Bernard Hopkins Keeps Bashing McNabb

Boxer Bernard Hopkins has had a problem with Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb for a while.
And Hopkins hasn’t been afraid to articulate his views.
Most recently, Hopkins addressed his disdain for McNabb with Howard Eskin of WIP radio in Philly.
Hopkins (via Sheil Kapadia of philly.com) called McNabb a “lapdog” and a “frontrunner.”  Speaking of dogs (I couldn’t resist), Hopkins also said that the Eagles should have dumped McNabb and signed Mike Vick.
Eskin suggested that ongoing criticism flows from the fact that McNabb didn’t kiss Bernard’s butt when Hopkins visited practice.
Hopkins denied it, but when he offered up an explanation it sure sounded like there might be merit to Eskin’s theory.
“When I did go to the NovaCare Center with my team, was he like everybody else?” Hopkins said.  “Like the rest of the players?  Was he giving us respect, giving everybody respect, my trainer, myself and all that, just coming over, sign this, sign that or whatever?  No, he sort of ran into a little room and locked the door and came out every now and then to peak his head out to see if we left yet.  But that just tells you he’s not a social guy.
“When a guy is uncomfortable that the light is not actually on him, then you have some people that can’t take it.  And look, the bottom line is if you want the light to be on you, you gotta do what champions do.  You win, you win, you win, you win and you win the big one.”
But the same thing can be said about many other quarterbacks, including those who have won Super Bowls.  Indeed, it’s their ego that has driven many of them to do whatever they had to do to play football at its highest level.
Bottom line?  Hopkins doesn’t like McNabb.  And Hopkins isn’t afraid to say so.  Repeatedly.

That is what happens when your career involves getting punched in the head.
Even though Hopkins has done a lot more punching than taking punches.
“But the same thing can be said about many other quarterbacks, including those who have won Super Bowls. Indeed, it’s their ego that has driven many of them to do whatever they had to do to play football at its highest level.”
    Agree 100% with this

Eagles fans keep bashing McNabb too. How is this notable?

  3. Stradavarius says: Jun 25, 2009 10:40 AM

The most fascinating thing about this post is that people still listen and grant interviews to Eskin. Mike Miss is making Eskin ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ in the philly sports talk world. Sorry Howard, the world and this town passed you by…

Im not exactly McNabbs biggest fan, but who the hell does Hopkins think he is that he can show up at a practice and expect that everyone should come running over to pay him respect. Maybe McNabb doesnt like boxing, or maybe he just didnt want to be bothered with a guy who has a tremendous ego. Hopkins is a Hall of Fame boxer, but to expect everyone to come kiss his ass when he stops by a practice is a little too much.

  5. bobwsc says: Jun 25, 2009 10:43 AM

why the constant back-and-forth battle of “he didn’t show proper respect” between athletes?

  6. nupicasso says: Jun 25, 2009 10:44 AM

Just another black on black crime.

  7. soflaeagle1 says: Jun 25, 2009 10:44 AM

I’m glad McNabb didn’t kiss his rear end, Hopkins is just another falling star doing what he is accusing Donovan of, which is being not too happy that the spotlight is not on him and that it is on someone else, it is all in his own words
I think hopkins is just another washed up douche bag.

  8. gameday says: Jun 25, 2009 10:45 AM

Sorry Brnard, your “team” came to Mcnabbs TEAM or turf. Why should they be kissing up to you? You are a has been. You should have been kissing McNabbs a$$ for him allowing you and your “team” on his TEAMs field.

Thats absolutely true, McNabb needs other people to praise him and his ego is extremely fragile. I read the “book” that TO wrote and he talks about the same issue. Ive always been a fan of Donovan but to be honest I cant wait for us to move on. He has certainly done a great deal of good for the birds and won many games, but he never comes up with a play in the clutch, never serious enough or even upset when we lose, and also shows up out of shape (many players commented on him running out of gas in the SB and needing an IV). Nothing but respect for the guy but I cant wait to see what we can do with someone who actually gives his 100%.

  15. hayward giablommi says: Jun 25, 2009 10:54 AM

I don’t know squat about Bernard Hopkins, nor do I really care about him…but the guy sounds pretty douchy to me. Shows how much he knows that he’d rather have Vick on his team than McNabb. I’d much rather have my QB, you know, actually practicing at practice rather than hobnobbing with “celebrities” with an overinflated sense of self importance.
Oh, and its hard not to overlook the irony of someone being called a lapdog on Howard Eskin’s show, since Eskin is the ultimate “lapdog” who has an all access pass to the Eagles, thanks to his constantly fellating Joe Banner and the rest of front office.

  16. dlyduke says: Jun 25, 2009 10:55 AM

  18. DixieFan says: Jun 25, 2009 10:58 AM

Why is this even worth reporting? Since when does the opinion of an idiot boxer with a bruised ego matter?

  19. Rhodium Heart says: Jun 25, 2009 10:58 AM

McNabb puts points on the board here and he’s not even playing offense.
Now if he could only do that in the game of football, Philadelphia might get off his case.

  20. stevemcguigan says: Jun 25, 2009 11:01 AM

If Hopkins had bothered to do an ounce of research, he’d know that the reason McNabb ignored him is because McNabb and Felix Trinidad were roomates at Syracuse.

  21. Joe in Raleigh says: Jun 25, 2009 11:01 AM

A grown man is upset because McNabb wouldn’t give him an autograph. Seriously. I thought you had to stop asking for autographs when you turned 16.

  22. Darth Ringo says: Jun 25, 2009 11:03 AM

I have no idea who Bernard Hopkins is but if he thinks people should drop to their knees when he enters the room he’s an egomaniac. I don’t blame McNabb one bit for ignoring him!

  23. BirdsFan.com says: Jun 25, 2009 11:07 AM

Hopkins is used to people kissing his ass and Donovan didn’t so Bernard is throwing a HISSY FIT ! he needs to deflate his EGO a bit
He was a great fighter but He is the one not giving respect for what Donovan Does and has done. for this franchise. keep the headgear on Bernard, those hits are taking thier toll.

  28. tv says: Jun 25, 2009 11:14 AM

What is it with this whole “respect” crap? Just because someone doesn’t bow down to someone else doesn’t mean that they are showing “disrespect”.
If McNabb had walked up to Hopkins and pissed on his shoes, THAT would have been disrespectful!
Further, what has Hopkins ever done to earn (yes EARN) respect in the Eagles lockerroom?

  29. dibs004 says: Jun 25, 2009 11:15 AM

Who gives a sh*t Hopkins! Stop crying about your QB like T.O. and grow a pair. Like Gameday said, that’s McNabb’s turf, and he was at work pete’s sake. Maybe he doesn’t prefer to hang around arrogant SOB’s.

  30. BuckyBadger says: Jun 25, 2009 11:20 AM

I had the pleasure [use this term loosely] to meet Hopkins two days before the Pacman vs Hatton fight and he isn’t some great guy. We was basically really standoffish and everything overheard him say was about race. All the other fighters Mosley, Juan Diaz, Oscar, Marquez, Barrera and others that I meet that weekend were great. Shook my hand and talked boxing. Hopkins wouldn’t basically go out of his way to ignore you.

  31. jackstraw777 says: Jun 25, 2009 11:22 AM

Bernard is an azz and Eskin is a bigger one.

  32. Trey says: Jun 25, 2009 11:28 AM

I find McNabb as a petulant complainer and arrogant. The guy is overrated. He performs like most above average quarterbacks. When everything is going well for his team he performs well, when they aren’t he stinks up the joint. He is 1-4 in NFC Championship games. This is the time when a great quarterback takes his team on his shoulders. McNabb does do this. Look at the best current quarterbacks in playoff games. McNabb is this generations Warren Moon.

  33. dibs004 says: Jun 25, 2009 11:28 AM

Don’t agree PoleVault. McNabb gave 110% in those close postseason games – hell, look what he did last year in the second half comeback against the Cards. The man has carried the entire offensive load (along with a healthy Westbrook) for years. No wonder he’s an athlete who needs an IV when it’s all said and done. The Eagles defense has emploded late in games, and McNabb had to raise his level of play even higher. The guy is still among the top 5 QB’s in the league, and you want to move on?? To what?!

    polevault1543 says:
“Thats absolutely true, McNabb needs other people to praise him and his ego is extremely fragile. I read the “book” that TO wrote and he talks about the same issue”
-How exactly do you “know that is true”? Please do not base this on T.O.’s book. I cannot believe you actually read that book.
“Ive always been a fan of Donovan but to be honest I cant wait for us to move on. ”
    - Is playing on a broken leg and throwing 4 tds enough to “prove” that he gives 100%? How about playing through a sports hernia?
Maybe, just maybe, McNabb was winded and even threw up in the SB because his offensive line let him take too many hits. Maybe he had to throw the ball on almost every down because Westbrook was a no show and the defense was terrible. Remember when McNabb threw a TD for the lead after throwing up? And then the defense lost it again.
You cannot make a statement like: “Nothing but respect for the guy but I cant wait to see what we can do with someone who actually gives his 100%. ”
It is contradictory. Unless, of course, you respect people who do not give 100%. If you really believe he does not give 100% then you should be calling for him to be cut and should have been for a while.
McNabb has given 100% and he has played on a team with no running game and an OK defense. He has always had to be the whole show – not just the main show. Kinda like LeBron. Look at Eli, he won when they got a good WR but more importantly a great defense. McNabb has never had that luxury. Every clutch play and copmeback he makes gets nullified by an overrated defense. It pains me to say that because I love defense but since Andy has been here – there has never been a great defense that controls and wins games on a consistent basis like there has been in: New York, Baltimore, new England, and Pittsburgh.
I am not saying that McNabb is perfect or infalable but I am saying that to put all of the blame on him.

  38. allnstride says: Jun 25, 2009 11:38 AM

Although I love B-Hop in the ring, he’ll never be mistaken for a Rhodes scholar outside of it . Even though he can sometimes be fairly pointed and on the mark, his comments on McNabb are little more than his own grand-standing as many others have mentioned (should be no surprise coming from a boxer). To all those posting about who is Bernard Hopkins?….WOW! He IS well past his prime and hanging on because of the poor level of talent at his weight class but he is one of the best that has done it.

  39. Smush Rodrigez says: Jun 25, 2009 11:39 AM

Howard is correct in this case. Hopkins is an idiot. What gives him the knowledge to talk about football? His sport is not a team game so the whole “athelete in a locker room” argument does not work either.

  40. scotto_65 says: Jun 25, 2009 11:42 AM

Honestly saying this proves I’m a little oblivious towards boxing… but I had to google Bernard Hopkins to even figure out who the hell this guy was. This guy is 44 he’s on the downside of his career and the fact that people aren’t tripping over themselves to come get him to scribble on their stuff is something he obviously can’t handle. It’s ok though, with all the concussions through his career as a boxer I’m sure he’ll have alzheimers in a couple years anyhow and won’t be able to remember his own name let alone who “snubbed” him during an autograph session.
On a side note Howard Eskin’s show SUCKS! I was bored at work one day and tried listening to it and after a solid 2 minutes I couldn’t take it anymore. I swear that Eskin’s show is more of a soap opera type format than sports show.

it’s going to be funny when Philadelphia gets it’s wish to move on from McNabb and realizes how good they’ve had it. Be careful of what you wish for.
Ask Miami about how that works out when you try to replace a franchise QB. It’s been almost a decade, and despite last year’s success, I think they’re still looking, all while spending 2nd round draft picks for 5 straight years trying to find that guy.

  53. Iggles103 says: Jun 25, 2009 12:42 PM

All because McNabb didn’t want to hang out with Bernard and his entourage of thugs then his replacement for him is Vick? I guess Bernie wasn’t at the NFC title game when D Mac lead the birds to the super bowl over Vick without TO.

  56. drbob1 says: Jun 25, 2009 12:57 PM

Hopkins was never half the fighter that McNabb is a QB; he sounds like a punch drunk ididot most of the time; which is probably why DMac didn’t want to associate with him when Hpkins and his people visited the Nova care complex. Notice McNabb doesn’t respond in kind; that’s because he has too much class and because most people don’t even know who Hopkins is, as has been posted on this board several times.

  57. TheDPR says: Jun 25, 2009 1:16 PM

  58. Mangy66 says: Jun 25, 2009 1:23 PM

Why do people keep bashing McNabb?
Regardless of Brian Westbrook and a good offensive line (which admittedly is a huge leg-up), McNabb is that team. Few QBs (definitely ones you can’t land that easily…Mannings, Rivers, Brady, Brees, etc.) would have done better with that team.
Yes, McNabb suffers with bouts with inconsistency, but the dude took his team to a bunch of NFC Championships with James Thrash and Todd Pinkston as his #1 & #2 receivers.
There’s a reason why Bernard Hopkins is a boxer. He chose not to use his brain early on, and after getting knocked in the head for some time, he has no use of his brain whether he’d like to or not. He should stick to boxing.
After McNabb gets run out of Philly (or if Philly fans are lucky, he finishes his career in Philly), those shoes are going to be tough to fill.

  59. Kevin from Philly says: Jun 25, 2009 1:28 PM

For those of you asking who Hopkins is, he was middleweight champion for TEN YEARS and successfully defended his title 20 times. Hardly a nobody – and deserving of more than a little respect. That said, ( and since no one here was at practise that day, it’s impossible to tell which side to take), Hopkins does come off as a bit of a baby.

b-hop is just an uneducated street guy who liked to fight. fortunately for him, he was good at it. He was also undoubtedly tough as nails. Unfortunately, b-hop still thinks in the same street terms he always has. So, if McNabb didn’t give him his props, then b-hop was going to take offense. Two things are for sure, b-hop never read a book in his life, and if he did, it would be at the reading level of “little t learns to share”. b-hop is about as capable of running the eagles as i am of flying the space shuttle.
the best line of the comments however was the observation that anyone going on the “Caddy to anyone famous (Charles, Schmitty, Andy, Joe B.)” show to call someone a “lapdog” is beyond ironic. but the caddy can be counted on to never ask a tough question when those he caddies for are on the show, so an idiot like b-hop could make those stupid comments unchallenged.

mcnabb is a really underappreciated QB. not quite in brady/manning territory, but deffinetely in that next tier of very good QBs. he carried the eagles offense for years, dragging the likes of james thrash and todd (im a pussy) pinkston to the NFC championship game year after year. the eagles have been a contender most of his career. he probably wouldve won a ring in 04 had he not run into the best team from the patriots dynasty. a lot of eagles fans who ride his ass will never realize what they had until he’s gone and the birds endure 10 years of mediocrity trying to find a replacement.
I C: go back to pounding your light beers. dumbass

Note to Florio: If you don’t have anything to post about people who MATTER, please, just don’t post anything at all. I don’t mind.
Who is Hopkins and what is boxing?? LOL! It’s 2009, none of that matters.

He really needs to grow up. He didn’t kiss his ass, so he should be cut? Huh?

    Zod:
I notice that amid dozens of famous choking quarterbacks (Jim Kelly?) you chose the two highest profile and most successful black quarterbacks prior to McNabb to call dogs.
You’re a mouth-breathing hick racist. Try and deny it.

Are you going to say something bad about my mother too? Did you forget Doug Williams, who when he got on the big stage, had a career game? Choking comes in all shapes and colors. If you want to call Jim Kelly a choker that’s fine but he didn’t blow the winning FG nor did he forget his helmet right before a Superbowl game. However McNabb did barf at crunch time in his one trip to the SB. Cunningham started short arming passes in the second half of the NFCC game against Atlanta and turned a W into a L.
