOL. The Steelers and Patriots are laughing hysterically over Lurie's statement.

So Florio, I disagree with your analysis and get my comment rejected? Not cool...

  4. brianforster says: June 11, 2009 11:22 PM

Could this have anything to do with the possible uncapped year?

never mind that last one don't post it

Kolb's deal expires in 2010, and there's no movement toward extending him. And frankly, I don't think they will. If they can get a 4th rounder or better for him, I think they'll take that deal. While he hasn't had much experience in games, his one appearance sucked, and he hasn't been lighting it up in practice either. In short, he has shown very little...

I know people hate to admit it, but McNabb has the leverage here in terms of getting an extension, if he wants one. If he enters the 2010 season w/o an extension, he'll get similar attention to what Favre gets now ("what team needs a QB in 2011 to get them to a Super Bowl?"). Meanwhile, the Eagles will be left praying that Kolb is something more than just a backup.

wow florio! if it aint viking it aint good

  8. cramjones says: June 12, 2009 12:19 AM

Perhaps the Eagles could be an "other" team Florio speaks about in his latest video. Couldn't they sign and trade McNabb to Minnesota for Favre, Sage R, and T Jack?

Why give McNuggets a new deal? He's under contract making decent money already. What is this deal supposed to accomplish?

The love affair Cheeseburger has for this guy is amazing.

come on Florio, that's low, LOL

The only "lame" duck is in your mirror Florio.

I am not a mcnabb hater....if this restructured deal gives him anymore upfront and guaranteed money someone please explain to me how that is a smart move by the eagles....he is inconsistent and he just said last week that he only wants to play a couple more years....so why in the hell give him more upfront money then as soon as the contract hits the peak within the next 2 years he retires...someone please explain how this is a wise decision

  13. tblitz25 says: June 12, 2009 7:07 AM

This is what happens when people who don't know much about football create sites. No knock on your hustle but your analysis show how little your really. The final two years of the contract McNabb was being paid as the No. 22 best QB his contract was outdated. It is easier to restructure a deal then to extend. And McNabb was the one who didnt want to extend he wanted to garuntee his true value ove the next two years and then engage in extension talks down road. But for now he is being paid like an elite QB. It has nothing to do with why not extend him now? They would not commit that type of money to a player they are not trying to extend.

  14. j42justin says: June 12, 2009 7:34 AM

The Eagles wanted to sign him to an extension. McNabb didn't want to sign an extension.

  15. smiley says: June 12, 2009 7:41 AM

I have to agree with Banner and Reid....McNabb is a class act and a good QB. Too good for those fans. Isn't he the best QB in franchise history? The guy gets no respect from the fanbase...without receivers. Hail!

  16. greggyd717 says: June 12, 2009 7:56 AM

Ok here's the deal. McNabb wanted his money guaranteed because he knows of his injury history and being his age, he wants to know that he is safe in terms of making money. These years are guaranteed and it's more money. In other words, McNabb either said "look, give me more guaranteed money the next 2 years or sign me to an extension."

I said this before, and I'll say it again, don't be surprised if McNabb takes his money and runs into retirement 2 years from now. He will not be a player that sticks around to make more money and he knows he has plenty of it. His kids will be school age by then and I am willing to bet that he would like to call it quits and spend time with the family after 2 more brutal years of football.

Further, as malblack said, Kevin Kolb's deal is up soon. Don't be surprised when the Eagles go into the QB heavy 2010 draft and find a way to get a Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford. They know Kolb isn't the answer and with 2 years left on his deal, the rookie (who will have more credentials than Kevin Kolb did coming out of Houston) will be able to sit for a year and learn from McNabb before taking the field in 2011 (McNabb's first year out of town and possibly out of the league).

  17. kinghill says: June 12, 2009 8:03 AM

The Eagles should be very good in 2009 because of the defense. Jim Johnson will be sorely missed, but look what Spags did for the G-Men after learning under Johnson. It's reasonable to assume another Johnson understudy can succeed. McNabb has been around long enough to know how to manage a game. If the offensive line lives up to its press he'll be fine. I still think we have no idea what Kolb can really do. Until he threw the int to Reed he was moving the team. If he starts a game and practices with all the starters he might be very capable. He certainly seems bright enough.

"What success? LOL. The Steelers and Patriots are laughing hysterically over Lurie’s statement."

The success that the Eagles have been the winningest franchise over the last 10 years moron. Go ahead, spit out the obvious, 'no ring' right?? I'd rather have no ring then live in Pittsburgh or New England or wherever you are from.

  19. eaglealan64 says: June 12, 2009 9:53 AM

McNabb for two years then it's the Kolb era - it's quite simple really. Yet again the Eagles FO prove they will improve your contract if you deserve it - a message that won't be lost on the locker room.

  20. Vox Veritas says: June 12, 2009 10:14 AM

"The Eagles wanted to sign him to an extension. McNabb didn’t want to sign an extension."

OK, so that tells you that he wants out pretty soon. So why throw more money at him?

"Yet again the Eagles FO prove they will improve your contract if you deserve it - a message that won’t be lost on the locker room. "

Same guys benched him last year. So he goes from benched to a big raise in a few short months. Assuming that he refused an extension, McNabb proved that his loyalty to the team doesn't run very deep. The Eagirls rewarded him for that. I wonder if THAT will be lost on the locker room?

  22. Vox Veritas says: June 12, 2009 10:29 AM

"The success that the Eagles have been the winningest franchise over the last 10 years moron."

The Steelers and Patriots have won more games than the Eagirls in the last 10 years. Honestly, where do you clueless Eagirl fanbois get this misinformation?

And then Romo cries on the field, passes out in the shower, TO gets the boot, and Jerruh gets another facelift.
