While one Roy Williams tries to push reset on his career in Cincinnati, the receiver in Dallas is trying something a little different this offseason.
He’s lifting weights.
Peter King relays the head-scratching news in his MMQB column.
“I’m serious,” an acquaintance of Williams told King. “Roy never lifted before. Now that he has, and now that he’s serious about making himself a great football player, especially with T.O. gone, I think he’s really going to have a good year.”
Lions fans should feel free to throw something against the wall after reading that quote.
Williams’ acquaintance was probably trying to pump up the wideout’s ’09 prospects, but the admission only supports the widespread whispers about the former Longhorn’s lax work habits.
If nothing else, the man Williams is trying to replace always kept up with his workouts.

Heard he’s already benching 110.
Two people that I’m tired of this summer. Ochocinco and Roy Williams.
Both had marginal to poor performances last season. Both are all over the news for some reason.
Nate Washington had a better year than both of them…..on a running team….as the third receiver….
The dude sure looks like he lifts weights to me
wow thats ridiculous, we all spend years in the gym to never even come close to level of athleticism these guys are at… and they take it for granted. those million dollar facilities, numerous coaches/nutritionists, and the guy wont even put in time to make himself the best player he could be. what else was he doing in the offseason???? sprints and routes get boring after awhile, I guess just sat on his ass like everyone else in detroit.
Surprising that he didn’t lift before. I know he has a goal of adding muscle and dropping his weight to 212, his playing weight at UT and his first year in the pros.
I think he was suffering from the loss of motivation that accompanies playing for a perennially losing team (sorry Detroit fans). I believe he weighed close to 230 when he first came to Dallas in the middle of the season last year (which could account for the decline in production, he was really a small TE, not a WR).
I think he is going to have a good year. I doubt he’ll put up TO numbers, but he isn’t the deep threat TO was. He’s more like a bigger Michael Irvin, He and Romo started clicking on that famous AIkman/Irvin slant pass the last few days of the recent mini-camp. Frankly, they had better be clicking on that play because it is the way they will get teams to back off the 7 man blitzes that were so successful late last season. A few big gains or TDs from the slant against the blitz and teams will back off.
I figure Williams will be good for 1000 yds & 6-8 TDs, with Martellus Bennett and Felix Jones supplying the rest of the ‘TO TD production’ (and hopefully they’ll get more of their TDs against the Giants & Eagles rather than the 49′ers & Seahawks, like ‘The Player’ did last year).
Matt Millen, thought lifting a fork to his fat face was a workout, so he passed that on to the coaches
Funny, he always looked cut to me.
You can still gain muscle from natural lifting. (Push-ups, Sit-Ups, Pull-Ups). But I never thought you could get THAT much from it.
He could lift enough weights to look like David Boston and he still won’t match Owens’ production. The cowboys need to concentrate on running the ball this year. But we all know that their idiot coach Wade Phillips won’t do the “smart” thing. If the Cowboys use Felix Jones and Barber properly, they’ll make the playoffs. If not, they’ll be 7-9.
He’s actually trying to lift while taking steriods this time.
think the most amazing thing I’ve heard in the past month, and I’ve confirmed it with someone close to Roy Williams, is that the Dallas receiver was never on a consistent weightlifting program in his life before this off-season, when he got after it at Valley Ranch.
—————————–
Translation: He never had a set weightlifting schedule in Detroit. Doesn’t mean that he’s never lifted a weight in his life. It’s probably never been a point of emphasis in Detroit, and now that it is, he’s lifting “seriously”. Great groundbreaking story.
Thanks for the draft picks you POS! I’ll take Pettigrew and Delmas over your alligator arms any day.
PS – CJ doesn’t miss you.
Roy Who?
I don’t even need to open the YouTube link and I already know who the video is of and what he’s doing.
I aint mad atcha Roy.
Maybe some of you clowns missed the games- but Roy never had a single pass hit him in stride (in Detroit).
Maybe a few from Kitna, but don’t worry- the next play Backus would let the DE fly by and sack all chances of advancement.
Ring Ring…. Ring Ring….
He has yet to prove anything in the NFL. Why are we even talking about this guy?
i know that R W is no desean jackson or k curtis or even kendre oops i ment hank basket….hahahhaha
all you loser egirl crack me up, what losers! R W will match t o numbers…..you idiots listen to waaay too much 610 you retards start to believe your own idiotic bull shit for real ! Mcflab will flop as usual westbroke will get hurt by game six and more importantly you losers are without your best player by far…..j johnson…. Oh yea Mcdermit/stewart will take over the D…hahahahahahahahaha good luck with that one ! Looks like a 7-9 season at best… At least if not anything else i can always get a good laugh at the expense of you egirls..
Unless he starts spotting weights for Romo, he still won’t get any balls thrown is way. The only people Tony throws balls to are Witten and Jessica. Not sure who the better catcher is.
Let’s see how good he is facing a double team from now on. Its a lot harder when you have a nobody as your #2 wideout. If he works real hard he might be able to eclipse Hank Baskett’s numbers this year. Too bad he is only our #5 wideout.
There’s running backs who don’t lift weights…that’s not the only way to get strength and power.
If Roy Williams wanted to start picking up heavy weights, he’d start hitting on Romo’s girlfriend. Zing!
As a Lions fan my frustration is tempered by the 1st, 3rd, and 6th round picks. They can have him. Megatron will dominate.
Roy e is NOT renowned for work ethic.
He quit baseball because he was afraid of being hit by pitches. Alligator arms, anyone?
After kitna hit the bench, any dan-o pass over the middle to roy e was not caught, but roy e sure did flail the arms like it was all dan-o’s fault.
Another diva ready to blossom!
it’s hard to get better when “players” come to Detroit to rest. Good riddance to that drive killer.
Not surprising when you compare his body to guys like TO, Plax, Boldin, etc. He’s just not as lean, and that’s a bad thing for a WR.
TorontoChamp,
No way to tell which is the better catcher, but Witten seems more likely to give Romo a reacharound.
