Is Money A Factor In Favre's Return?

nfl_favre1.jpgDay one of PFT on NBC, and it’s already time for the second story about Number Four.  (See, nothing has changed!)

Don Banks of SI.com writes Wednesday that we shouldn’t overlook the motivating factor that money plays in Brett Favre’s inevitable return to the NFL.

Banks’ prominent Wisconsin-based source says Favre appreciates his cheddar

“Brett likes his money now.  Don’t underestimate how hard it would be for
him to ever leave $8 million to $10 million — or whatever the Vikings
wind up offering him — on the table.  He talks about staying home and
riding his lawn mower around, but he likes to get paid.”

Favre could have received more money from the Packers to stay retired last year, but that wouldn’t satisfy his previously admitted desire to get back at the franchise that traded him.

The Vikings, of course, have their own financial motivation to sign Favre at a time when prospects for public funding of a new stadium look bleak.

In the end, it’s hard to fault Favre or the Vikings for allowing finances to be a motivating factor for a union.  It would be strange if money weren’t a big part of the equation.

  3. JimmySmith says: Jul 1, 2009 1:23 PM

At 20 INT’s a season, that’s a half million per. Hell, T Jack Off could do that at a third of the price.

We all know it’s not about money; it’s about REVENGE!!!

  5. tarken10 says: Jul 1, 2009 1:28 PM

I just can’t believe that money would be a determining factor between an NFL organization and a star NFL player’s decision to come there. WOW!
Has anyone called this in to Ripley?

  6. Peoria Viking says: Jul 1, 2009 1:33 PM

When Favre finally signs, I’m counting on PFT to be the first to break the news.

  7. NDCowboysfan says: Jul 1, 2009 1:33 PM

They need to get this done already so favre can get the playbook down and start getting acclimated with his team..

  8. HardcoreVikesFan says: Jul 1, 2009 1:36 PM

Well, he is gonna need all that money for the big wedding day coming up. I heard Madden is bitching because Brett hasn’t spent enough money on the occasion.

Yeah, this can’t possibly go wrong.

Playing football for money and revenge and NOT for a championship. Remember that Vikings fans when and if you make the playoffs.

Living in Minneapolis, it’s going to be great to see the circus come to town and this big ill conceived gamble blow up in the face of the supposed brain trust operating at Winter Park.
Basically, the Vikings need to sweep the Packers and win the Super Bowl in order for it to be considered a success. I’m not sure which is more highly unlikely. All I know is that both of them won’t happen and most likely they’ll be lucky to split the series, as evidenced by Childo’s 1-5 record. Heck, if it wasn’t for the missed field goal last year, he would be 0-6 with an even more embarassing 34-0 pounding the year before.

  19. Hungry N. Hadasnack says: Jul 1, 2009 2:32 PM

    Ego/Attention
    Revenge
    and now Greed!!
A perfect trifecta of pure motivations!
(It’s a pretty far cry from that “kid on the sandlot who just loves to play the game…” bullsh1t, ain’t it?)

  20. PackFaninPackLand says: Jul 1, 2009 2:38 PM

Yep, that damn Favre – he’s the ONLY player in the NFL in it for the money.
Hell, I’m guessing Brady or Manning would play for the league minimum if only asked, right ???
Why I’ll bet Florio hooked up with NBC, and Sprint, etc. with absolutely NO cash trading hands too ! He just did it of his free will, right Gregg ???

  21. SpartaChris says: Jul 1, 2009 2:38 PM

I know some are going to play the greed card, but you have to be honest and ask yourselves- If someone were willing to pay you that kind of money for one year’s worth of service, wouldn’t you too be inclined to take it?
If you say no, you’re lying.

  22. TD'S R 6 PTS says: Jul 1, 2009 2:45 PM

With Favre’s history, The Vikes should have an incentive clause that cuts $100,000 per INT that Favre throws.
He really needs to be held accountable for his gunslinger style.

  23. diehardbearsfan says: Jul 1, 2009 2:47 PM

This is great news for a Bears fan. In his last two years with Green Bay against Chicago, he threw more touchdowns to Bears Linebackers than he did to his own receivers.
This is gonna backfire in Minnesotas face big time. They’re going to fork out all this cash to an over the hill QB, and because of that other positions will suffer where that money could have gone towards.

  24. DePack says: Jul 1, 2009 2:51 PM

Something tells me that Rosenthal is taking some of Florio’s idiot pills.
“Favre could have received more money from the Packers to stay retired last year, but that wouldn’t satisfy his previously admitted desire to get back at the franchise that traded him.”
The Packers hadn’t traded Favre yet when they offered him the money hence there was no “previously admitted desire to get back at the franchise”.
I don’t mind you idiots trying to inject your “clever” commentary into the articles…..just try to make sense for Christ’s sake.
No coincidence that Favre has appeared twice already on this first day even though neither of the stories really said anything. #4 sells…..the rest of the NFL is just so bland.

  25. chris says: Jul 1, 2009 2:54 PM

And in the end he will be the reason Minnesota will miss the playoffs.

  26. Mark says: Jul 1, 2009 3:15 PM

  27. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Jul 1, 2009 3:20 PM

Is money a factor? Of course it is. Especially for the guy behind the scenes driving this Bus (literally).

  28. Agamemnon says: Jul 1, 2009 3:40 PM

How does an incentive laden contract factor in to the money talk? Does it at all? Would Favre balk at having to work extra hard to get that ten million? (Like a Superbowl?)
Though, with AP, Favre likely wouldn’t have to work that hard. Might be easy money for him either way…

  29. WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot says: Jul 1, 2009 3:45 PM

The guy is a petty bitch
    Hence Comeback Part 2

  30. Fan of Football says: Jul 1, 2009 3:52 PM

The key word there is “Wisconsin-based source”
That wouldn’t happen to be Ted Thompson, would it? You know, the same guy who leaked the misinformation on the supposed Packer issued cell phone.
People keep wanting to vilify Favre when there is nothing there. This “all about the money” thing is hilarious considering he turned down a $20 million dollar bribe not to play last year. Obviously, it ain’t all about the money.

  31. Sterling says: Jul 1, 2009 4:15 PM

Don Banks gets paid, right? So he likes money, too.
Is this even a story? What player in the NFL DOESN’T play for money???

  32. Tiki's Barber says: Jul 1, 2009 4:27 PM

Don’t think for one moment that Favre will take an incentive laden contract. He will tell the Vikings to take a flying leap if they try to pull that with him. He has all the leverage by telling them that he pays his full $12 million salary by just showing up.
All he has to do is point to the fact that the fan base is so pathetic that they couldn’t even sell out half of their home games last season WITH the NFL leading rusher and a supposed vaunted defense and the first home playoff game in 10 years…..
The Vikings are Favre’s b*tch and he knows it!

  35. descendency says: Jul 1, 2009 4:37 PM

    Pride > Money.
Especially when you have a few million laying around.

  36. jbwbubba says: Jul 1, 2009 4:38 PM

All the Favre bashing aside, think about it for a second. Getting paid millions to do something you love. Hard enough to walk away, regardless of Money, but throw in millions more and who can blame Favre for coming back.

Wait a sec, Favre doesn’t need to do either of those things. He just makes plays on the fly and he has to have his own locker room so he doesn’t need to get acclimated with teammates, they need to get use to him. ;)

Shouldn’t you follow your own advice, yes the 20 mil was offered before they traded him but after the Packers had told him he just couldn’t come back and be handed the starting job. That and other events (like not signing Moss, getting Mooch to coach, and drafting Rodgers) that also happened before the 20 mil offer is fueling the revenge angle.
Do your research or look in the mirror when you call people idiots.

    We’ll get him anyways.

  42. Sparrowhawk says: Jul 1, 2009 6:15 PM

The revenge factor is what got Brett to the Viking’s bargaining table in the first place. His willingness to snap at the hand that fed him for 16 years is a reflection of his worth as a human being. The Vikings will have to pay him whatever he demands because their need to fill seats and garner public funding for a new stadium (and thus not become the LA Vikings) places the Vikings in an even more needy situation than Brett Favre.

  43. empty13 says: Jul 1, 2009 7:18 PM

with his own dressing room, no one will know for sure (again) whether his arm is shot, or if he is just faking it is when the whole charade goes south.

  44. BrettUCanDoIt says: Jul 1, 2009 9:49 PM

    Humm, let’s see.
2007 13-3 reg season. 1-1 playoffs. 1 play away from the Super Bowl.
2008 8-3 before he hurts his arm. Takes a 4-12 team to 9-7.
21-6 his last 2 seasons before the injury.
Any other QB with a better record the last 2 years pre-injury?
Favre makes the Vikings instant contenders. If he gets any kind of decent play calling, his INT’s will drop 50%. When you have to force the ball to make plays, INT’s happen. With all the weapons the Vikes have, the pressure will be off Brett.
The short passing game will bring the safeties and corners up and then Brett can toast them with the long ball. If the O-Line is as good as everyone says, no need for Brett to scramble. Quick slants, dump offs to AP and Harvin, and the occasional long ball are all the Vikes need to go 11-5.

  45. Devils Advocate says: Jul 1, 2009 9:53 PM

Yes make a judgement call on half of a season, I am sure may teams would love that. No matter how you spin it, they choked down the finish and Favre was a part of that.

Look at how Favre did under Bevel…not so good. But keep hoping.

  48. gwinn1952 says: Jul 2, 2009 7:41 AM

If he is only in it for the money then tell me why over the years he has restructured his contract and given up some money to keep players on the team. After making millions each year you can only spend so much…then again he does give to his foundation to help the kids and communities. If he was in it for the money he would have taken the 20 million the packers offerred him last year to stay retired.

  49. DePack says: Jul 2, 2009 8:38 AM
