Pace Suspension Puts More Pressure On Gholston

NFL_gholston.jpgMaybe Vernon Gholston will get on the field after all early this season.

Calvin Pace’s suspension should open up playing time for last year’s first-round pick, no matter how discouraging his summer has been.

The Jets aren’t deep at outside linebacker, so Gholston will seemingly have to be a factor.

The only real option to keep Gholston off the field would be to move versatile import Bart Scott to the outside.

In that scenario, the Jets could play undrafted rookie Jamaal Westerman on the inside with David Harris. Westerman has been tearing up OTA practices, and the Jets faithful would love to cheer on an underdog Rutgers product.

They also won’t be shy letting Gholston know what they think if he doesn’t take advantage of this opportunity.

    Should be fun to watch
    Brady humiliate Jets
    It never gets old

Not to worry. If his transition from college to the pros is any indication, Gholston thrives on pressure.
As far as Pace is concerned I blame the Patriots.
I have no idea exactly HOW they’re responsible, but if there’s any cheating in the NFL it all has to originate from them. (Or at least that’s what I glean from reading most comments on PFT.)

    Texans 35, Jets 14

HUH??? That must be NY Jet logic on display! His transition thus far is an unmitigated disaster! How does that prove he thrives under pressure?

Ok, I can maybe buy into this statement – Patsies are a bunch of cheaters! But, in the end it’s just:
    J-E-T-S
    SUCK!
    SUCK!
    SUCK!

This is exactly what the Jets needed. For anyone who follows football, I think it’s safe to say that when you only get one tackle on the season from the 6th overall pick, he’s probably a bust waiting to happen. If he doesn’t rise to this occasion, then the Jets will have enough proof to justify cutting him loose. For now they’re forced to save face by sticking with him.

At what point is Goodell going to take a first-round pick from the Jets and Senator Arlen “traitor” Sphincter going to demand to take a closer look at the Jets? This with the steroids, and the fact that it’s been well documented the Jets filmed the Patriots defensive signals with the camera man under the lighthouse.
The reality is taking a first round pick from the Jets would only help them because it would prevent that joke Tannenbaum from wasting a pick and top 10 cash on another waste of space like the Jets currently have in Gholston and Sanchez.
That and the fact that nobody cares about the Jets because they’re consistently one of the NFL’s worst teams and haven’t been relevant since Super Bowl III.

    Agreed the Jest suck
But Fins won’t be much better
    Pats on top again

Just saw Pace’s statement on ESPN – classy that he takes full responsibility. Not sure if his story about a dietary supplement is true, but at least he doesn’t equivocate about the fact he messed up.

The only thing the Patsies will be on top is their sisters – or brothers (not that there is anything wrong with that, especially if you live in Mass or WV). Middle of the pack for them this year – 8-9 wins max (with 2 against the Jests).

If the Pats were involved, it would have been HGH, right?
    I kid Rodney, I kid.
Gholston MUST step it up. The coaches are doing enough to boost his moral this summer, he’s got to show what he can do with the pads on. The Jets will be running a very hybrid defense anyways so it doesn’t really matter who will be lining up where.
With that being said, this is a perfect example of why you don’t trade all of your draft picks for one or two guys. One injury or suspension with no real depth and you’re screwed. Undrafted LB Westermann is tearing up OTA’s which is nice, but shouldn’t make any Jets fan feel comfortable with the situation.

  13. TFBuckFutter says: Jul 2, 2009 5:36 PM

Wow, if your a first round pick and lose your job to an undrafted rookie free agent, you should probably be retire.
That’s like a comedian losing his spot in a showcase to some wildly unfunny moron like FinHead.

  14. JoeSixPack says: Jul 2, 2009 7:01 PM

Finhead – I was being facetious with the “gholston thrives on pressure” and “Patriots must be responsible” lines.
I felt it was pretty clear satire but I’ll make it clearer next time.
and to Heywould Jablome – you do realize that 99.9% of the regular readers and commenters on this website are MEN don’t you?
If you’re dangling that offer out there don’t be shocked with the type of response you might eventually receive.

TFBuckFutter and Heywood Jablowme – please troll elsewhere. Whatever fantasies you may have about finding true love with a PFT member – chances are it’s just not going to happen

Joe, I’m not a troll. I’m also not the one that keeps making lame gay jokes.

it’s funny how Calvin Pace explains himself on the initial release of the suspension. He gets the chance to let everyone know that it wasn’t steroids, it was an over the counter drug.
I wonder why Shawne Merriman wasn’t afforded that luxury.
It’s funny how the initial report that Merriman tested positive for STEROIDS was proven false and no one wants to hear explanations from some but they want to hear explanations from others.
Calvin Pace’s suspension will fall in obscurity, as did Rodney Harrison’s, as did Julius Peppers but since some people don’t like Shawne Merriman the suspension will live on forever because of his performance on the field.
It’s like some people are grasping for a reason why he’s such a great pass rusher. It MUST be the steroids, right?

The whole “Gholston is a bust/ Westerman is tearing it up” thread is a joke. The source for the Gholston analysis is a two-line tweet from Schefter, which doesn’t seem to agree with anything written by anyone else covering the Jets OTA’s. The source for Westerman’s adulation is a quote from Rex Ryan, who has also praised Gholston. And since there’s no contact allowed in OTA/mini-camp, there’s no accurate way to judge the performance of DL’s and LB’s anyway.
