Marvin To Minnesota?

Whenever we mention the name "Charley Walters" in this space, many Vikings fans stop reading.

For the rest of you, Walters reports under the "Don't Print That" portion of his column in the St. Paul Pioneer Press that there's "buzz" that the Vikings "might" sign receiver Marvin Harrison to a "one-year, low-end deal" to provide competition for Sidney Rice.

Of course, this assumes that Harrison would accept a low-end deal.  Chances are that he won't, given that he declined a reduced offer to remain with the Colts.

Then again, if Harrison has no other options and he wants to continue playing football, the Vikings might be his best option.

Especially when Harrison would be catching passes from Brett Favre.

BarnyardBerrianSucks must be excited beyond belief at this one ---- one more opportunity to say the Vikings need a number one receiver...

  2. jimicos says: June 25, 2009 10:02 AM

Do the Vikings play the Colts this year?

  3. notkrisroe says: June 25, 2009 10:02 AM

Makes sense. He played in a dome in Indy, and he would play in a dome in Minnesota. If/when Favre signs with the Vikes, Harrison would probably be more inclined to land there too.

No, Mike, we continue reading for the good laugh. (Most of us don't read the St Paul Pioneer Press unless we're trying to save 25 cents every day.)

Walters is a tool. It appears we're already going to have one aloof former star on the team who requires his own locker room - we don't need another.

Bring it.....if he wants to sign, let him sign. Rice needs a little push and Marvin could be the old "jake reed" role.

Vikings fans are sweating bullets over this development.

  7. Ghost MkII says: June 25, 2009 10:16 AM

As a Bears fan, I would love to see this.

But I'm not sure it makes any sense? Why would he want to catch passes from Favre when he was catching them from Manning? At least in 2009, Manning is by far the better QB.

Is Harrison that bent on starting one more time that he wants to go play in purple? Enjoy!

I can already see the viking super-fans drawing up "Marvin to Harvin" hook and ladder plays...

  9. Sundance says: June 25, 2009 10:36 AM

He'd be a good addition just from a "coaching" standpoint
if the contract is low enough. Rice was injured all last year
and was never at 100%. He won't need anyone to push
him. The Vikings have and excellent young squad of WR's
    that Harrison could tutor.

  10. bgman says: June 25, 2009 10:36 AM

I see Harrison as a repeat of Jerry Rice in a Seahawks or Broncos uniform. While not a great WR corps with a true No. 1 WR (unless Sideny Rice improves from his rookie year after a lost sophomore season), the Vikings don't have an open spot for Harrison.

They already have a deep threat (bernard Berrian), a tall red zone WR (Sidney Rice), a versitle all-purpose WR (Percy Harvin), and a 3rd down specialist slot WR (Bobby Wade).

The 5th WR will be a young player who will primarily be a special teams specialist. So there really isn't a spot for Harrison, unless the Vikigs carry 6 WRs or consider Percy Havin to be the 3rd RB. I can't see an aging Harrison being more than a 40 catch/600 yard 4th WR at best, so unless he accepts a minimal incentive-laden salary he won't play for Minnesota.

    @jimicos

No, the Colts don't play the Vikings this year.

  12. MeanLeroyBrown says: June 25, 2009 10:51 AM

The play the colts during the preseason.

  13. TCLARK says: June 25, 2009 10:58 AM

Marvin doesn't tutor anyone. Just ask fans in Indy. Marvin keeps to himself. (With a vingence.)

  14. MNFANINAZ says: June 25, 2009 11:01 AM

Why does everyone want to be a Viking?! Sheesh, this popularity is exhausting.

Oh that's right, because we have the greatest fan base in the history of the NFL (Because A.) im included in that and B.) see the Arizona game. ) and also because we have the two most electric players this league has ever seen... Adrian Peterson and the soon to be unveiled Percy Harvin... WHATCHA GONNA DOOOOOOO, WHATCHA GONNA DO, WHEN THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS DOMINATE YOUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!

Undefeated @ Lambeau in the playoffs, out.

  15. mixman34 says: June 25, 2009 11:07 AM

Sure why not. Its not like he'd hurt the team, and would be good mentor (at least on the field) for Harvin. If the price is low enough I say they do it. However robo-knees don't deserve much more than veteran minimum.

Florio writes "Walters reports...that there’s “buzz” that the Vikings “might” sign receiver Marvin Harrison to a “one-year, low-end deal” to provide competition for Sidney Rice."

Wow, Walters makes good use of unnamed sources/rumors as you do Florio. You should sign him up as a writer because of all the good tips he would provide.

  17. BarnyardBerrianSucks says: June 25, 2009 11:35 AM

I'm surprised the Vikings haven't contacted Jerry Rice. They seem to be desperate in signing every washed up player that nobody else has any interest in. Perhaps they should learn how to draft?

  18. empty13 says: June 25, 2009 11:48 AM

    Marvin won't mentor anyone.

Old, slow, falls down after catch or any contact.

    Some receiving threat...

  19. CapsLockKey says: June 25, 2009 12:51 PM

Whatever happened to building championship teams instead of buying them? Did Dan Snyder buy the Vikings too? Peterson and the Starcap boys feel like the only actual "Vikings" on the team. They steal Hutch from the Seahawks a couple years ago. Give up their draft last year to take Jared Allen from the Chiefs while going ape in FA throwing money at guys like Berrian. Now they want to bring in Favre AND Harrison? They should have never broken up the Culpepper/Moss combo.

  20. NoHomeTeam says: June 25, 2009 2:05 PM

First the whole Favre debacle, and now Harrison?
I hope this latest rumor is just that.

I once had a great deal of respect for both men, but that didn't mean I wanted them on the Vikings. This whole saga stinks of panic and desperation on the part of the front office.

I think I'll just leave my purple gear in the drawer this year and hope it all blows over soon.

Brent favre and marvin harrelson are gunna win the sooper bowl!

  22. Johnny2k says: June 25, 2009 3:23 PM

They might - just might - be on their way to building the best shuffleboard team in NFL history.

  23. outofbounds says: June 25, 2009 6:26 PM

so that says alot about the guys in charge of talent evaluation in Minnesota....two old guys out of their prime who looked VERY old last year .....why would you even want them

  24. vikingcole says: June 25, 2009 8:16 PM

Why would the Vikes want Harrison again? Didn't he shoot someone? Besides Percy Harvin is a Viking. Need I say more?

  25. Raging Clue says: June 25, 2009 8:22 PM

"Then again, if Harrison has no other options and he wants to continue playing football, the Vikings might be his best option."

Yep, if you don't have any other options, that one option remaining might just be your best option. Excellent use of the English language.

  26. CanadianVikingFan says: June 25, 2009 11:52 PM

    Who said what?

  27. cramjones says: June 25, 2009 11:52 PM

Where's the backfire from bringing Starvin' Marvin to the Love Boat? Outside of him being involved in the Alamo, he can actually bring something to a receiving crew that could incorporate his knowledge. He's a HOF'er, whether you like it or not.

  28. steve2e says: June 26, 2009 7:41 AM

The first preseason game hasn't been played yet and it has gotten real personal. God I love this.
