Watching celebrities attempt to survive outside their normal element makes for compelling television.
When it happens, the producers usually are delighted.
We can’t imagine that “delight” would describe the feelings of anyone remotely connected to HBO’s Joe Buck Live right now, with the exception of anyone whose secret goal was to torpedo the entire effort.
For Artie Lange, his mission to destroy Buck’s non-sports career (and, possibly, his sports career, too) became obvious, both during the show that aired on the official HBO network and the extra segment that appeared on HBO.com.
In our view, the paddles now can be removed from Buck’s attempt to cross over from sports. The only remaining question is whether the folks at FOX will now regard Buck differently — or whether enough members of the FOX audience will do so to prompt the executives at FOX that it’s time to begin to groom someone else to be the network’s ubiquitous face of sports announcing.
Meanwhile, we assume that whoever booked Lange for the show already has cleaned out his or her desk. (And that’s no small task, since we also assume that Lange stopped by a took a dump on it as he was leaving.)
The best line actually came from Michael Irvin, who said in response to the Lange-Buck verbal awkwardness, “It’s refreshing to see white-on-white crime.”
If you don’t know what we’re talking about, our friends at Deadspin have posted the video of the “bonus” portion of the show.
Here’s the primary on-air segment:
[yt]OTRHf1quLnU[/yt]
This sounds painful… but I am going to have to watch anyway. Just like a car crash video.
Look Artie made this show interesting. The non-Artie segments were downright boring. How does Buck score an interview with Brett Favre and have it be that bad?! Good lord?! I love Buck on Fox games. I love Favre. Hell I love Artie. But this show was a train wreck and we should all be thanking Artie for making it.
The Overtime segment was brutal. Artie is a relentless ballbuster, and it seemed clear that Buck had never heard of him or any part of his act before he came on.
If the show never airs again, good riddance. Joe Buck is like the Ryan Seacrest of sports.
Umm…
WOW.
Like, “holy-sh*t WOW”.
Rule #1 in live anything – do NOT book someone from Stern’s crew.
Joe Buck is a tool
show was a snooze-fest without Artie
Florio, you’re right on…except you forgot to mention that Buck is a pussy
HBO should make a show for Artie. Then he could bring in Buck for his first guest.
That show absolutely blew. Favre, as usual, said absolutely nothing. The skits were dreadful. What was up with the telescope. Buck was deadly boring. Artie injected a little bit of life into that waste of an hour and everybody craps all over it. Good appearance.
Great appearance by Artie Lange! Joe Buck is a tool. This is the same guy who got upset at the imaginary mooning by Moss. Come on!
One of the greatest talk show appearances in recent memory.
I’m not a Lang fan at all, but he’s now my hero for what he said to Buck.
Arte killed. The show would have been unwatchable otherwise.
What did they expect? they booked a stern guy.
Artie was kinda going overboard but that show was dreadful. The thing that is good for Buck is that people are talking about it. Good P.R.
The Brett Favre part was so stupid and I hate that people are jumping on what he said as if it’s a big deal. Was all of America really thinking that he wasn’t thinking about coming back?
Florio, The show is on HBO, the network that airs Cat House, no ones getting fired. They love this publicity. If anything Artie just earned himself an hour comedy special. To speculate that FOX will fire Buck b/c of Artie Lange is ludicrous.
Booking Artie Lange on an *HBO* show means you are telling him he can be uncensored. He is going to take that opportunity and BE uncensored. This is not David Letterman, Conan O’Brien or the Best Damn Sports Show that he’s on, therefore unless he is told otherwise, he’s not going to tone down his act. None of what Lange did was malicious against Buck. He was doing his best to be controversial and entertaining. If HBO didn’t want that, they shouldn’t have booked him…or they should have at least told him from the get-go that even though it is a live uncensored show, they don’t want it to be raunchy. They did neither.
Until Artie was on, this show was downright dreadful. Just completely boring. Artie Lange was the only good part of the show. Cancel Buck, add Lange. Buck should stick to baseball only. He’s not in the least bit funny or entertaining. Unless there’s another great comedian on the next show….I’m done watching.
Artie made that show good, i’d like to see artie with or on a sports show. He’s like an r rated charles barkley.
Joe Buck supposedly is a huge Stern fan. If he didn’t know what Artie was going to do then he’s an idiot as well as bad host.
Amazing! Artie Lange was great.
Did you even read the Deadspin post or just watch the video? Granted, Joe Buck sucks at this but you just come across as an NBC hack slamming the competition. Lame post Florio you can do better.
Longtime fan of Howard Stern and was a fan of Artie for a time.
For those not familiar with him or the show, this a-hole’s most amazing accomplishment was managing to clock in at over 300 lbs for the last few years, despite being addicted to heroin. Truly, a loser’s loser.
But now that he is off the smack, he is a narcissistic vitriolic a-hole who just hurls unfunny insults at people, hijacks the Howard Stern Show (or Joe Buck Show) because he is so hell bent on being the center of attention. If I had never heard of the guy until last night, I might find him mildly amusing, but listening to this homophopic, racist degenerate on a daily basis, he has made the greatest radio show of all time nearly unlistenable lately.
Congrats Artie Lange…you’ve done the unthinkable…make me actually side with Joe Buck.
To put it kindly, Joe Buck does not have the right personality to host this type of show. It’s funny because even though his background is sports, he came off last night like one of the guys from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. And Lange pounced on that.
And the interview with Favre was a joke. Why do all of these interviewers always let him off the hook?
From the original posting: “…since we also assume that Lange stopped by a took a dump on it as he was leaving.”
You know, Florio, if you’re going to criticize someone else for making a mistake at their job, it’s kind of lame to make errors of your own when doing so. Especially now that you’ve hit the “big time.”
No one on that show should be on TV, it just goes to show how little talent there really is in America.
Don’t book someone from Stern’s crew? That was HILARIOUS!!!!!
ROFL
Artie Lange is great. I am a big Stern fan and he is one of the main reasons the how is still on the air. Joe Buck should be thanking him. Even as a sports announcer, he puts people to sleep. So, thank you Artie for creating a buzz around a soon to be axed show.
Joe Buck is awful. But Artie Lange qualifies for the douchebag hall of fame after that segment.
Buck is an idiot.
I still remember his ‘outrage’ when covering the Packers-Vikings game when Moss ‘mooned’ the crowd. He was acting like Moss had just killed 20,000 civilians in Iraq.
The producers must have told him to shut up during commercial, because that was the end of it.
This is the greatest thing i have ever seen. Joe was about 2 seconds from chewing his fingernails there for a second..lol Nothing like seeing that little ego maniac sweat. Hopefully good riddance.
Buck was at NFL on Sirius last week specifically asking where Howard’s studio was. He also reported he had read Artie Lange’s book cover to cover and listens to Stern all the time. So yes, he knew who he booked and what to expect from Artie. Suggesting otherwise is absurd.
Buck with Aikman for NFL coverage is great; Buck with McCarver for baseball is awful. Buck has to fill too much airtime for baseball and as a consequence, too much self-adoring drivel and smugness spills out.
His resume includes the Howard Stern Show. Whoever booked him won’t be finding another job anytime soon.
On the positive, at least it was funnier than the last comedy club act I went to.
hahah, Joe Buck probably wanted to strangle Artie..This show might not make it 3 more episodes
Seems like Jason Sudekis (surprisingly) could more than hold his own against Artie if he had to.
Whoever booked Artie Lang……seems like they were out for vengeance against Buck.
Artie did what they asked him to do. They knew exactly what they were getting. And you know what? It worked. Everyone is talking about the show, including here on a 24-7 365 football blog. It wouldn’t have even been a blip on the radar if Artie didn’t shake things up and make the show interesting.
just announced Joe Buck will be appearing on the sternshow tomorrow.
Joe and the boys at HBO knew exactly what they were getting as Joe himself listens to Howard Stern, has seen Artie’s DVDs, and has read his book. Thus, he can’t be surprised by anything that happened or was said. Buck had a boring, Ambien like sleep inducing program going until Artie was on. If his plan is to 20 year old pictures and call it entertaining his mother will be the only one being fulfilled.
The only time the audience was laughing/awake was with Artie busting everyone’s chops and was the only way the other guests were even palatable. I think the Buck/Aikman duo is one of the best for commentary on a game, but the only way I would watch that show again was if it was a Buck/Lange combo.
If their goal was to create rating, controversy, press coverage, etc. then they did a great job even though they are being quite hypocritical afterwards with their “shock” to all that happened. If the goal was a bore-fest, then they should be right on track when Artie isn’t there, and will reach new heights when it is canceled after the next episode.
I’m no Michael Irvin fan, but that was damn funny.
If theres any justice in this world, God will come down from the heavens and remove Buck from Fox’s football broadcasts. Even He thinks Joe Buck blows when it comes to football.
Buck is terrible. Definitely a tool.
I remember his coverage of the Vikings-Packers game when Moss ‘mooned’ the crowd at Lambeau. He was more ‘outraged’ by that than the thousands of deaths in Iraq. During the ensueing commercial break his producers must have told him to shut the hell up, because that was it.
Total tool. Complete fraud.
Stunned at the absolute flat-as-a-pancake vibe here. Joe Buck – assuming this show represents his best hosting and interviewing skills -was appalling. Absolutely appalling. Kids, little kids who have mikes shoved in their faces after baseball and football games, come up with better questions. There was no insight, no evidence of any kind of prep whatsoever, and totally NO HUMOR. There was no incisiveness, no zeroing in, NO PLANNING, no NOTHING!!!!! Tell ya what! They should have had MICHAEL STRAHAN doing the gig – he’d have gotten Favre involved, connected, present, in a second. He’d have made him laugh, loosened him up, and pinned him to the wall – and sent him home respecting the interviewer, MULLING what had happened, the good and the bad, and willing to return for another session.
The only thing that kept me awake was being fascinated by the awfulness of it. Good grief.
Buck has never heard of the Howard Stern show huh?
Heard this on stern this morning. The show was so bad. Artie might have gone over the top a little a few times, but his appearance made the show. Cancelled!!
Joe Buck is a big fan of the Stern show, and knows who Artie Lange is and what he’s about. Obviously Buck was nervous, but none the less, he got what he asked for. I’m sure the producers at HBO are not that upset, because NOBODY would be talking about Joe Buck live right now if it wasn’t for Artie.
Well Then……….
From Lange on the verge of ruining Joe’s career to Joe on the verge of ruining Joe’s career one thing is clear…..I will never willfully tune into another episode of that monstrosity.
Joe Buck is the worst announcer in sports today. The only reason why he’s even on TV is ’cause his dad was a legend
artie lange is a loser. hes so pathetic he has to try and ruin someone’s career on purpose because he looked into the mirror and saw what a fat piece of turd he became. why was he on there anyways? what does he know about sports? hes a giants fan anyways. no wonder hes such a loser.
Sometimes I think arti forgets that he’s not on Howard Stern’s show all the time. I’m with Florio though, who thought it’d be a good idea to just let Arti run loose in this kind of format. He’s attacked co-workers, literally on the show. He works on Howard Stern’s show because most of the time Howard knows how to pull him back before he goes all the way over the edge with his racy material due to his apparently real respect for Stern. Good gried, whoever booked him is looking for a new job or simply hates Joe Buck.
Also, I love how Buck starts the segment by saying that he’s “thrilled” to have these 3 guys on although he clearly has no clue who Arti is…classic, lol. For the fellow Stern fans, the” Arti is back on the drugs” conversation should continue, lol.
Wow that’s brutal. I can’t say as I’m a Joe Buck fan but his show got trashed.
Shockingly bad stuff. Artie whatsisname’s addition is only entertaining to the kind of losers who are entertained by fart jokes and can’t get through a sentence without dropping f-bombs two or three times. And the sappy hug? Yuck!
Buck joins Pat Sajak as one of the worst talk show hosts ever.
I don’t know anyone who thinks Joe Buck is anything special. He’s a smug prick. I don’t care if you do, but who in here LIKES that guy???
With total honesty I’d rather watch Ryan Seacrest interview these people. Buck thought he was so insightful and got NO respect from ANYONE – it wasn’t just Artie Lange. Well, okay, so Paul Rudd gave him respect. Regardless he does not have skills. For crying out loud I was watching on NFL Replay the Panthers v. Steelers game in 2008 and he’s consistently calling blitz when there’s a 4-man rush.
This program was an absolute train wreck and that was BEFORE Artie Lange’s tirades.
Here’s a question –
Remember when Joe Buck went crazy when Randy Moss “fake mooned” the Lambeau faithful? His exact words were “That was a disgusting act!”
Yet he claims to be a huge Stern / Lange fan, and had the vulgar comedian on his show – then acted like he was put off by Lange?
Moss’s “disgusting act” doesn’t seem so bad now, does it Bucky???
if that is all lange has, he just isnt funny.
THAT was AWESOME!!! I have always hated Joe Buck. He is a fake douche. . well a real douche but he comes off like an asshole. It was obvious that Artie Lang loved Jack Buck and, like so many of us, resent Joe Buck riding his father’s coattails into a “career”. HBO needs to pull the plug immediately!
Wow. As someone who can’t stand Joe Buck, but loves Artie Lange…this was the funniest shit ever.
I love that Buck was so irked, he actually warned Artie that he was close to going to his dark place. Every time I see a game called by Buck and Aikman, I go to my dark place.
Joe Buck is horrible and makes watching football games painfull and almost not worth it. Anything that gets him further away from sports and God willing out of the NFL broadcast booth is a good thing.
That has got to be the worst 7 minutes and 49 seconds of television that I have ever watched….
Haven’t respected Buck since he feigned disgust for Randy Moss’s simulated mooning at Lambeau. He feigned disgust because he thought that’s what the country wanted to hear. Never mind the fact that it was an innocuous act all in fun.
Is he going to chastise Lang for behavior that was 100x worse? Of course not …
Joe Buck is a freakin idiot. I can’t stand this arrogant asshole. He got what he deserved.
OK, I know this Artie dude is one of Howard Sterns lackies, but what warrants him to be on a talk show as a guest? He seems to be a bit of a douche.
I was wondering what Beth was doing hanging on that old woman, until she spoke and it turned out to be Howard. Hoo hoo hoo.
I invented talk radio, Robin. Hoo hoo hoo.
If we could just get a ‘Yes, Boss’ from Ba Ba Booey we could have called it night.
There’s a reason I don’t suscribe to Sirius and it’s not financial. Too bad my HBO turned into it for the night.
“For Artie Lange, his mission to destroy Buck’s non-sports career became obvious, both during the show that aired on the official HBO network and the extra segment that appeared on HBO.com.”
Oh really Florio? Artie was obviously trying to destroy Joe Buck’s career? You’re so dumb. Do you know that Buck is HUGE fan of the stern show and knows what Artie is all about? You don’t. You just like to go arouond and throw accusations like you are some kind of expert. You my friend are the TOOL!! You think they would’ve kept Artie around if they were that offended by him? BTW … the producers of the show personally told Artie to light it up if the show was boring …. which it was.
Next week on Joe Buck – the stand-up comedy of Michael Richards – please, no heckling.
Artie is off of smack so he smacks everyone else. A tragic figure and a lost soul. Joe Buck’s one and done.
You know, it almost seems like karma for him making Randy Moss out to be the worst person in the world for fake mooning the Packer fans, that, you know, actually moon opposing teams players. I haven’t even seen the clips, yet, but just from the reactions that I’ve heard and that are on this site, it seems like must watch TV, haha.
joe buck is a douchebag, and so is arte. it was funny, but at the same time, i was embarrased for both of them. Paul Rudd was funny. The thing about Joe Buck i hate is the whole Moss mooning fiasco. Doesnt he know that it is a joke w/ the Green Bay fans? The Green Bay fans who BEGGED the Packers to trade for him before the Pats stole him? You reap what you sow shithead.
Howard Stern and his cronies NEVER ruin a talkshow in its infancy.
Signed,
Magic Johnson
PS: This wasn’t awkward. Really, it wasn’t.

This is the greatest thing to ever happen.
Another good one from Michael Irvin?
Damn!
Did he get hit with a bolt of lightening or something?
Isn’t this exactly what most producers want?
Artie Lang has now incited talk about the show and has driven people to go to HBO.com and see what exactly happened. People now know about the show, when probably most of us did not even know it existed.
I have HBO and this is the first time that I have ever even heard of the Joe Buck Show.
I do not see how this is going to effect Joe Buck in any way. If anything it will drive more people to go see his show on HBO, just to see if something else off the cuff happens.
you want to be on the joe buck show?
nah i gotta change my sock draw
ha
Who is Artie Lange? Who cares, what a classless individual.
When was the last time Gumbel got any publicity on HBO? Who knows he has a show HBO?
This smells of a plant to me. Whoever booked Artie is getting a raise for the publicity. He isnt getting fired.
Joe Buck is boring. His show is going to stink. The look on Buck’s face when Artie first curses is priceless.
No announcer ruins a game more completely than Joe Buck. He’s obnoxious and arrogant. He got what he deserves and I hope Fox takes him off their game coverage.
I don’t subscribe to Sirius, I have no desire to pay to here Robin be a on air bobble head, agreeing with everything Stern says. And i have no idea who this Artie dude is…..But this was funny, when they were busting balls, Joe Buck, who i consider a pompous ass, got a few in, as far as HBO goes, it was a hell of alot more entertaing to watch than Gumbel acting like he is the savior of sports and journalism. Sure, it wasn’t politically correct, if i wanted that I’ll watch CNN. Buck should hire him as his Ed McMahon…….
Looks like Florrio has stepped on HBO’s toes….no video of Buck here.
Here’s another link to the video…
http://deadspin.com/5292467/watch-artie-lange-crap-all-over-joe-bucks-first-show
When they go to the booth during football broadcasts, just look at the way Joe Buck looks at Troy Aikman. It’s the unapologetic stare of a bro-mantic crush. I wouldn’t be surprised if all those weeks staring into Troy’s strong, compassionate eyes have made Joe Buck a little overly sensitive to the mocking of homosexuality?
Agreeed with Dietrich…this country lacks many things…save the Best country in the world crap please…our morals, culture and ideas of a “just” criminal and entertainment ‘ culture are sadly misguided.
WE wiped out analog but we wiped out decent television a long time ago.
Joe Buck sucks…at baseball he’s great…I don’t watch baseball.
On NFL football games, I have the Sunday Ticket and I don’t watch the games
Buck is working, unless I have to, then I mute he worthless azz.
If HBO show ONE MORE of his toolness Joe Buck, they are making a mistake.
Forget the guy who hired Lange for an HBO show. If anything he should be promoted. Whoever green lighted a live Joe Buck show should be the one to get canned. I’ve seen cardboard cut outs with more personality than him.
Personally, I think just about everyone would be “out of his element” when Artie Lange decides to act like that. Letterman, O’Brien, Kimmel. I wouldn’t give any one of them a shot at containing him if he’s intent on releasing a rampage like that. Not to say that he handled it well…
Honestly, whoever schedules Buck’s guests was probably fired last night. Or they should be. Scheduling Artie Lange on your first episode is stupid.
By the way, Florio.. This flap over Joe Buck and Artie Lange reminded me of something and I finally put my finger on it. Do you remember typing this?
“It was the kind of moment that, if it grows legs, could destroy Cramer’s television career.”
How’s Jim Cramer doing these days? Did Jon Stewart “destroy” his career? Didn’t think so.
Anyway, I wouldn’t put any nails in Joe Buck’s talk show coffin just yet. He got off to a horrible start, but it wasn’t like watching Magic Johnson. Buck can hold a conversation and do an intelligent interview. Not when he’s dealing with a badger like last night, but who could’ve handled Artie? At least, in a way that doesn’t make them look like an idiot.
Nobody is talking about this show if it wasn’t for Artie Lange. Joe Buck should be thanking him.
That made me miss Magic’s talk show. Maybe HBO should get Magic to be Buck’s band leader or something.
The stuff about the Cowboys was really funny. That being said, Artie has been a controversial talk show guest for a long time. I would bet the producers got exactly what the wanted. Aikman and Buck are unlistenable.
Joe Buck should stick to ball games because he looked like a fish out of water.
Artie was great though.
Joe Buck SUCKS. And it looks like everyone else around here agrees. Just look at all the comments saying how much of a prick he is that got rated 5. Randy Moss mooning Green Bay was the greatest moment ever in the Viking – Packer rivalry. The green bay fans routinely moon visiting teams buses outside the stadium, so when Moss caught the TD to beat the packers IN A PLAYOFF GAME, AT LAMBLO, he mooned them back. It wasnt disgusting it was awesome. Joe Buck couldnt see it for what it was cause he is such a prick. Also, is it just me or does Joe Buck do a lot of Viking games? Sure seems that way because everytime he is doing a game I mute the TV and turn on the radio play by play. Only announcer that I have to do that for.
Troy Aikman is suspect.
Joe Buck is a boner, if you were offend by this you could have changed the channel. It’s funny that between friend’s we bust balls like this, well if your any kind of man with a sense of humor you have. But when it happens on live TV people are outraged… hypocrisy at it’s finest!
