When we reported a couple of months ago that the Falcons were toying with the idea of signing center Jeremy Newberry due to concerns that center Todd McClure might hold out or retire due to displeasure with his contract, the news registered barely a ripple.
But when we mentioned the situation this week after Newberry signed with the Falcons, all of a sudden the stale, outdated comments about McClure became a big deal.
(We assume is has something to do with the peacock in the upper left corner of the page.)
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, McClure claims that he wasn’t contemplating retirement.
“No man, I’ve got a contract,” McClure said. “I’ve been here. I haven’t missed a day of OTAs — mini-camps or nothing. I’m as fired up as I’ve ever been about being a Falcon right now. This is an exciting season that we’ve got coming up.”
Regardless of what McClure says now, the reality is that the Falcons were sufficiently concerned about the situation to consider signing Newberry in April. The fact that they didn’t suggests that the situation resolved itself.
This time around, given Wednesday’s decision to cut Alex Stepanovich, it’s clear that Newberry was signed not to replace McClure, but to replace Stepanovich.

“Hi, I’m Todd McClure. You might remember me from such offensive lines as…”
They should can Todd McClure and sign Troy McClure, he loves birds and would fit in great with the Falcons.

“Hi, I’m Todd McClure. You may remember me from such NFL segments as ‘Touch My Ass, Matty Ice!’ and ‘Ben Dover: A Lineman’s Tale’”.
