Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, who apparently has taken a break from watching Matt Leinart hump a heavy bag long enough to do some actual work, reports that the Eagles and quarterback Donovan McNabb have agreed to terms on a deal replacing the final two years of his current contract.
Per Glazer, McNabb gets a raise over the $19.2 million he already was due to earn, and guaranteed money for 2010.
The deal has not yet been extended.
Frankly, it makes no sense. Why give McNabb more money with no new years in return for it, especially with so many guys making so much less signed to deals they’d love to re-do?
We think this one will cause more problems than it solves in the locker room. As Brad Childress would say, “Stay tuned.”
UPDATE: Derrick Gunn of Comcast SportsNet is reporting the move, too.

Because it keeps McNabb happy? And, besides Sheldon Brown, no one in the locker room is likely to be angry about it, since all that happened is that McNabb’s pay was raised to a level closer than that to the highest paid QBs in the NFL.
We cut T.O. for a reason…

it makes no sense. why not extend him if you’re giving him a raise? get him cheap now because trying to sign him to a long term deal after his current contract expires will be harder since he’ll want more. the eagles will then lowball him citing age, wear and tear and itll be the beginning of the end.
TOLD YA FLORIO
regardless I’m sure #5 will find something to sulk about.
I’m fairly sure the last two years were voidable (possibly by McNabb) this likely changes that. So yeah he had leverage and plays a much more valuable position than the unspectacular Sheldon Brown. Brown a CB who’s never been to the pro bowl plays a position where they’re loaded at and have proven particularly adept at developing.
No one else has said a word about their contract despite Sheldon’s attempts to pull them in. Shawn basically told him to shut up about that. He although by the end of the year may see a new deal since he’s projected to be playing RT at this point and the new position will give them a way to give him a new deal.
Frankly, keeping the QB happy is not a bad investment, and paying an extra bonus for what might be fictional extra years might not be a great idea.
made sense to guarantee more money to mcnabb…….they probably want to wait and see what happens with the CBA before signing an extension
The deal makes complete sense if you know any of the background. When the initial deal was agreed upon, the understanding between the team and McNabb was that he would never see the last 2 years of the deal b/c the contract would be redone. This was based on the assumption that the last 2 years of McNabb’s contract would eat up a large chuck of the Birds cap in 2009 and 2010. The assumption was logical at the time because it was based on then current assumptions of how much the salary cap would rise over the life of the contract. At this point however, the salary cap has risen higher than anticipated. Moreover, not only do the last 2 years of McNabb’s contract not significantly impact the cap, the problem is McNabb is being underpaid, relative to his status as a top tier QB in the league. I believe his pay this year and next would place him as #10 highest paid QB but I’m not sure if that included initial signing bonus.
In the end, tonight’s deal is about both sides honoring the prior “understanding” reached during negotiations of the last contract. Other considerations include possible uncapped year next year and Kevin Kobb in the wings. This is why the Eagles are guaranteeing more money for the last 2 years of the deal rather than extending the deal. Extending the deal could create problems in the event of an uncapped year and would also upset Kevin Kobb b/c it means he’ll be riding the pine that much longer.
Sorry Florio, all of this is Eagles 101 to regular Philly fans. Ask your buddy Eskin (aka. Burger King).

I like Big Benn, and it kills me to admit that. I’d rank him pretty high. I still hope he eats it at least twice a year though,
@DP PHILA YES YES YES…..i now see the light. it’s no longer howard eskin…it’s B.K. Eskin….hahaha. maybe we should say separated at birth?
florio , you’d have been the punching bag if it had gotten you exposure. glazier punks you
Brady is NOT #1. One of the most overrated players in NFL history.
This is the same guy that got benched last season, right?
Its also the same guy who beat the Cowboys 44-3 before they kicked a field goal, Romo fainted, fired their coaches, cut T0, and collapsed their building.
Yeah the guy that took a 5-5-1 team to the NFC Championship. After earning the right to play in the postseason by defeating Dallas 44-6 the last game of the year. Yeah, that’s the guy!
“Its also the same guy who beat the Cowboys 44-3″
That’s worth 5+ million?
“Yeah the guy that took a 5-5-1 team to the NFC Championship.”
Oh, so he’s getting paid for what he did in the past. Gotcha.
Hey Vox, tell me what Romo has done to earn his 64 million dollar contract. Talk about a choker! The dude can’t even hold a football. He has not won ONE playoff game for the Cowboys. He likes to spend his time in Cabo instead of preparing for a big playoff game. Then, when they get beaten 44-6 by the Eagles, he says ” If losing a game is the worst thing to happen to me, I am good”. Yeah, that’s what you want to hear from a guy making 64million to WIN A FREAKING PLAYOFF GAME right after the biggest beatdown of the season by the McNabb and the EAGLES!!!!!! You my friend, are a loser.
Soooo if you want his rank take what the haters rank him at…then take where the homers rank him at..and hit the middle….looks about right
He’s certainly no Tony Romo! I mean, he wins playoff games.
DP PHILA – I’m not sure that calm, reasoned, fact-based analysis has any place on these types of website posting areas.
