The Saints may lead the league in name recognition on their
quarterback depth chart with Drew Brees, Mark Brunell, and Joey
Harrington in the fold.
They are, however, still lacking a clear backup to Brees.
Saints coach Sean Payton indicated recently that Brunell, the incumbent, will have to battle with Harrington to keep his job.
“I feel good because we have experience there,” Payton said.
Saints fans may not share Payton’s enthusiasm. Brunell turns 39 in
September, and didn’t look good in his final appearances with the
Redskins. Harrington has been released by four different teams,
including the Saints, who did it twice last season.
It’s no wonder that the New Orleans Times-Picayune says Brees “arguably wields more clout that any player in today’s NFL.”
Brees is the face and arm of the Saints franchise. If the winner of
this backup competition is ever forced to start, the Saints season
would likely go down faster than a Hand Grenade at Tropical Isle.
