Cornwell Takes Aim At Jim Brown

After we posted last night a blurb regarding Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown’s contention that marijuana was involved in the events leading to Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth’s guilty plea for DUI manslaughter, we contacted Stallworth’s lawyer, David Cornwell, for a response.
Here’s what Cornwell — who addressed on Friday the criticism regarding Stallworth’s 30-day sentence — had to say:  “I have already said that we will address these matters privately and candidly with Commissioner Goodell.   Jim Brown, with his self-serving assertions of relevance and street ‘cred,’ and with his demonstrably inaccurate generalizations, just revealed his true colors.  Donte’s loving family is intimately involved in his life and they have been an invaluable pillar of support throughout this tragic ordeal.”
On one hand, Cornwell didn’t deny the contention that marijuana was involved.  On the other hand, Cornwell declined to comment on the situation.
So Brown’s contention remains unconfirmed.
But one thing is clear.  Cornwell doesn’t appreciate Brown’s remarks.  And Stallworth presumably doesn’t, either.

Who the hell cares…….Seems to me, as an employee of the Browns, the old man is laying the groundwork for the team to get rid of him, void contract etc.( I don’t know if they already have or not)..And his lawyer is doing what he is paid to do……This is simply spin doctoring by both sides….No, i will never agree with the sentence, but i know this……after all the comparisons laid out by the media with reference to Vick/Stallworth….I didn’t miss Vick in the NFL and i sure as hell won’t miss Stallworth……..

Neither Stallworth or his weasel lawyer have earned the right to even fart in Jim Brown’s presence. Right or wrong, Jim Brown can say whatever the F he wants to. Dante Stallworth killed a man while driving hammered drunk, and they have the audacity to complain that Jim Brown is accusing him of smoking weed? Who cares? You killed a guy, for f*ck’s sake!

I’ve never been a fan of Jim Brown but if it wasn’t true I’d think Cornwell would have just issued a strong denial instead of going into a rant of lawyerspeak.

jim brown needs to mind his own business and keep his mouth shut…he’s all up in donte’s kool-aid and don’t even know the flavor….

Jim Brown might be 70 something but he could still twist Donte Stallworth and his attorney into a pretzel if he wanted. So they had better be careful.

someone needs to mentor jim brown and tell him to live his own life and not impose his beliefs on people he doesnt know.theres been countless numbers of good people from great familys of all colors who made grave mistakes in thier lives.its called life and learning as we grow.stallworth has alot to live with now. his victims do too.

  7. BillyShears says: Jun 20, 2009 1:32 PM

Jim Brown has earned the right to say whatever the f**k he wants about whatever he wants.
All you weak sisters defending Donte and his family. If he was raised right he wouldn’t be in the substance abuse program to begin with, or if he had any self control.
If he didn’t play in the NFL his sorry backside would be in an orange jumpsuit at some county facility. He took a mans life, come’on people.

The wife beating Jim Brown really should take care of his own house.
He did beat up another girl in the 80′s blaming it on a Sado Masochism
session. Having said that I believe he’s most likely correct about Donte’
doing weed. No doubt Donte’ was still high when he told police that he
flashed his high beams when he saw Reyes crossing the street. Well
what about placing your foot on the brakes. That’s where the Marijuana
comes into play. Stallworth’s family is behind him! Now that Donte’ will
not ever legally be able to drive his Mom will be driving the Bentley.

Jim Brown “earned” the right to say anything he wants? Why? Because he could carry a football? What an ignorant country this has become

  10. DCViking says: Jun 20, 2009 1:59 PM

Jim Brown should worry about himself…this is the man who beat his wife / girlfriend, and didn’t understand why he should go to jail.
Plus, he was the “advisor” to Mo Clarrett — he didn’t seem to have any problems with Mo’s multiple felonies. Maybe because Mo was a running back…

    Perfect!!

What the hell did Jim Brown ever do to earn the right to comment on someone else’s personal plight? Since when does a convicted Wife beater ex con hold the moral high ground on ANY matter that concerns brushes with the law? The guy is the textbook definition of an opportunistic scumbag. He’s a hypocrite of epic proportions and currently holds the title of the NFL’s version of Jesse Jackson. What Stallworth did was inexcusable but Jim Brown is about the last guy who should be giving advice to anyone on how to lead their lives.

Oh, give us a break. We all now how this goes.
    Here’s what Donte’s lawyer said:
“I have already said that we will address these matters privately and candidly with Commissioner Goodell. Jim Brown, with his self-serving assertions of relevance and street ‘cred,’ and with his demonstrably inaccurate generalizations, just revealed his true colors.”
…And here’s the transalation of what Donte’s lawyer *actually means*:
“Shit. Jim Brown found out that Donte was high as a kite at 7am and now I have to go apeshit trying to defend this. It really sucks that Brown had to bring the pot thing into this when I thought we had successfully swept *that* part under the rug. Hmmm, how do I spin this- I know, I’ll infer that Brown is becoming a delusional egomaniac in his old age. Yeah, that’s the ticket…”

Actually Jim Brown has been politically and socially active for years and has proved that he actually has half a brain. He was is a sports and social icon. And yup, he beat up his wife. That doesn’t disqualify him from being able to talk about this situation and how it affects the football team he played for his entire career (save the crap about the real Browns now being the Ravens).
In fact, since he’s been in self-made trouble before, paid the price, admitted his mistakes, and made himself a better person, he’s earned the right even more so to say whatever the F he wants.
So please, because I have a bleeping opinion you don’t like, save the ‘ignorant’ crap. I won’t accuse you of being ignorant, just an a$$hole.

The reason Jim Brown had to spend time in jail is that he refused counseling for the domestics abuse charge, so the judge had no other alternative. He also tried to have the judge disqualified for “bias” — why because she had something against guys who beat up their wives?
Doesn’t sound like somebody who takes responsibility for their own actions is looking to better themselves and move forward.

  18. JoeSixPack says: Jun 20, 2009 4:51 PM

Heck – JB might have done Stallworth a favor – inadvertantly reminding everyone about how he, Jim Brown, raped and beat women and, if I recall correctly, didn’t do any jailtime for it.
At least Stallworth had the good sense to admit guilt and take his medicine – unlike JB.
People had largely forgotten about this miscreant Jim Brown until he opened his big mouth.

When Jim Brown talks… people listen. He’s earned that so call ‘cred’.
Cornwell is a lawyer. Doesn’t get much lower than that Florio.

Open your pie-hole in his presence and it would be just about the last thing you’d ever do.

So that makes him wiser and smarter?
I work with whole bunch of armed foces members who could take me and Jim Brown (in his prime) out simultaneously and not get any on themselves — that fact, in and of itself, doesn’t make them any smarter than anyone else.
    Get a clue.

Jim Brown needs to go back to whispering in Randy Lerner’s ear and ruining the Browns. He’s doing too good a job at that to take on any more projects.

Ain’t that the truth. His wife and ex-girl friend say the same thing.

  24. Raiders757 says: Jun 21, 2009 4:53 AM

This is just completely biased. The man got drunk, and smoking marijuana would have had a hell of a lot less to do with what happened. Anyone who’s smoked it before, can tell you that. This entire piece screams of right wing anti-marijuana propaganda bullshit. I don’t even smoke the crap, but to blame anything other than drinking on this sad incident, is to ignore the truth.
We shouldn’t even blame the alcohol. The only blame in life, can only be put on one’s self. To blame the crutches in our lives for the mistakes we make, is weak. You have to learn from your mistakes. We are not perfect. In the end, being a dumb shit is more to blame than anything else.

  25. mikeylikesmizzou63 says: Jun 21, 2009 9:59 PM

raiders757 what the hell is wrong with you? you bounced all over the place there, blame this, blame that, but never taking any responsibility for anything. you’re obviously an obamacrat.
iheartjesus … way to go dude … use all those cuss words … good example!

  26. burkester says: Jun 22, 2009 5:47 PM

I don’t see why Jim Brown can’t comment. The man is a legend and he still represents the Cleveland Browns. Stallworth is an idiot who made a stupid mistake. Brown is trying to keep a good word for the team that made him a legend.

  27. burkester says: Jun 22, 2009 5:54 PM

Why would Jim Brown’s comments NOT matter? The man is a legend and he represents the Cleveland Browns. If he has inside info., let him tell it! Stallworth is bringing a bad rep to the Browns and Jim is just trying to fend off the bad rep! Lay off the legend!

Jim Brown needs to retire and shut the hell up!!!
