Raiders' Huff Could Be Cut If He Doesn't Win Starting Job

Oakland Raiders safety Michael Huff might not want to get too attached to his helmet, shoulder pads and roster spot, which has reportedly become tenuous.
Huff lost his starting job last season to Hiram Eugene. And the former No. 7 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft could find himself on the chopping block if he doesn’t reclaim a starting job this season, according to Pro Football Weekly.
Huff has only intercepted one career pass in three seasons and 39 starts.
Citing sources, the report stated that Raiders owner Al Davis’ patience is wearing thin, adding that Huff “has yet to show signs of figuring things out this offseason.”
Huff is playing under a six-year, $43 million contract that included $16 million in guaranteed money.
Huff, 26, was a consensus All-American at the University of Texas who won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back.

Another solid draft pick by the raiders!!!!

Just a minor blemish in the Raiders Organization’s accomplished draft record.

  5. INVAIDUH says: Jun 22, 2009 7:40 PM

The guy they were “supposed” to select (Leinart) isn’t doing much better.

  6. Fredex says: Jun 22, 2009 7:44 PM

Pretty rough to draft a safety that high and have him flame out.
When I’ve watched Raiders games, I’ve never really noticed him. I don’t know if that’s good or bad.

Me being a Texas alumn, I was never really impressed with Huff’s play when I saw him in college. I don’t remember him making plays to justify him being picked 7th overall (just a big play at the Rose Bowl).

  8. raiders117 says: Jun 22, 2009 7:59 PM

At least he isn’t the worst top-10 pick from Texas in that draft.

  9. jmclarkent says: Jun 22, 2009 8:00 PM

I think he’d be a better fit as a zone safety; he just can’t cut it in a traditional system.

If you ever wanted to hear how Raider fans defended this pick three years ago, look at the comments on a recent DHBey post and switch in the name Huff. Ya Al, it was actually a great pick but DHBey – oops, I mean Huff is too stupid to pick up the system.

Nothing like naming yourself after a bad QB..
I’ll be sure to listen to your vast wisdom.

I was so pissed when Oakland snagged him at #7 before Buffalo picked at #8. Now, I’m glad Buffalo got “stuck” with Donte Whitner.
Although Whitner has less career INT’s (2) than the guy I really wanted Buffalo to draft (Haloti Ngata).

His lack of any production on one of the worst teams in the NFL probably doesn’t coincide with the fact that UT players are no better than soft serve cones at Dairy Queen lining up in the NFL. Seriously, give me the name of a UT top-15 pick who actually is proving his worth in the NFL today. Those guys have the reputation of sucking on Ring Pops all day while Mack Brown gives them pedicures. And is that not true? Texas dominates the Big 12, but they turn out a bunch of clown acts when it comes to being successful at the next level. Leonard Davis was a lollipop in AZ where he couldn’t hack it, Mike Williams, Quentin Jammer, Cedric Benson, VY, & this shed. UT is lucky to have Derrick Johnson, Ross, and Griffin to pick-up some of the overhyped non-success that those aforementioned failed to achieve. Texas is a joke when it comes to producing NFL caliber players.

According to Al … it was Shell who wanted Huff.

I swear Michael Huff was supposed to be better than Michael Griffin at Texas. Wow. That’s shocking considering that he was taken so high. Huff has some talent but he’s been really disappointing. I thought Huff would at least become a good safety maybe a pro bowl caliber safety in Oakland. Ouch. Good luck Raiders,
    GO COLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huff(ing) is bad for you anyway.

When will NFL teams realize that they need to avoid Texas graduates in the draft? The majority of longhorn first round picks have been overwhelming busts!

  22. blackglass3 says: Jun 22, 2009 9:52 PM

Raider castoffs tend to play well in New England…

  23. spanky07 says: Jun 22, 2009 10:04 PM

And yet….the fans will keep paying…the players will keep getting richer for doing nothing and nearly all teams will have a chance making the playoffs in the last week of the season….this is football in 2009.

  24. 0tt0 says: Jun 22, 2009 10:06 PM

the guy they were supposed to pick was ngata…..and that would have solved the runD problems…..i would have hated to watch leinart in silver and black

  25. ncoolong says: Jun 22, 2009 10:26 PM

I’m not a pro or anti Texas fan, but they aren’t all busts. Casey Hampton has done pretty damn well, and I think Michael Griffin will be one of the best safeties in the game this coming season.
Plus, let’s take this for what it is…an “anonymous” source mentioned this to PFW in an effort to shake Huff up and motivate him. They ran with the story cuz it’ll get us talking about it. There’s no way they’re going to cut a top-10 draft pick after three seasons and a training camp.

  26. CANNIBAL says: Jun 22, 2009 10:46 PM

otto…Naa.. Look back… Ngata was a side note to Leinart.
Huff was a surprise but not a reach.

  27. Slow Joe says: Jun 22, 2009 10:53 PM

    Rookie cap.

  28. Jampa says: Jun 23, 2009 12:26 AM

The lesson is: no matter who the raiders take in the draft, if the player turns out to be good no one mentions it, but if the players turns into a bust, everyone is quick to point the finger at Al Davis…
I remember the “experts” being optimist with no-miss prospectas like gallery, grove and huff…

Raiders messed up in moving him to Safety. He’s a Corner…
    ============================================================
I’ve been saying this since he was drafted, dude is a natural corner. He’s not a burner but neither is Namdi,
With the Raiders almost always in man, I’d throw him out there in the Dime and or Nickel, there’s nothing to lose.

  30. Kenny05 says: Jun 23, 2009 6:58 AM

Based on NFL standards Huff’s salary is low, very low, not to keep him for one more season under contract. Huff and Russell make easy targets for those out there who love to bash the Raiders endlessly about the draft. Michael has to prove himself like every other player. That’s why the NFL is such an elite club. By the way, why don’t other teams get the same scrutiny on draft day as the Raiders? DHB has already been treated the same way and training camp hasn’t started yet.

    “The University of Texas”
Why do I keep seeing this university in relation to all the hopeless tools of late who just don’t seem to get it? Is there something in the water or is Mack Brown really the best coddler this side of Dr. Spock?
