Favre Already Under Contract With Vikings?

As we prepare to join the NBC family, we’re making a conscious effort to get back to our roots.
Sure, we spend a lot of time commenting on news either broken by others or announced by the teams or the league.  But we built our following primarily because we can get stuff that others don’t have — and because we can (and will) post rumors, without adhering to the two-source nonsense that paralyzes the flow of information about sports.
We caught wind this morning of a tip from a very unusual source.  A member of the military — an officer serving in Afghanistan — contacted us with two eyebrow-raising-nuggets that had made their way to him on the other side of the globe, from credible sources.
We pondered using it even without corroboration under the thinking that, if a guy in harm’s way would get a thrill by fooling us into using a Bradshaw-Is-Dead-style rumor, then we’d be glad to give him that thrill in exchange for the sacrifices he’s making for the rest of us.
Because, however, we’ll soon be working with a legitimate media organization (or, as the case may be, undermining its legitimacy), we decided to poke around a bit.
After hitting a dead end, we got in touch with a source who would know the truth.  The source explained that no information could be given, adding “I will not deny it either, I will leave it at that.”
So with that extended preface (you can wake up now, by the way), let’s get to the meat.
The rumor that the source would neither confirm nor deny is that the Vikings already have signed Brett Favre, and that the team and Favre are waiting to release the news.
If accurate, this means that the Vikings have a signed contract that they have yet to submit to the league office.  Setting aside for now the question of whether league rules permit such tactics, it puts into perspective recent developments such as Favre’s use of “we” when discussing the matter with Artie Lange’s biatch, the visit by a Vikings trainer to Favre to check on his arm, and reports that coach Brad Childress wanted to see Favre participate in some of the offseason workouts.
These details all make much more sense if Favre already is a member of the team.
The other bit of information, which we also posed to the source who declined to confirm or deny the rumor, is that the Vikings already have green-lighted the production by Reebok of purple jerseys bearing the number 4 — and the five-letter name that isn’t pronounced like it’s spelled.
None of this news should be regarded as earth shattering, but it’s the clearest sign yet that, come early 2010, Favre will be conducting his third annual retirement press conference.

There is no way this story can be true as Bob_Nelson has assured everyone that the Brett Farve would never sign with the Vikings, or that the Vikings will botch the contract.
And we all know that Bob_ is never wrong…

Smokescreen! What this really means is John David Booty (#4) is going to be the starter!!! OR, if Favre does come, then this would be the 2nd attempt at Booty’s #4, as Rosenfels tried unsuccessfully to get it when he joined the Vikes. Interesting what all this # crunching and ego bumping will do to QB team chemistry. Not only will Rosenfels be bumped from starting, but the new starter will successfully get his old #(4), something he couldn’t do.
Perhaps in the end this will make the decision of who is the odd man out easier on Childress, if Booty refuses to give up #4, then he will be cut/traded! Ha. Gotta love it.
Future bit: Vikes go for Billy Volek to compete for starting gig after Favre is gone.

There is NO way PFT could undermine the “legitimacy” of NBC any further. PFT could only help. Calling NBC a “legitimate media organization” is like calling Keith Olbermann a rational thinking commentator and not an ignorant douchebag. I’m sure Chris Matthews got a thrill up his leg when he learned of the PFT/NBC deal.

  14. jburton14 says: Jun 21, 2009 3:58 PM

This is starting to sound like TO In Buffalo…. I wonder how Booty feels about all those #4 Farve jerseys being printed considering that is his number. I”m sure in the end he will give it up for some cash but it might have been nice of them to ask. Maybe Childress is trying to build some chemistry between sage, tavaris and booty… since now Booty can be apart of the Farve is gonna screw you club.

  15. RyanHarris says: Jun 21, 2009 4:00 PM

I highly doubt that a contract is actually in place, however I would believe that all parties have their ducks in a row.
Im sure the Vikes already have a contract negotiated & ready for Brett and Bus to sign, Im sure Reebok has their production team ready, and Im sure the Minny Police Department already has a suicide watch on Sagevares RosenJacks.
To steal a realtor term these are all “subject to” Favre being able to throw. The day he proves he can still throw (INTS??), is the same day that all of these events will be sent in motion.

  16. cramjones says: Jun 21, 2009 4:05 PM

Brad Childress is fortunate he has garbage for his other QB’s. If he had a Cutler on his roster, he’d be the next Josh McDaniels. If this is true, he’s lied directly to his supposed “two headed monster” Sage and Tarvaris.
Wow. Favre never was a good decision maker as witnessed by being the all-time interception leader. Good luck in Minnesota. He’ll need it.

  23. We_Miss_You_Dan says: Jun 21, 2009 4:26 PM

It would be really nice if this were true, because then we could stop with the speculation. If it is true, I wish they would release it. I anticipate watching the press conference will be like releasing a tourniquet from around my neck. Finally, we’ll be able to stop beating the dead horse that is Favre’s second annual unretirement.

  32. BarnyardBerrianSucks says: Jun 21, 2009 4:54 PM

This wouldn’t surprise me at all. Keep in mind, the Vikings can’t sell out their own home games, even in a bandwagon situation. They need to announce Favre signing at a time that coincides with the ticket office being open, so they can beg, hope and pray that people will buy tickets.
It’s going to be hilarious to see Vikings fans have to flip the switch from talking for 16 years about how Brett Favre is “overrated and sucks” to Brett Favre is awesome and will take us to the Super Bowl. Funny how that works….

  36. packerswin says: Jun 21, 2009 5:15 PM

The best part of all this will be that the Vikings think Favre is the missing piece to the Super Bowl, yet they won’t even come close, if they make the playoffs at all they will lose in the 1st round. I guarentee that the Packers will go farther in the post season than the Vikings will this season.

  37. murhagh says: Jun 21, 2009 5:32 PM

Say what you want about Favre. However, he could roll out their in a wheelchair and be twice the QB, booty, sage, or jackson could.

  38. Elgar says: Jun 21, 2009 5:55 PM

    Favre is not under contract.
However, those who will want to die when Favre comes back again should make their funeral arrangements now, because those cemeteries will be filling up soon, and you’ll want to get yourself a good spot. Eternity is a very bad time to have a poor location.
In a related note, it is not jerseys but the “Favre Killed Me” souvenir tombstones which have been approved for their mass production run.

On the Joe Buck Show last week on HBO, which was terrible, Favre said the Vikings asked him to come to the OTA’s and he declined.
Why would a team ask a player to attend team activities that will have confidential team information all around them if they were not already under contract? Favre has already signed with the Vikings and will be in camp come August…

  45. Treez says: Jun 21, 2009 7:12 PM

When the truth finally slithers out, he can finally remove the crown of thorns he presently has perched on his ego inflated noggin.

Favre knows it, the Vikings know it, the Bears and Lions know it, and you can be damn sure Ted Thompson and the Packers know it! Pick your poison, try to stop Peterson Favre throws for 350,try and stop Favre and Peterson goes for 250! Sorry people but you`ll be seeing Favre celebrating every week on the highlight reels. I live in Minneapolis and that will never happen! The fans here are as fairweather as they come, but even that didn’t seem to be enough last year to sellout home games, including their first home playoff game in 10 years! Wilf already reneged on his deal to buy up land downtown from the Star Tribune. He knows his team is moving and it’s just a matter of time. Here’s to the LA Vikings in 2012!!!

    waffle waffle waffle
favre will be behind center, clink will be behind favre, and ziggy will be behind clink. I bet you’re looking forward to that lineup.
surrounded by the most talent in the league? get out. AD is great, but your WR’s and TE are a group of clowns. it actually makes me laugh when viking fans overhype the ability of the entire offense, thinking that his talent alone is what makes the other players, making the whole unit just unstoppable. well guess what, your offense was/is just as good as any other offense this decade with a 1,800 yard back. LT hasn’t won shit, alexander hasn’t won shit, ahman green hasn’t won shit, ricky williams hasn’t won shit, tiki didn’t win shit, LJ will never win shit.
just because you desperately overpaid for berrian in thinking he was the answer to your offensive woes doesn’t mean he is any good,.far from it actually. If favre can teach that offense, he could teach Lassie to run the same go routes that berrian only knows how to run, and Lassie would probably be more effective.

  59. PeterGundrum says: Jun 21, 2009 11:13 PM

  61. sand0789 says: Jun 22, 2009 8:53 AM

I love how people think Farve will flop in MN because of his career interception totals.
He won’t be throwing many balls this season because of how the Vikings play football. They call mostly running plays. When he does throw, it will usually be into 8 man fronts because that is how teams play the Vikings. So there won’t be many players cutting under pass routes because most of them will be right near the line of scrimmage worried about the run game. And finally, Chilly is all about effiency and not throwing picks. Some of that is bound to rub off and the play calling will still be very conservative.
Gus Frerotte was successful at QB last season finishing with a 118 rating on the year. He is older and not as good as Brett Farve. Buckle up.

Why can’t you just LOVE football in general? If you were a FOOTBALL FAN and not just a HOMER, you might relish the idea of kicking his Viking ass twice this year. Or maybe he get’s his revenge. Either way, doesn’t it make things more interesting?
I’m not sure how I would feel if I were a Packer fan. BUT maybe have a little bit more faith in your team. They should have won the division last year….bad defense and even worse special teams decided that. Who cares if a confused hof player signs with a rival…if your team is up to task it should only make things more interesting.

Sorry, unphair… I never bowed down and worshipped Favre. Go ahead and search the archives. Anyway, it’s not that he’s playing that bothers me. It’s that he can’t make up his mind once and for all, and it’s that he thinks he was wronged by the Packers. He created this whole situation himself.
@We_Miss_You_Dan: I’d like to say I’ve never jumped the gun and been wrong about it before. Sadly, it’s actually happened many times. No harm, no foul.

So…I guess this was right. And all the tards who whined that this was bullshit feel pretty dumb now.
Which is good, because reading the comments here made me feel dumb too.
