Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback Vontae Davis has already received a crash course in the type of crisis that can develop when someone steals your identity.
Someone allegedly used the first-round draft pick’s stolen driver’s license during a traffic stop in Illinois, which spawned initial reports that made it seem like Davis had been arrested when he was actually in South Florida at the time.
That misunderstanding was cleared up quickly but, as noted in One-Liners, it was still an eye-opening experience for Davis.
So, the need for extra precautions was thoroughly reinforced to Davis and other NFL rookies this week at the league’s annual Rookie Symposium in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
“We talk about this stuff every week in our player development meetings,” Davis said, per Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. ”To actually see it happen to you, you’re like, ‘Wow.’ It wakes you up, like this stuff is serious. It’s really serious.”
At this point, the investigation is ongoing with no new developments since last week when the police department in Champaign, Ill., released a statement that the case was on hold while it conducted an internal review.
The Dolphins’ security director, Stu Weinstein, is also looking into the matter.
“That’s a situation they’re working on,” Davis said. “The police are investigating, and Stu is trying to figure [it] out. It’s a good situation because it’s an invalid license, so they figure it wouldn’t work anywhere else but the situation that happened. . . .
“Being in the National Football League, there’s a target on everybody’s back. Everywhere you go you just have to know people are watching.”
Davis isn’t the only recent cautionary tale on the Dolphins’ roster.
Wide receiver Davone Bess was recently the victim of an impostor on Twitter calling himself “Lambo_Weezy,” who challenged Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson to a race.
Bess’ agent has contacted NFL Security, and Bess is contemplating legal action.
He acts like hes some high profile NFL player, when he hasnt stepped on the field yet lol
I highly doubt the guy who stole his wallet knew who he was, let alone steeling it cuz he had a “target on his back.”
He actually meant to say “Wambo_Leezy” – although, Weezy reminds me of Good Times…or was it The Jeffersons?
Wow, either it’s a slow day or NBC is pushing redundancy. You already covered this basically word for word in the one-liners.
As far as Bess is concerned, I know it’s annoying that someone tried to be him on Twitter, but it’s Twitter, not the social security office. What harm did it really do?
I’d like to see Chris Johnson and Chad Johnson get into a trash talk fight. The results would be epic.
I think I’m going to hate Chris Johnson for a long long time. Maybe even as much as I hate Favre and T.O. … This is exciting.
