Kosar Lobbied For A Belichick Return In 1999

As if the first decade of the reconstituted Browns hasn’t been sufficiently disappointed, former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar recently offered up a nugget that will make fans of the team feel even more miserable about the fortunes of the franchise.
“I went to Mr. [Al] Lerner and Carmen Policy in 1998 and told them when they were talking about who should be the head coach of the new franchise, that they should hire [Bill] Belichick.  They laughed at me.  They ridiculed me,” Kosar told Tony Rizzo of WKNR on Friday morning, per the Orange & Brown Report
Belichick coached the prior incarnation of the Browns to a 37-45 record from 1991 through 1995, before being fired.  A year after he was recommended to be the coach of the new Browns, Belichick became head coach of the Patriots.
Though it would be unrealistic to assume that the new Browns would have won three Super Bowls in four years under Belichick, it’s fairly safe to say they would have mustered more than one playoff game in ten.

It’s all speculation. What’s the point of the post?

  2. bshore21 says: Jun 19, 2009 10:18 PM

Kosar filed for bankruptcy today… that sucks.

I think this is all moot….Building an NFL franchise is about more than just one guy.You can make a good case that if not for Tom Brady,Scott Pioli,Charley Weis, and a fortunate call on a snowy field against the Raiders,Belichik might be just another unemployed football coach right now…

  4. wydok says: Jun 19, 2009 10:23 PM

Since Belichick failed with the Browns, what lead to the success he had with the Patriots? Was it that the ownership bought in to his game plan? Was it that he had better players? Better coaches? Was it that he just learned from his mistakes with the Browns?

  5. Simdogga77 says: Jun 19, 2009 10:26 PM

WOW! I’m so glad they laughed at Kosar and ridiculed him.
I mean he’s only one of the best coaches…..EVER!
Lerner and Policy are definately no Kraft that’s for sure.

Carmen Policy was an ego-maniac and it would never have worked out with a guy that has the personality as the Hoodie.
Instead of wondering why the Browns didn’t hire Belicheat, fans should wonder why in the hell Al Lerner hired Carmen Policy.

@1stngoal- Exactly! Look at all that Charlie Weis has achieved without Bill Bellichik. I guess I’m having a brain fart, what exactly has Charlie done? Oh, crap! I done forgot he’s been a joke on his own. Well that proves that Bernie was crazy right?

One might say that Belichick was a bit of a flop once he got out from the tuna umbrella. Maybe Notre Dame fires Weis after this year, and then turns into Pete Carroll somewhere else.

  12. Pastabelly says: Jun 19, 2009 10:51 PM

Belichick got Cleveland to the playoffs the year before he got fired. The next year, the team announced it was moving to Baltimore and it’s hard to blame Belichick for that team falling apart. As far as Belichick’s success in Foxboro goes, he learned from his mistakes in Cleveland and also works better with the local NE press (except Borges and more recently Tomase). Belichick also understood the salary cap and the economics of the game better than others by the time he got back to New England. Having Tom Brady hasn’t hurt either.

Growing up a Browns fan, Kosar, Slaughter and Matthews were my absolute favorite players. As I got older, I started to realize that Kosar’s an absolute nutjob who can barely put together a full thought. That’s why he was never brought into any franchise.
That’s being said, he’d still easily crack my Top 5 terrible athletes to have success at the NFL level.

  14. JoeSixPack says: Jun 19, 2009 11:23 PM

I’m sure Browns fans everywhere are now trying to delude and brainwash themselves into believing that it’s a good thing they didn’t get Belichick or a Lombardi in the last 10 years.

Indeed, after promoting Belichick to head coach, the Jets managed to play in 5 playoff games in ten years. Thus, the Browns could have been five times as successful.

Bring this up 11 years later, after belichick won 3 super bowls, won all 16 regular season games, coached the highest powered offense, drafted the biggest steal of the 2008 draft (Jerod mayo… who most thought was a reach at 10…), and tons of other stuff. Wow. How great must he be. Bernie, leave that stuff to the pros.
Quite frankly, I should suggest that everyone be hired by everybody and then go back and say “Look! I was right about them!” Or better yet, just say it anyways. Look how great Mike Tomlin has turned out. I mean, I so called that guy.
    See how easy that is?

Since they stopped, uhh, “cheating”, their record is way better than it was when they were, ahh, “cheating”.

Aaron Goldhammer wasn’t in the WKNR studio to ruin the interview so all went well.
    That was Bernie being Bernie.
He just shoots from the lip and is a really nice guy.
I think he was being honest.
Bill still would have gotten his AZZ kicked AGAIN here in Cleveland… but it’s a nice thought.

  21. dfins says: Jun 20, 2009 1:14 AM

Bill-d-chick is a cheater!! why would you want him for???
the only reason the league hasn’t asked the Patsies to return those superbowl trophies is because they don’t want to be embarrased by spygate episode..
    Once a cheater, always a cheater…

  22. Vox Veritas says: Jun 20, 2009 2:04 AM

Why is everybody hating on Kosar? He’s a nice guy and has a great football mind. He should be coaching or providing color commentary somewhere.

  23. enterusernamehere says: Jun 20, 2009 2:13 AM

Yeah right. I am sure Kosar was lobby hard for BB to be the head coach. After all the reason why he was fired in the first place was he had pissed off the owner by benching Kosar and replacing him with Vinny. I am sure Kosar was lobby for BB’s return so he could be benched.

  24. JimmySmith says: Jun 20, 2009 7:46 AM

    37-45 record, pre video tape,
    3 Superbowls with videotape
zero superbowls since Bellicheat got caught videotaping
those are the numbers and the numbers don’t lie.

  25. blackglass3 says: Jun 20, 2009 8:45 AM

If Belichick was “cheating” until 2007, than it is very safe to assume he was doing the same thing in Cleveland when he was head coach. If the “cheating” is what made him so sucessful, why didn’t the Browns win a couple of Super Bowls?
It’s amazing how so many people forget the Browns were most sports writers pick for AFC Champions and 3-1 before Art Modell leaked the team was moving in 1995.

  26. Deluxe says: Jun 20, 2009 8:48 AM

Based on David Halberstam’s biography of Belichick, Kosar was the biggest source of pressure to fire Belichick after Bill benched him. So a few years later he was lobbying to get him rehired after he successfully got him canned? Sounds as convincing as “I’ll pay you back next week.”

  27. JoeSixPack says: Jun 20, 2009 9:32 AM

Hi I’m a Browns Fan. It’s a good thing we never had Belichick. We don’t want to win football games.
Oh and Belichick can’t win without cheating either. Just look at his record. When he was cheating the best he could do was 14-2.
But when he stopped cheating in 2007 their record was 16-0.
    Hey – wait a second….

  28. praveen says: Jun 20, 2009 10:08 AM

Actually as mediocre as Belichick’s tenure was with Cleveland BY COMPARISON with his Pats tenure, he still got the old Browns into the playoffs. He just lacked a great QB.
It was a coach like Belichick who had the fortitude to go with Brady over Bledsoe even after Bledsoe got healthy. Some other coach would NOT have gotten a single SB with the Patriots. And when you think of the fact that NE won all of its SB by razor thin margins(not to mention some of their playoff games), take out the coach, and NE history is a lot different.
Let’s not forget the creative use of Troy Brown.
I say this, as a Steelers fan. I am glad Steelers dont have him to contend with in the AFC North.
Hiring Butch Davis was the biggest gift to Steelers fans. This is a guy who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in that playoff game where Maddox had a great 4th Q comeback.

Based on your username, I am going to go out on a limb…you’re between 14-19, you live in NY, NJ, or CT with mommy and whoever she is telling you your father is this week; and you’re bitter because your team gets smacked around by the Patriots regularly. You’re not a Giants fan because almost all of them actually have brain. So I am going to guess Jets fan or Bills fan.
If I was a Jets or Bills fan, I would do everything to discredit the Patriots out of pure jealousy as well, no matter how non sensical it is (after my latest suicide attempt, that is).
If Belichick’s videotaping would have helped, the Browns would have been 3 time SB Champions before they moved, and the Pats would have won 6 straight titles between 2000 – 2006.

Get over yourself, you know nothing loser. You aren’t fooling anyone but yourself.

No one is jealous of you bandwagoner Pats fans, since us real fans have stuck by our own teams regardless of wins and losses, while you bandwagon Pats chumps were nowhere to be found pre-2001. Pretty soon, the Pats will complete their inevitable decline, and you losers will be nowhere to be found once again. Belichick was caught cheating, paid a record fine for it and will ALWAYS be branded as a cheater. Nothing that you Pats fan chumps can ever say will change that. Not any of your lame insults attempting to diminish the posters who bring it up nor any of the pretend superiority that you all pretend to have over fans of other teams. Pats fans need to get a grip, you all aren’t even close to the best fans in the NFL, nor will you ever be. So grow up, losers.

I think Kosar is stretching the truth on this…. not one article ever mentioned Belicheat as a head coach in 1999…. so with Lerner dead and Carmen lost in his vineyard…Toni Grossi (the worst reporter on the earth) in todays sunday PD picked the Browns to go 8-8, but said its subject to change…. Hey, Tony….way to go out on a limb dude….. this guy is another reason the Browns suck cause he’s such a wishy washy, non resourceful reporter…. if you hear the questions he asks at a press conference, you’d wonder where his head is buried…. Grossi, are the browns gonna be good….. they could be…. but they might not be….. thats a Tony Grossi line…. that way later he can take credit either way…..waste of space in the PD if you ask many fans in Cleveland….. his views on TV suck…… he doesn’t have any pipeline into sources, and him and Mary Kay….. are experts at ripping of stories from the internet, then applying the anonymous source tag when they call it their story….. most articles they write can be found on the internet days before the PD publishes them. The big story is now we no why Kosar was never hired to help the Browns run anything……

  36. dave61 says: Jun 21, 2009 7:24 AM

Fire Aaron Goldhammer and send his rotten skills back to Denver….. the fans polled 80 to 20 that they hate him…………….. lol…… only in Cleveland would the sports talk radio show feature jockneys from our biggest rivals running shows and hanging up on Cleveland fans that spend money on the franchise…… Kenny Rhoda is another blowhart….they treat fans like they don’t no anything about Cleveland sports……. after watching Cleveland teams lose in every way possible, us fans, have scars to prove we no our teams well….. as far as the curse goes……. since 1964, the reason we never win anything is…. we have never had a great coach, manager, or gm…… the only chance is Danny Ferry, but I suspect that Mike Brown will be the Marty Schottenheimer of the Cavaliers and ruin Lebrons chance at a championship….. in both the Spurs finals, and with the Magic…. it was Brown that blew it….. and no ones saying it…. because thats the Cleveland way…..you could give Mike Brown Shaq….. and he’ll sit him on the bench…. you just watch and see…. name 1 adjustment the guy made during either series where you say….. man what a coach….. there were none….. and that is why Lebron stormed off the court….. he knew Brown blew it.

Well, not reaaaalllly. There was the little thing of going from 3-0 to 0-1 in the SuperBowl after being caught. NE had spent quite a bit of money on that team with Moss, Welker and some free agents that had come to NE to play for them for below market deals based on the team’s prior performance.
If I were a Patriots fan I’d remember that 16-0 is really 18-1. A little perspective is good for you. Belichick without a camcorder doesn’t equal Butch Davis, but it doesn’t equal Chuck Noll either.

BB should have pumped all their players with HGH instead. That is the rioght way to do it. Or pay off the refs, whichever you feel like.
Or maybe face the powerhouse Seahawks and Cardinals in the SB.

I am well aware that the Patriots lost the SB in 2007.. And truth be told, even though 2007 didn’t end the way I would have liked, I have come to embrace 16-0, and yes, 18-1. That season was unlike any other, was an incredible ride, and will likely never be duplicated by the Patriots or any other team.
As far as being 0-1 in the Super Bowl since getting “caught”… The Giants were a better team that day, and played better than the Rams, Panthers and Eagles did in those respective Super Bowls, and deserved to win. Give them their credit…credit that should also give Patriots for their success this decade.
