Davis Arrest A Case Of Wrong Identity?

There are conflicting stories regarding whether Dolphins rookie cornerback Vontae Davis was arrested in Champaign, IL on June 9.  The Daily Illini says he was, while Davis and the Dolphins say that it's impossible.

They may both be right.

Someone carrying an ID matching Davis' full name (Vontae O. Davis) and home address in Washington, D.C. was arrested, according to records from the Clerk of the Circuit Court in Champaign County.

Davis just says that person wasn't him.  The first-round pick says he hasn't been in Champaign since February, although his wallet was stolen before he left school to enter the NFL Draft.  Davis theorizes that someone was impersonating him.

The Dolphins can confirm he was in their building until at least 3:30 p.m. the day of the arrest, and back in the building the next morning at 7:00 a.m.  Considering all that information and Davis' strong denial, his story actually holds water.

And thus Florio could have one of the most difficult decisions in the storied history of the "Days Without an Arrest" meter.

Do you guys think you are helping yourselfs by dragging this out for five posts? Get over it, there is no decision, he wasn't arrested for being a thug.

Just lick your wounds and end this story. Vontae was not arrested. I will look forward to the arrest meter being reset to the correct number.

Correction. Until pre-season starts... at least then there will be games to talk about, instead of pure speculation...

I wonder if a real attorney would have trouble figuring this out?

So everyone that called Vontae a thug and used the original article as support for his "character issue" problems gonna enjoy their crow?

Yes I read this site every day, but this many posts regarding this Davis crap is ridiculous (and I'm a Dolphins fan). Let us know when the issue is resolved.

and you morons not only continue to read the drivel, you take the time to comment on it!

Keep up the good work Rosenthal! Welcome to PFT!

I'm starting to think "one of the most difficult decisions" Florio has ever faced involves whether or not he can part with the 30 dollars he has to pay his son's friend to edit the site's code because he has no freakin' clue how to reset the counter in reverse. What to do? Florio had been saving that 30 bucks for 5 minutes in the local newsroom for that priceless but cheap air of journalistic credibility.

I have to admit that I haven't read PFT much lately. The content has been noticeably deteriorating (or has it always been this bad?). However, now that Mr. Rosenthal is here, I have to say that I am more interested. I always read Gregg's work at Rotoworld. When it comes to the NFL, he knows his stuff.

So for all of Florio's boneheaded articles, lame attempts at humor, arrogance, self-promoting and Patriot loving; I have to say this - hiring Rosenthal was a good move. Congrats Mike, you got something right.

Now what did Gregg mean when he wrote the following?

"And thus Florio could have one of the most difficult decisions in the storied history of the 'Days Without an Arrest' meter."

Clearly, Gregg's question is not whether or not Davis is innocent. The answer to that is obvious. The real question is whether or not Florio will actually be willing to admit a mistake. That would be a first.

Florio, you're a lawyer. Why don't you make the effort to check out the validity of stories before you post them. I know you're not a journalist, just a blogger, but really, you post stories without providing all of the details like you have an agenda or something. Then, people believe you because they don't click on the links. Now that you're going big time, put in the effort to check stories out before you go sullying peoples names and then having your other writers have to explain away your mistakes. And playing your music loud and not having a license doesn't make you a thug. That would be like someone who gets arrested for having sex in public a thug. Don't let your website become a joke.

what about the other case of mistaken identity this offseason, I forget the player but he is on the bills. Not only was the 'Days without an Arrest' counter not reset, the bills are still being awarded the points for an arrest that never occured. I hope the 'fins are not awarded points for this one

  16. The Wendigo says: June 24, 2009 7:36 AM

That would be Corey McIntyre, arrested a month after a near-sighted old lady falsely accused him of 'whacking in her camper'.

    *****

Why is this difficult when he is not under contract with an NFL team? No meter reset. No turd points.

  18. Dekan says: June 24, 2009 9:25 AM

If this is a diffcult call what's an easy one? It wasn't him

  19. eeerockski says: June 24, 2009 9:26 AM

No, not the Days without an arrest meter! Oh the humanity!

  20. Vito says: June 24, 2009 10:56 AM

I just think the stories posted have still been wishy-washy on the matter. It seems like you don't believe that it wasn't him. If he was in Miami at 3:30 and was supposed to be arrested about 3 hours later, it's impossible that it would be him. Considering TSA regulations now on when you need to get to the airport, how long it takes to disembark, and how long the flight would take, even if he did want to fly up there, drive around pumping his music, then fly right back to be back at Dolphins stadium at dawn, it wouldn't be possible.

The only issue is that his wallet was "stolen". Sounds to me like he gave his id to an underage buddy who tried to get out of an alcohol arrest with Vontae's id. If that is true, it would bring into question his decision making.
