Edge In A Holding Pattern

The notion of Marvin Harrison going to the Vikings got us wondering about another unattached ex-Colt who’s on the back-nine of a very good career. Edgerrin James.
So we called agent Drew Rosenhaus and caught him between tweets (twits?) for an update on Edge.
James, who turns 31 in August, did get an offer from a team earlier this offseason, according to Rosenhaus. The agent wouldn’t reveal which club but declared, “We will be selective. We want to make sure for Edge that he goes to a good situation. He would like an opportunity to have a significant role and a great opportunity for playing time. We may wait until right before camp and see what teams have the greatest need. We may wait until during or after camps when teams are dealing with injuries.”
James is coming off the least productive season of his 10-year career, carrying for just 514 yards on 133 carries. But the Cardinals turned to him at the tail end of their stunning season and James gave himself some bounce as he entered the market, closing the regular season with a 14-carry, 100-yard game against the Seahawks and then going for 236 yards on 61 carries in four playoff games.
Rosenhaus said James won’t limit himself to considering teams only from the perceived NFL elite.
“Winning a Super Bowl is very important to him but there’s no way to know (who will be there at the end),” he pointed out. “Nobody projected the Cardinals in the Super Bowl and the Patriots missing the playoffs last year. We won’t prognosticate which is the best team. We will focus on the opportunity as much as anything else.”
So where might opportunity and interest intersect? Well, in May, Saints GM Mickey Loomis acknowledged interest in James. And while they seem high on Pierre Thomas as their lead back and Reggie Bush as their No. 2, Thomas did suffer a mild injury during minicamp to the wrist he had surgically repaired at the end of last season. And the Eagles will spend much of the offseason waiting for their lead back, Brian Westbrook, to recuperate from recent ankle surgery.
Meanwhile, Rosenhaus signalled that James is in fighting trim. “He’s always worked out on his own anyway so he continues to be in excellent shape. He’s healthy, excited and ready to have a great season.”
All he needs now is, y’know, an employer.
