More Details On Jennings Contract

On the heels of a local Milwaukee TV report that Greg Jennings’ contract extension has been finalized, more details about the proposed deal are emerging.
ESPN.com’s John Clayton says the Packers and Jennings are nearing a three-year contract extension through 2012 that will include a minimum of $27 million in new money.  It can be worth as much as $30 million if he performs at a “Pro Bowl level.”  Jennings was scheduled to make $535,000 in 2009.
Clayton also reports that some language in the contract has to be worked out before it is sent to the NFL Management Council and signed.  So it’s not exactly a “done deal” just yet.
The original report by FOX 6 Sports said Jennings would become the second highest paid receiver in the league, but that is open for interpretation.  Clayton’s numbers indicate that Jennings will average under $7 million for the next four seasons.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Roy Williams, and Andre Johnson all make more money per season.  Antonio Bryant will make $9.88 million as Tampa’s franchise player in 2009.
Still, the deal looks like a fair one for both sides.  Jennings didn’t break the bank, but he’s likely to make it to the end of the contract, barring major injuries.  He will get to re-enter the free agent market in 2013 at age 29, and possibly strike it rich again.
Heck, Brett Favre may have even retired by then.
UPDATE:  Two local rags have also confirmed the agreement.

Great deal all around! I’m happy for Jennings and his family.
Thanks to Gregg Rosenthal for some real Packer news around these parts. Florio doesn’t care for the team because the roster has no backups from WVU.

I suppose that makes you a virtual rag, florio? Shoot for the stars, my friend

I’m glad that the Packers got him extended in what appears to be a fair deal for both sides. Got it done without crying to the media or threatening a training camp holdout either. Now shut your mouth Nick Collins and get your ass into camp on time. You’re making $3mil this year and you aren’t anywhere close to being one of the best safety’s in the league.

    Hey Rosenthal,
We need a little more background, bro.
You said: “T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Roy Williams, and Andre Johnson all make more money per season.”
My first question after reading that sentence: Ever heard of a guy named Larry Fitzgerald?
You didn’t say “some of the players who make more are…” and you didn’t say “some examples of players who make more…” The way you said it, you kind of imply that those are the only guys who are making more per season, especially the way you threw in Antonio Bryant’s 9 mil at the end of the sentence.
After checking the link and reading the article, I then realized that you were using Clayton’s numbers to refute the linked article which put Jennings ahead of the listed players.
I don’t want to have to click the referenced article in order to make sense of your story.
    It’s just a little sloppy.
    What you SHOULD have said:
“T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Roy Williams, and Andre Johnson all make more money per season, along with the NFL’s top paid recievers, Larry Fitzgerald and Lee Evans.”

Greg Jennings might be the most underrated WR in the league. I am not a Packers fan, but I truly believe he is a top ten WR. It’s good he could get the deal done. For him to not make 7 figures is crazy.

Glad to see Jennings not get all crazy in his demands and continue to show he’s the team player he has been since he stepped foot in Green Bay. He never said a word about his contract, said he would never play the holdout game and isn’t a diva. It’s refreshing to see that from a WR for a change. Even better was that he was drafted with a 2nd round pick that they got for dumping Javon Walker onto the Broncos. In hindsight, that was one of the best draft day trades in recent memory. For all the flack TT gets, he sure did a good job scouting some receiver from Western Michigan of all places.
